Louisville and Nashville railroad is preparing to carry as many troops from Louisville and Kentucky or from any point on its line as may be raised said Superintendent Evans of that road yesterday So far as I know no official of the road has been approached about carrying troops to the sea coast 1 have seen considerable in the papers about different roads having been contracted with to carry troops and equipment but the officials have always denied these stories If we were given orders to move troops tonight we would be ready to carry several thousand in a day or two The Gold Standard a Fact to be Accepted For better or for worse the great commercial nations of the world have concluded to transact their business and measure their exchanges in terms of single gold standard says the Reuinv of Reviews The people of the United States in 1896 decided that quite apart from the theory of the ques ton it was expedient for this country to stand with the rest of the world in this particular matter of the measure of value For all practical purposes the existing monetary standard might well be accepted as if it were a fundamental physical factor in the position of the country like the Mississippi river or the Rocky mountains Tunneling irrigation and other works of man may gradually alter the economic significance of the Rocky mountains while the im provement of navigation and the regulation of overflow may also af fect the relations of the Mississippi river to the welfare of the great valley that it drains In like manner there may gradually come about important changes in so fundamental a thing as the stand ard by which men measure values But great nations are likely to make such changes gradually and conservatively and laws may be expected to follow timidly and tardily where practical business facts have led the way Taking all things into account it is hardly a rash or exaggerated thing to say that for the present in this coun try the gold standard iff about as firmly established a fact as arc publican form of government We are not discussing what ought to be or what ought not to be But we are asking men to admit the hard facts In England certainly the gold standard is a much firmer tact than the Established Church the privi leges of landed property the her editary House of Lords or even the institution of royalty Indias silver circulation is soon inevitably to be made subsidiary to gold as the standard of reckoning Rus sia has now completed all her are rangements for the practical adop Japanhasstandard nations and nothing but the lack of a really authoritive cen tral government in China can long prevent some important steps in that country in the same direction Theory in these matters is one thing and practice is another The theory of international bit metallism may continue to be cherished by a man who allows himself to perceive that for the present and near future no inter national coinage agreement in favor of silver can be se curedIWorking of Permissive Laws L A W Bulletin Permissive road laws will not bring the millennium good roads upon us with a rush There is still much opposition to road im provement and it will take a Board Again Leaves Ha vana for Key West Developments at Havana Maine court of inquiry sailed at 530 yesterday afternoon on the Mangrove for Key West The members said goodhy to Consul General Lee and Capt Sigsbee and gave it out that the sittings would probably be resumed at Key West on board the battle ship Iowa Members decline to discuss their work but the general belief will be that their verdict will be that the explosion was the result of exter nal agency Intervention Policy President has decided to post pone intervention by force until late in the fall or early winter Need of more preparation and fear of the rainy season with its yellow fever epidemic his reasons Secretary Long and the naval experts coincide in the Presidents decision but Assistant Secretary Roosevelt is in that the Iowa was coming was contradicted through official sources but the court will hold its sessions in Key West on the Iowa and if they decide to return to Havana for further evidence which now seems probable the Iowa will bring them back The Mangrove will be laid up because her commanding officer is soon to retire From all circumstances it seems very probable that the Iowa with the court will enter Havana next within a few days The members of the board declare that they have no idea as to the length of their stay at Key West The Maine officers will be detained here with the divers steam railroad costs from 4000 to 5000 and weighs 38000 pounds or nineteen tons A mail car which costs from 3000 to 2500 and is shorter by about onequarter than the ordinary passenger coach weighs 32 000 pounds or sixteen tons A baggage car without the baggage in it weighs 28 000 pounds or fourteen tons and costs about as much as a mail car A sleeping car is more expensive than any of the others and it weighs a good deal more too A plain simple but durable sleeping car with observatory attachments literary an nex and culinary department costs any where from 10000 to 20000 The average weight of a sleeping car is from twenty to twentytwo tons A full train in motion as a little figuring will show is no light affair The ordinary weight of the railroad locomotive for pass enger service inclusive of tender but not of fuel in the tender is forty tons One baggage car weighs fourteen tons and one mail car sixteen tons bringing up the weight of the locomotive and the baggage and mall cars 10 seventy tons Six pass enger cars at an average of nineteen tons weight of baggage of the fuel carried weight of a train made up of a locomotive and eight cars would be 18 tons or 368 000 pounds exclusive of the passengers and mall matter Pulling 184 tons along rails at the rate of fifty miles an hour or more is an achievement which has not been easily brought about and the more the problem is studied the more clearly it is understood how far the mechanical work on railroad has been pushed There were by the last figures reported 30000 locomotives in use on time Amtrican railroads 26000 pass enger cars and 8000 mail and baggage cars Those figures seem large until com pared with the number of freight cars on American railroads and then they seem insignificant for the number of freight cars in use is 1250000 Freight cars among the railroad men are divided into four classes flat cars such as are used for the transportation of stone machinery and lumber box cats such as are used for the transportation of grain fruit and ordinary merchandise stock carl such as are used for cattle and coal cars such as are used for the transportation Of coal and oil those used for oil being supplied with tanks The average weight of a flat or gondola car is seven tons The car costs from 300 to 400 Box cats weigh a ton moreand cost too mote each Stock cars weigh eight tons each on the