For all purposes the existing practical monetary standard might well be accepted as if it were a fundamental physical factor in the position of the country, like the Mississippi mountains. river or tne Kock-Tunneling, irrigation and other works of man may gradually alter the economic significance of the Rocky mountains, while the im provement of navigation and the regulation of overflow may also affect the relations of the Mississippi river to the welfare of the great valley that it drains. In like manner there may gradually come about important changes in so fundamental a thing as the standard by which men measure values. But great nations arc likely to make such changes gradually and conservatively, and laws may be expected to follow timidly and tardily where practical business facts have led the way. Taking all things into account, it is hardly a rash or exaggerated thing to say that for the present in this country the gold standard is about as firmly established a fact as a republican form of government. Wc are not discussing what ought to be or what ought not to be. But we arc asking men to admit the hard facts. In England, certainly, the gold standard is a much firmer tact than the Established Church, the privileges of landed property, the hereditary House of Lords, or even the institution of royalty. India's silver circulation is soon inevitably to be made subsidiary to gold as the standard of reckoning. Russia has now completed all her arrangements for the practical adoption of the Japan has entered the list of the nations, and nothing but the lack of a really authoritive central government in China can long prevent some important steps in that country in the same direction. John Courtot, a Frenchman who formerly lived here, shot himself in the mouth at Memphis last Thursday and died from the effects of the wound on Sunday. The wile of the deceased is a sister of Rev. A. M. Coenen, pastor of the Catholic church at this place. Mr. Courtot had the misfortune to lose his home, workshop and contents by fire on March 1st, in Louisville. Just four years before that date he had a similar fire. His wife taught French down stairs and mended fine laces. He had a cleaning establishment upstairs with a gasoline heater from which the fire originated, burning all the goods of customers which were in the place. This almost frenzied him and he left on the first train for Evansville, thence to Earlington and afterwards to Memphis where the tragedy was enacted. Situation at Hlddlesboro Growing Very Serious. It illustrates tho faithful and unfaithful uso of different gifts and talents and tho results. It may well introduce as to tho study of tho subject of how wo should keep tho Christian Endeavor pledge 1. Wo should koop tho plcdgo as a duty and an opportunity from Christ. In tho parablo of tho talents tlio master who goos away and intrusts talents fo his servants represents Jesus Christ, who has gono to heaven and left duties and opportnnities to His disciples. Tho duties and opportunities of tho Eudcavor society as roprosen ted by tho plodges aro obligations owed to Christ. Wo pledgo oursoives to Him. Our vows aro given not to tho society, but to Christ. Wo promiso Him that wo will do whatever Ho would liko to havo us do. That moment tho Christian Eudeavor society with all its opportunities for servico be comes Christ's viuoyard. Tho opportu nities becomo talents intrusted by Him to us, to bo ueed for Him and to bo ao counted for to Him. If wo would koop these facta constantly in mind, wo would keep tho plcdgo moro faithfully. 3, Wo should koep tho plcdgo in accordance with our diversified gifts. All tho servants did not havo tho earno number of talents. To ono tho master gavo flvo talents, to another two and to nnothor but ono, according to tho ability of each ono. Christ has not givon us all tho samo ability. To somo Ho has given flvo talents, to others but ono. This should not mako thosowJio possoss great ability proud and arrogant, but humblo and oharitablo, since it is a gift of Christ and sinco also great nbilitics bring correspondingly great responsibilities Nor should thoso who havo but ono talent say, "Sinco I can do so littlo I will do nothing. " If Christ has only given us ono talent, Ho will only us to account for ono, but Ho will call us to account for that ono. Tho unfaithful sorvaut did not escapo punishment bocauso ho only had ono talent. Ho was hold to as strict an account as tho servant who had flvo talents. With all tho ability, bo it much or littlo, that tho Master has given us let us perform tho duties and obligations of our plcdgo. 0. Wo should keep tho pledgo faith- Post-Expres- March 4, reveals William McKiniey as a patriotic American, a cautious but firm poli tician in his relations with Con- gross, a pronounced but unfactional Republican in his relations with party, a consistent protectionist in his economic convictions, a courag eous inenu ol civil service reform and of currency reform and an official who. knowimr war as a soldier and loving peace as a citi zen, cultivates the tlnncs which make for peace in the spirit and attitude of our Government, while not unmindful of that dutv of read iness for war which emergencies, neither of our creation nor of our choosing, have forced upon the national attention.
