Louisville has published a second statement and call in the effort to secure more liberal response Contributions of eIther money or supplies to this committee will reach the suffering Cubans with out loss of time SOME recent bulletins issued by the Kentucky Agricultural Expe ri ment Station Lexington are particularly interesting and in structive One is on Strawberries 6ne on Potatoes and the third is devoted to the Woolly Mullein and The Gape Disease of Poultry These bulletins may be had free by any citizen of Kentucky who sends his name and address for that purpose HON FREDERICK B GORDON of Columbus Ga in a recent communication to the Manufac turers Record gives the mossbacks of that section a hard shot saying For real industrial advancement Georgia must dream no longer along the line of dead issues and must drop from political prefer ment the many demagogues who fatten upon the prejudices of the people Let Southern speakers deal less in traditional oratory and and teach the people the sound economic principles that must pre vail ere the South can reach the position in the industrial world which she claims This is one of the many evidences of a change of sentiment in the New South TilE statistician of thu Depart ment of Agriculture has just issued some figures which are of much interest to farmers because they show the great improvement during the past year in farm products and farm stock The farmers of the United States he is quoted as saying have received some thing like 130000000 more for their cereal crops than they did in 1896 and j58ooobooo more t han for those of any preceding tear since 1892 The hay crop lotwithstanding it was the largest vith one exception ever raised ommanded an increased price per ton wool is higher than at any time since 1893 and all other pro ducts with the exception of cotton show a corresponding im provement over the conditions of a year ago The statistics relating to farm animals arc still more sig nificant During 1897 the farm horses increased in value over I 25000000 the mules over 6000000 the milch cows 65 000000 other cattle over 104 000000 sheep 25000000 hogs over 8000000 etc making a total increase of farm stock of something like 240000000 The statistics show that this rc markable increase in values is weUI distributed over the whole country there being not a single State or Territory which does not report marked improvement in live stock as well asfarm products In the so called mortgaged plastered States of Kansas and Nebraska the value of farm animals increased during the year 200000000 in the form er it floating from a school house they would know what it was But THE BEE has in its possession a picture of a flag drawn by a young American citizen that emphasises the ne cessity of such a knowledge reference Sheriff Martins Acquittal From Harpers Weekly Sheriff Martin and his deputies have been acquitted of charges of manslaughter on which they have been on trial for some time We believe on the evidence that has been presented to the jury and that is known to the public that the verdict of not guilty was just and that Sheriff Martin and his deputies are to be honored for resorting to extreme measures in upholding the law Such extreme measures ought to be resorted to very much oftener than they arc in this country The sovereigmty of the law is all the sovereignty that we have and suc cessful assaults upon it make for anarchy Notwithstanding this the conduct of some of the daily newspapers in treating of this sub ject has been shameful It has been assumed that the officers of the law were guilty of murder the case has been tried outside of the courtroom the accused were convicted without a patticle of evidence and now that the trial has ended in acquittal the judge the jury and the counsel for the defense are exposed to viru lent abuse including indecent caricature The extreme limit of criminal defiance of the law and of murderous intent was reached byone newspaper which cunningly suggested to the miners that they throw a dynamite bomb among the deputies as they sat in the courtroom This one bit of defiance colors the whole attitude of that part of the daily press which made its business to try and condemn lIt accused outside of the court and without regard to what was going on inside andI this state of things will con privileges i the courts determine to do their j duty and to punish for contempt every editor who is guilty of in fringing upon the province and jurisdiction of judges and juries Special Reduced Rates Over L i N to Nashville The L N Railroad corner on which the building stands but a narrow alleyway in the rear is always dark and here is where the entrance has usually been effected The front door job seems a little strange for the reason that the lock had been turned again after the door was opened and when discovered next morning the door stood ajar and could not be closed until the lock was reversed But this is probably explained by the idea that tile lock was so turned with the belief that it was a spring lock and would fasten when the door was closed againThe following articles are reported to have been taken Three gold mounted Terror Last Saturday morning during the temporary absence of the boss editor the three lady compositors of this office were seated around a table busily engaged in writing and discussing the bewitching beauties of Easter headgear when the sound of footsteps was heard above the general chatter and the ladies looked up to welcome the visitor They were transfixed with aston ishment to find themselves con fronted by a huge bull who was regarding the startled trio with great fixedness of gaze and evident admiration Had a real live mouse appeared suddenly before them it would not have caused greater alarm or incited prompter action With a scream which made the eyes of Taurus hang out and the bloodcurdle in his veins Miss Frankie Stokes arose and with a bound which would have immortal ized an acrobat she alighted on an imposing table six feet away putinof screams just two octaves above a steam whistle In one and threefourth seconds Miss Annie Ashby had disappeared through the back door sixty feet to the rear rendering a selected assortment of creams the pitch and force of which materially damaged the overhead plastering Miss Alice Bourland sought safety in instant flight running frantically around in a circle of six feet diameter screaming with a persistence and vigor that so bewildered the visitor that in his confusion he advanced to the table and began browsing upon the flowers and lilies which adorned Miss Stokes cherished hat with great relish and satisfaction The foreman Mr Ruby appear ed on the scene in a jiffy and seiz ing a chair advanced fearlessly upon the Taurus who with fast closed eyes was reveling in the complete enjoyment of a new spring bonnet At this juncture the doors were dashed in by the citizens who had turned out en masse under the im pression that the Spanish had landed and were making a descent upon TilE BEE office and were cer tainly murdering the helpless at taches of the same A general charge put the bull to flight a sortie rescued the dismantled head javswhichshape will by the addition ofa few springs and leaves maintain its standing in the prevailing styleThe object of the visit remains a mystery Increase in Value and Silver Con tinues to Decline Marked Reduction in Prices of tinny Articles Used by Farmers Special Correspondence Washington D C March 20 1898 Silver continues to fall and farm products continue to rise The latest number of Bradstrccts1 that standard publication upon which Democrats so much relied for data upon which to base their arguments in the campaign of 1896 shows that silver which was 69 cents per ounce on July i just previous to the adoption of the Chicago platform had fallen on March I 1898 twentyone months later to 54 6 cents while nearly all farm products had ad vanced Nearly every one of the leading cereals it says and their products including flour ad vanced during February The same is true in many other articles of farm production Out of 108 staple articles whose prices are followed by Bradstrcets more than onehalf have advanced dur lag the month of February while only 15 declined The steady ad vance in the prices of all articles of farm production in the face of the steady fall in the price of silver is so strongly marked and in such sharp contrast with the assertions made by the Chicago platform and the silver supporters in the cam paigns of 1894 and 1896 that a comparison of the present prices of the various articles of farm pro duction with those which prevailed at the adoption of the Chicago platform will be of general interest and especially timely at this mo ment in view of the insistence ot the Democrats and Populists that the silver issue must again be made the leading feature of the campaigns The following table compiled from Bradstrccts gives prices of various articles of farm production on July i 1896 compared with March i 1898 is chosen because of its proximity to the date of the adoption of the Chicago platform The prices quoted in the tables below are those of the New York market unless otherwise specified July i 96 Marcia i 88 Silver per ounceS 6gH f S4 Wheat No a Red64i ioj Corn Nox33 331
