country at large as tar as can be determined at this early season An excep tion is noted in California and it is said that the crop has exper ienced almost every possible un favorable vicissitude of weather THE Hawaiian government has decided not to proclaim neutrality That government is Uncle Sams friend and is in position to render us a service of possibly great value giving us a friendly port on the road to the Phillipines Hawaii wants to be annexed and there is no time the annexation of these islands would do us more good than now NOTWITHSTANDING the war the trade conditions of the United States are most favorable and everything points to a continuance of such conditions The enor mous increase in our exports con tinues as for months past and im ports from foreign markets remain at a minimum The country is in a happy condition with a very large balance of trade in its favort plenty of money in the treasury and no stringency in the money market Exports and Imports Figures published by the Bureau of Statistics of the Treasury Department make a remarkable showing as to our exports and im ports for the ten months ending with April The value of our exports of merchandise domestic and foreign for the ten months reaches the immense total of 1025426681 more than 125 000000 larger than at the same time in the preceding fiscal yeart which it might be added was the heaviest export year in our history Imports on the other hand aggre gate only 511000000 a decrease of 89000000 from the preceding year and the excess of exports over imports amounts to 514245 495 or a sum total greater than the entire aggregate of our imports during that period Prepare for Peace Commenting on the recent Com mercial Convention of Kentucky and the Industrial Convention of Tennessee the Manufacturers Re cord touches the chord that was sounded in patriotic measures by Hon Jno W Yerkes in his brief speech accepting the chairmanship of the Kentucky convention our great opportunity and manifest good reason to reverse the old adage and in time of war prepare for peace The Rtcord says The programme for both organizations outlined in Ibe speeches and resolutions of the respective conventions is large enough and broad enough to engage the activities of enterprising men for many months These activities should not be relaxed because of foreign war On the contrary Ibat war Is a reason why they should Ie maintained vigorously so as to place the States In a position lo avail themselves of Ibe opportunities which will come to tbe South with the cessation of hostilities The admonition is full of unadorned but beautiful to American eyes and wonderful to our neighbors across the sea who have not till now understood Amer cas strength and greatness While foreign nations unencum bered with war are threatened with bread riots and some contemplate the building of national gramcries to hold a reserve food supply this country now at war with some 200000 men actively engaged in army and navy is experiencing most prosperous conditions and is looking for still further industrial progress when the war shall have endedShake out the bonnie blue flag over the oppressed and prepare for peace War Songs We publish today the words and music of Hail Columbia Most of TilE BEES readers can learn something by studying it All Americans should know all of our national songs but very few know any of them a large percentage not even being able to at once the airs when rendered by band or orchestra The latter statement seems rather hard on the average American but in the South at least it is true This must be true for the southern people cannot be accused- of any lack of patriotic feeling and yet in a large crowd of highly in telligent Kentuckians or Tennes secans special effort is required to start any volume of applause in response to the thrilling strains of any of our great national hymns Dixie Old Kentucky Home Vay Down Upon the Sewanee River stir the pride and love of home and native State and always command instant and feeling response It is not that we love the Southland less but that we love the united country more that we complain of the lack of knowledge of and love for our national hymnsWe have for proof of this that at the Tennessee Centennial last year on opening day it required the dili gent work of three men to start any applause at all for America Star Spangled Banner Hail Columbia Red White and Blue Before the Exposition closed there was a considerable evidence of education in this matter but the applause even then came spasmodically And in Louisville at the great May Musical Festival when America was in troduced under most inspiring circumstances and rendered grandly the applause lagged much and was almost forced from the audience by a few persistent enthusiasts We havent learned our national airs Let us do so They should be tanght persistently in every school in the land We should learn both the music and the words Our patriotism should be vocal Foreign Demand for American Goods liThe demand for American goods in other countries shows no signs of abatement says the Age of Steel In fact is rapidly in creasing and apparently without any particular preference as to this or that line or class of goods It may be a door lock or an electric motor a locomotive or a pocket knife a tea caddy or a crosscut saw a mechanical toy or a lucy cle mining machinery or a lawn sprinklerpopularity is assured when once the article is seen or tested There are but few mer cantile establishments or manufacturing plants in Great Britain in which Americanmade goods are not to be found and it is declared by both merchants and manufac timers in a candid and honest man ner that in many points of excellence the imported article has the preference of the people There is evidently a wide and growing market for American goods in