only Republican news paper in the Second Congressional District The suspension of Ihe Hopkinsvilla Banner leaves the Earlington BEE the only Republican paper in the Second congressional district Courier Journ aI a The Earlington DEE is one of the brightest and best printed exchanges on our list and deserves the support It apparently receives from the commun ity in the midst of which it is pub s lished The Log Cabin a a a The Ilbpklnsville Banner and Earl r ington DIE have been consolidatedthe r Banner making Its last appearance on last Friday after a four years strug gle with unfeeling delinquents and persistent printers Central City Re publican a a W The last Issue os the Banner which came out Monday announced the sus pension of the paper The subscription- list has been transferred to the Earl ington BIB Mr L O Brnmfield the editor is a young man of intelli K ace and industry and labored hard to make the Banner a good paper It deserved a better support from the 4000 Republicans of Christian county Hopkinsvilla Kentuckian What is said is said in the kind liest spirit and many are the en couragingwords we have received for the success of TilE BEE in its enlarged business and widened and widening field Our intention is to make TilE BEE better and more deserving as rapidly as the hearty support of its friends and patrons will justify Give us the benefit of your good words aswell as of your subscrip tionsand your business that may come in our line Prejudice The antiadministration papers however smalland the paper built upon such narrow policy as will recognize nothing good but that which proceeds from its own party and pe counter cannot but be very smallthese papers are shooting their little paper pellets at the Presidents message with as much assurance as the small boy who chews paper wads t with which to decorate the ceiling of the district school house t The flight of these small pellets h out of the blow guns of these pre judtcemarjufacturersfor revenue only can but excite the smiles or the condemnation of the thinking manThere is prejudice enough in the world at best and he who stands in position to wield an influence for good to his fellowmen robs his position of all dignity and does only evil when he stoops to gain a livelihood by a play upon and increase of prejudice But so it is One editor of this large class of small men headlines a partial report of the message in a most slighting manner yet upon his editorial page he allows a truth to creep from cover which robs his prejudicial headlines of all pointThis editor says truly of preju dice andsome men Prejudices more than other passion actuate men in their biased opinions Prejudices on account of religion politics or domestic relations so tinge their every action that magnanimity is a Cuban question are clears broad and statesmanlike as are his ehunciations upon the currency and other questions handled in Ills notable message to Congress His utterances contian no uncertain sound His position has been con servative and he is so yet but thee words with which he concludes his discussion of the Cuban question indicate that the government will not hesitate to take firm and decided ground when the necessity arisesHe concludes thus The near future will demonstrate whether Ibe indiipensible condition of a righteous peace just alike lo the Cubans and to Spain as well as equitable to all our interests so intimately involved in the wel fare of Cuba is likely lo be attained If not the exigency of further and other ac lion by the United States will remain to be taken When that and the people who have confided to it the protection of their interests and honor and lo humanity Wage Reduction In Massachusetts The calamityites have been diligently quoting the news of a wage reduction to cotton mill employes at Fall River Mass The following enunciation of the Textile World of Boston candidly explains the whole matter to be the result of Southern competition as every thinking man recognizes must be the case It says One of two things will have to be done either the hours of labor in Massachusetts will have to be extended or the wages of operatives will have to be reduced The latter is the more probable Southern competition with Massachusetts mills is more detrimental than any foreign compe titian on the lower grades of goods VARIOUS rumors are afloat re the Church of the Immaculate Conception here by the Rev Father Valentine a priest from the Passionist Order of Louisville Ky and also of the silver jubilee of the church which occurred on the feast of the Immaculate Con ception the 8th inst The mission was a grandsuccess full of joy and happiness for the Catholic members and an edifying treat to the many nonCatholics who attended it The Rev Father Valentine is a giftedorator and an up to date warm hearted man who seems to take with every one Having worked as a coal miner in Pennsyl vania with his father in his boy hood days he seemed to be very much