of his paper he would be happier and much more beloved44 Especially would this be true if tsome of his politics did not reek so of old party strife that hap pened before the war and smells better for not being exhumed Even if viewed only from the lstandpoint of a partisan it were better not to shake the bones of an oldfamily skeleton in the face of the public at any time And the rattling of the skeleton in the last issue of the Messenger evinces ex tremely bad taste on the part of p the editor It is a time for par r triotism not politics or the raking up of old party strife 4 The Messenger has made a scur rilous and vindictive attack on Gov Bradley The pretext as 3 sumed is the troubles of Company D The attack is unwarrantable It and is not justified by the facts It is not our province and we T decline to enter into a discussion of the distressing incident We published the statements of the various parties to the affair last week and the facts are known The charitable view to take of the whole matter is as expscssed in the patriotic letter of Mr John i C Latham to a committee of gentleman I representing the Com pany Thinking over the whole matter I am persuaded that you have been made victims of a most unfortunate combination of circumstances II It is very easy to criticise and there have been several hundred thousand private war strategy 3y boards who have sat in judgment on the government the war and navy departments and Governors iiofvarious states But these criti cisms have done little harm to any body save the critics themselves y There is every reason to believe that Governor Bradleyin common r with Govrenors of other states I the army and navy officials and the administration upon all of whom has devolved the arduous and urgent duty to enlist mobilize muster into the service and equip an immense army of willing and patriotic volunteers have done all that their duty demanded and that their preeminent ability made possible to do in order to equip and put in the field with the I least possible delay an efficient army to meet the foreign foe Personal discord nor politics nor party strife should be given J any place to discredit the earnest What is the country coming to HON GEO W JOLLY of Owens boro has requested Senator Land sey to introduce a bill in Congress changing the names of the Phil lipines to the Dewey Islands Such a change of name would strike a popular chord and would constitute a fitting recognition of the gallant Admirals victory TilE Nashville American perpetrated a grim joke the other day by putting the following item at the head of a half column of Army and Navy Gossip Artificial limbs have been constructed in Germany In such a way that those who aro obliged to use them can ride bicycles THERE have been 105000000 in gold imported into the United States in eleven months past Not Our Friends CourierJournalThe war ought to dissi pate forever the sentimental illu sion which has so long existed re garding Frances friendship for us France was for us in the Revolu tion because England was against us and one of the reasons France is against us now is because Eng land is for us The Revolution had hardly closed before we had to go to war with France and the only class in France today who are not openly and offensively against us arc the tradesmen who arc politic enough to wish to keep our custom which is the mainstay of many of them We can get along without French goods and we shall be the better for it if we get along without the depravity of French literature and art ltIYEYIt Suggestion That the Name of sufficient or ders for goods for army purposes from the government to keep them running full time in some in stances day and night says the Textile World This demand will affect both our cotton and woolen mills There arc very few of the latter that arc now manufacturing allwool flannels such as were made thirty years ago This fact has an interesting connection here due to the demand for army purposes for goods of this charac ter which have been superseded for ordinary wear by knitted fabrics The result of the demand for flannels more particularly 6x4 blouse linings will induce a num ber of our mills to change their machinery over to this class of fabrics They will all have to be made and this will take time as the market is practically bare of them It will have the advantage however of removing much of the pressure in other directions which is a matter greatly to be desired The government stands in great need for cotton material for tenting purposes and the strictures arc very rigid for a firstclass fabl ric the standard of the govern ment being that the goods shalI stand a fire hose being played upon them for three quarters of an hour before the water showst through This is regarded an essential feature in tenting sup plies for use in Cuba during theI rainy season Cotton ducks and drills will be in great demand and advertisements arc already in the papers for proposals for such goods lor government use The goods in want are cightouncetcn ounce and twelveounce duck The new tan color fastdyed goods arc especially wanted the deliveries to commence on or after July i next Blue kersey cloth for overcoats and trousers for the soldiers and marines will be wanted and rush orders have al ready been placed with some mills for them These demands on the part of the government may have such an influence upon manufac tures that our textile mills may find themselves well supplied with orders before they know it Ax Jottings- We are haying a plenty of rain The Sunday