the tight little island and it needs but push and energy to secure a permanent and profitable trade The same may be said of conti nental Europe where in spite of restriction and traditional exclu siveness American goods are cap turing public appreciation In Englishspeaking colonies Canada Australasia Africa and the West India islands the same trend of popularity is distinctly perceptible In China Japan Russia and Brit ish India the same can be said In some countries legislation has been invoiced to curtail if it can not eliminate the growing demand for American goods and products In some lines these obstructive tactics are more or less successful and it is not impossible that in such competing countries as Germany a more determined opposition may yet develop itself The fact how ever remains that Americanmade goods are gaining prestige and it is neither bombast nor prophecy to anticipate the time when our pres ent export trade will be the largest and most widely distributed of any contemporary nation We have the secret in our laboringsaving machinery that in spite of the the higher wages paid to labor we can produce at lower cost and with more intelligence and energy generally diffused in all mechanical pursuits we can easily keep at the head of the purpose of adjusting the scale in the Fourth and Seventh districts but adjourned late tonight without coming to ft agreement The operators in these claim they can not mine coal and Itat a profit on the scale de prlcoforand 3Cc in the Seventh district The operators agreed to pay 350 and 320 per ton priceTheing scale in the districts was also discussed but no agreement was reached The amount of coal required by the goy ernment for use in the navy and for other purposes has stimulated the activity in mining districts of Maryland and West Virginia as well as other portions of the South Large quantities of coal have been delivered to war vessels and colliers- at Newport News from the mines along the Chesapeake Ohio to fill government orders A large tonnage is also being shipped to Locust Point Baltimore byway of the Baltimore Ohio Railroad territoryTheonce destined for various Southern coal- Ing stations The Interstate Coal Co of Baltimore has recently filled an order of 10000 tons for the government but this represents only a small portion tot the business If the United States captures any or all of the Spanish possessions in the West Indies a very large quantity of fuel it Is believed will be required for the coaling stations of San Juan on the island of Porlo Rico and other points on the Cu ban coast The question of coal for the Islands is also being discussed by shippers and it is believed that if this territory is held by the American Govern ment It will form another market for Southern coal ManufacturersRecord Not only has Spain the danger of a fuel famine at sea but also slight chances of reaching her own bases of supplies This is shown by the number and location of the coaling stations in the West Indies The four most important are at Havana Kingston Jamaica San Juan Porlo Rico and SI Thomas in the Danish West In dies The nearest port to Europe where a vessel can ordinarily obtain coal is at Santa Lucia which is nearly 1200 miles east of Havana Besides these places are Matanzas and Cardenas on the northern coast of Cuba both within 100 miles of Havana Cienfuegos and St Jago on the southern coast Only small vessels could enter Cardenas and St Jago while as is well known all of the Cuban coast is so closely watched that an enemys warihip SpainhasJuan and Ponce on the Island of Porlo Rico the latter being too small to be of strategic importance As Porlo Rico is nearly Gao miles nearer Europe than hay ana it would bo the natural base of sup plies but there is no question that a Spanish fleet would be obliged to encounter the best ships of our navy in order lo en ter the harbor The other places are con trolled by neutral powers who could not furnish fuel from the fact that it is contra band of war Estimates which have been obtained on good uthotity of the supply of coal in the West Indies show that there are not over 50000 Ions at Juan The government statistics indicate that within the last twelve months from 20000 lo 25 000 tons were sent lo this destination while it is claimed about 20000 Ions have been bought by Spain and shipped from Wales since January i In spite of the insurrection in Cuba the sugar refineries steam plants In the mining districts electric light works and factories In the cities have consumed much of the coal sent from this country During the last five years from 200000 to 243000 have been exported to Cuba annually from Ibe United States The average for the past year was about 225000 Supposing the consumption to be about as usual it is calculated that there can not be over 25000 Ions in Havana today The did not desire to enlist to Hopkinsville and reorganize a company for State Guard Service and this being true you should address your complaint to Capt Ireland and those who desire to go home rather than to meW O BRADLEY Here is what Adjt Gen Collier says about it The company had become disorganized and substantially disbanded owing to Its Captains having been Intoxicated and In capacitated for was made by Capt Feland himself from my original draft and he was pleased to gel out without further trouble I regret the necessity of having to make the cir cumstances public but I feel that such misrepresentation of the motives govern log this department would greatly injure its efficiency at time Capt Gaines and Lieut Casey who were on the ground were authorized to raise a company to take the place of Fe lands company and were directed to en list In the new company such members of Felands company as desired to remain and if a sufficient number of them remained to justify they would be