at home here and was in touch with the people and took great interest in them and easily won their hearts and in fact the hearts of all who met him On the day after the mission closed he took a trip through the mines Mr White engineer St Bernard mines kindly escorted him and gave him all the pointers on mining with the Iron men etc The Rev Fath er expressed himself as being well pleased with his trip through the mines and the kindness of Mr WhiteOn the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of the church the members of the congregation decorated and festooned the entrance on the out side and the interior of the church beautiful manner 1872 and 11897 in wreaths of evergreens the figures being silver were placedon either side of the sanctuary and just over the front of the sanctuary in silver letters on a bide back ground was suspended the words Silver Jubilee iA very pleasant feature of the Jubilee and greatly enjoyed by all was an organ recital or sacred con cert given in the church in the evening and a lecture by the Rev Father Valentine on Modern Chris tianity which was proven not to be Christianity at all The Rev Father Valentine is a genius he says that he never apologises I presume like Davy Crockett he isI always sure that he is right before going ahead As a lilting climax to the mission and jubilee the Rev Father Valentine with the assis tance of the congregation got up a surprise for the Rev Father Coenen in the way of a purse of silver amounting to four hundred dollars In the first place it was the intention of the members by the advice of the Rev Father Val entine to solicit among the Rev Father Coenens friends and get up a hundred dollars to buy him new vestments but during the mission the boiler of the steam heater in the church gave out and will have to be remedied this greatly worried Father Coenen as his funds were very low and the winter on us and he did not know what to do so theRev Father Valentine called his band of sojiciters for themoney to buy vestments together and had a secret meetingsecret from the Rev Father Coenenand turned their subscription lists into lists to get up money to purchase a new heater for the church which they succeded in doing in a creditable mannerOn night after the bilver u bilee the members of the congregation met in the hall over the parocial schoolhouse the band of solicitors having decorated the hall with fresh flowers Japanese lanterns banners parlor lamps etc and called together a commit tee of six gentlemen and had them call at the pastors residence and invited the Rev Father to meet members of the congregation and other friends in the hall They came tothe hall to find it full of pleasant faces and the stage beau tifully decorrated reflecting much credit on the ladies who did the workBefore the Rev Father Coenen could realize what was going to take place the Rev Father Valen tine who had been chosen master of ceremonies made a beautiful presentation speech addressing the Rev Father Coenen as as jub ilarian and presented him with four hundred dollars in silver and promissory notes to buy a new heater which was a complete sur prise to the Rev Father- It was some time before he could respond When he attempted to withemqionwas a picture too sublime for jthe writer to draw The Rev Father Valentine called for all the rnem iCrithe I forward =nit shake hands with the Father Micro Were several oi the veterans present after them the gentlemen and many of the ladies came forward and shook hands with the Father This was followed speechbywhich proved a decided hit and showed his broadness of mindand noble character as well as his force and eloquence by his kind mani festations of good cheer antI warm fellowship and encomiums of praise to our dear Holy Mother the Church The mayor is to Say the least a warm hearted excellent gentlemanAfter mayors speech the programme was continued con sisting of several songs with piano accompanyment and several pieces by Prof Phatenhauers brass band The Old Kentucky Home ren accompaniedbyand joined in by the Rev Father Valentine with his fine soprano voice was grand and impressive and calculated to make the bond ofI fellowship among us healthy andI strongThe singers and the band boys and also the honorable mayor andI wife and daughter were invited to the pastors residence where reoI frcshments were served but the mayor having an engagement was excused So ended the happy oc casion all feeling well pleased with the blending of good fellowship I The Rev Father Coenen has al I ways shown a love for his peopleI and an excellent I taste in providing innocent pleasure I and grand and noble instructions I for us in selecting grand I noble and holy men to lecture and I give missions to us for our guid ance and in the Rev Father Valentine as well as his other se lections has found one who has done much good in our midst and carries with him the sincere love of the congregation May the choicest blessings of our