average coal cars weigh three tons each It costs about 200 to build coal or oil oars and they are designed to carry five tons apiece The weight of fifty coal cars is ISO tons and of the contents if all filled 250 tons which with locomotive and ca boose added make 420 tons as the weight of a train It may be added roughly that the weight of loaded trains passenger coal or freight ranges from 200 to 550 tons The lighter the train the greater the speed thats the railroad rule Boston Traveler II UtoV SlnlCo Gum Balsam Is a scientific oiiiidy bawd oil modern discoveries and corn oJ by not Buffer him to turn unto Oed lion 7 4 8 For Herod had laid hold on John and bound him and put him in prison for Hcrodlas1 sake his brother Philips wlfo Thcso aro among tbo seemingly strange things That Oat who controls all things even the doTll for thorn can bo nothing beyond Ills control should permit Joseph to bo stolen sold Into slavery falsely no cused and imprisoned David to bo hunted as a Mid unto him It Is not lawful for thee to have her Therefore for his faithfulness ho is put in prison Would it havo been better for him to have said nothing about this slnt Might he have sold It is no Christs sake lieAmI when ho would havo put him to death ho feared tho multitude because they counted him as n prophet How full of fears this wretched specimen of self in dulgent humanity was Ho feared the woman under whoso control ho had placed himself for lusts sake Ho feared tho pee plo over whom ho was placed and ho ovl dently feared tho hereafter for ho did many things and would doubtless have done moro if such doing would have rondo him sure of heaven without requiring him to giro up his darling sin 0 7 But when Herods birthday was kept tho daughter of Hcrodlas danced before them and pleased Herod Whereupon ho promised with an oath to giro her whatsoever sIlO would ask Feast days and birthdays must bo kept tho entertAin- ment business must go on no matter what becomes of Christ or Ills heralds We aro suro that Ho was not invited to this feast and neither was Ills faithful John This was like Belshazzars feast tho dovllf own and ho knew what ho was up to He was running this thing to accomplish his purpose now well ho enabled that poor godless girl to dance that day How ho enabled her to captivate tho sinful heart of Herod anti to lend him in his excitement to mako her this great promise and all to secure tho death of John I 8 And she being before instructed of her mother said Glvo me hero John Bap tists head in a charger Wo read in II Chron xxii 8 concerning a certain king that his mother was his counselor to do wickedly Wo know also that Rebekah was neither her own friend nor her sons when sho counseled him to Ho to his fa thor Lying and deceit have tho same au less for tho oaths sako and them which sat with him at meat ho commanded to bo given her His honor before his guests was at stake and ho dared not show him self a man Perhaps thcro was no man In him It may have been all beast all carnal of tho lowest kind Ho could truthfully have said I cannot give what la not mine and human life is not in my power to glvi or take That however was too noblo for such n creature anti ho dared not go against Hcrodlas Wo havo rJl had other masters can wo now truly say Ono Is my Master oven Christ whoso I am and whom I server 10 And ho sent and beheaded John In tho prison Not long before John had sent messengers to Jesus inquiring if Hi was tho Christ or if there was yet another to bo looked for Jesus wrought miracles and sent tho messengers to tell Tohn what they hod seen and heard and added Blessed Is ho whosoever shall not ho offended in Mo chapter xl 0 Wo have no record that Jesus over went to see him Now is hearth tho tramp of feet Some ono is coming to see him Is it tho Lord and Master Ills cell door swings open Ho Is wanted not for earth but for heaven In a moment it is over for tho damsel awaits her sift and angels and redeemed spirits tho dovil has the least Idea of thobliss of tho redeemed when ho is allowed to kill their bodies If so would ho bo so desirous to usher them Into such glory 12II And lila disciples camo and took up DOlterTOPIC How to keep tho Christian Endeavor pledsoJIath xxv lAn The parable of tho talents which forms our topical reference was spoken by Christ to n mixed multitude on the taunt of Olives a short time before His crucifixion It illustrates tho faithful and unfaithful uso of different gifts and talents and tho results It may well introduce us to tho study of tho of how wo should keep tboOhrlstlllOj Endeavor pledge 1 Wo should koop tho pledge as a duty and an opportunity from Christ In tho parable of tho talents the master who goes away and intrusts talents to his servants represents Jesus Christ who has gone to heaven and left duties and opportunities to His disciples Tho duties and opportunities of the Endeavor society as represented by the pledges aro obligations owed to Christ We pledge ourselves to Him Our vows aro given not to the society but to Christ Wo promise Him that wo will do whatever like to havo us do That mo most tho Christian Endeavor society with all its opportunities for service be comes Christs vineyard The opportunities become talents intrusted by Him to us to bo used for Him and to bo no counted for to Him If wo would keep these facts constantly in mind we would keep tho pledge more faithfully 2 We should keep the pledge in ac cordance with our diversified gifts All tho servants did not havo tho eamo number of talents To ono tho master gave five talents to another two and to another but ono according to tho abil Ityof each one Christ has not given us all tho same ability To somo Ho has given five talents to others but one This should not snake those who possess great ability proud and arrogant but bumblo and charitable since it is a gift of Christ and sinco also great abilities bring correspondingly great responsible Itioa Nor should those who havo but ono talent say Slnco I can do so little I will do nothing If Christ has only given us ono talent Ho will only re quire us to account for ono but Ho will call us to account for that one Tho tin faithful servant did not escape punishment because ho only had one talent Ho was hold to as strict an account as tho servant who had fivo talents With all tho ability bo it much or little that tho Master has given us let us por form tho duties and obligations of our pledge 8 Wo should keep tho pledge faith fully in view of tho fact that Christ will call us to account for our stoward ship If faithful wo will bo rewarded in proportion to our faithfulness j if un faithful if neglectful wo will receive Christs condemnation Let us not for got also that tho unfaithful servant simply neglected his talent Ho did not abuse it simply lot it alone and yet Christ hold him accountable How many Endeavorcrs are neglecting their splen I did opportunities How can wo account
