Will Subscribe the War Fund Comparison of Prices Had for Farm Products Special correspondence Washington D C April 25 i8gSThie people of the United States the plain people are to be given an opportunity in case of war to subscribe to the war fund to become bondholders Will they embrace that oppor tunity Will they make them selves members of that class which has been so much inveighed against by politicians arid dema gogues especially the latter during the past few years Espec ially will the farmers of the coun try the substantial citizens who have experienced perhaps the greatest improvement in their fi nancial condition of any class since the rejection of free coinage and the determination to adopt again the protective systemwill they become bondholders by sub scribing to the war loan which is to be raised in case a war is re quired to free the people of Cuba from the oppressions and cruelties to which they have been subjected in the past Of course their first work on the return of good prices whichcame without the free and unlimited coinage of silver was to pay off their mortgages and that they displayed their usual good business judgment m doing this is shown by the fact already announced over and over again that mort gages amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars were canceled by the farmers during the first year of the return of prosperity the amount of money which received for their products has so greatly increased that there s good reason to believe that many of that class of citizens of he United States will stand ready o patriotically subscribe to the loan and enter themselves in he list of those coming to the as sistance of the government and be coming members of the berated classbondholdersThat of money which the farmers have received or their products since the inaug uration of President McKinley is far in excess of that which they received in the corresponding period prior to his inauguration must be maybeto examine some figures bearing- upon this subject That the adoption of the pro tective tariff and the conse quent activity and increased increased earnings among the manufacturers and those whose earnings are affected by manufac tures has resulted in au increase in prices is quite apparent Fig ures were recently quoted show ing an advance in prices of practi cally all farm products since the adoption of the Dingley tariff bill in July 1897 comparing those prices with those of April i I8g8 Wheat corn oats barley rye beeves sheep hogs lard butter beans potatoes hides wool hops hay and cotton seedall showing an advance Here is a table comparing the prices of a few of the more important products in the New York markets at the date of President McKinleys inaugura tion and the latest attainable date April 18 1898 While the num ber of articles considered is small it includes all important classes of farm production and illustrates to some extent the increase in money which the farmers of the country have When it is remembered that a very large proportion of the prod ucts of the farm are sold In the home markets and that the above figures relate to the prices in this country at the two dates men tioned it will be seen that the money which the farmers have re ceived during the past thirteen months for their products is greatly in excess of that which they received earlier This fact is illustrated by a comparison of present prices with those ranging back to 1894 Wheat which is quoted in the above table at 109 on April i8th sold in that same market on October 4 1894 at pre cisely onehalf its present price or 54J4 cents per bushel Wool sold June 7 1895 at practically one half its present price the quotations for that date being 16 cents per pound against 30 cents at the date quoted above The quota tions for beef familyon July 2 1896 were 750 per barrel against 1100 at the last quoted in the above table The above statements quoted from official reports published by the government regarding the earlier dates and that for March i8th being from the New York Tribune give something of an idea of the Receipts of the farmer under the beneficent influences of a pro tective tariff and a currency free from attacks of those who would reduce it to an uncertain basis The net receipts or gain in receipts of the farmer through this advance in prices of the large bulk of their articles which they sell for consump tion at home cannot be definitely measured but it is practicable to determine the increase of the amount received by them for the small proportion of their products which they send abroad Here is a little statement showing the value of the exportations of breadstuffs provisions and cotton in the thir teen months since the inauguration of President McKinley and comparing the receipts for those articles during that period with those of the thirteen months just prior to his inauguration While it gives but a small porportion of the in creased receipts of the farmers be cause of the fact that but a small proportion of their products are sold abroad it does give some basis for an estimate of their in creased receipts under McKinley prosperityItion 718337030 who resides at Chicago visited this county last week Mr haley Is owner of a number of coal mines located in Ken lucky Indiana and Ohio Strikes were reporled last week at both Taylor and Powderly mines A loiter received here from a miner at Taylor mines confirmed the one report and a miner who visited Earlington from Powderly gave the information about the Strike at that place Even the Uarnesley miners have been struck by the wave of patriotism through the land and it is very likely that some of those hardy coal producers will offer their services to Uncle Sam Among the patti otic citizens will be found our miners The CoOperative Coal Co of Uarnsley will hold their annual election of officers posidonhave announced themselves and the con test promises to be interesting The reelection of the officers of the St Bernard Coal Co indicates that the stock holders are well pleased and it is a deserved companies their affairs than this company and all outsiders agree that it is a pleasure to diplomatic triumph It is understood to day that a convention has been entered into which was concluded today between this country and Great Britain declaring that during the present hostilities between ibe United States and Spain coal shall be held by the two nations to be contraband of warand this declaration will be maintained by England wherever her flag floats deepestinteresttives of the five great powers here Russia concurs with the United States which Is a distinctly friendly act in diplomatic phrase meaning that she will join in en forcing this determination France is dis tinctly opposed to it as is Austria while Holland and Belgium are noncommilal as is Germany which reserves her expression of opinion though unofficially it is openly declared that Germany is anything but pleased with this evidence of an un derstanding between the two great English speaking nations The farreachine consequence of this movement can scarcely be overrated It is creating a precedent touching matter that must always be of the highest importance so long as coal is the greatest necessity to steam power on land or sea It is ot the utmost consequence now to have Great Britalu with us in the maintenance of so important a military maritime principle which will be of the greatest consequence to England in future for it makes her au thority on this subject paramount Encland has coaling stations all over the seven seas and she keeps them well stocked Russia is following her example France consid ering her naval importance has somewhat neglected lo secure permanent coaling stations relying more than any other power upon colliers and great ocean coal yard like the Cape Verde Islands St Vincent This decision will be a great blow to enter prising coal dealers in Halifax and the Canadian ports who were preparing to transact a great deal of business with Spanish warships and Spains coalcarrying vessels But for the persevering efforts of the British Ambassador here Sir
