sel fish greedy plans they are indifferent to public calamity and are ready for any plot or plan that will continue them in public office and give them a personal following a The political principles of of demagogues can be shed as easily as clothing and the garments substituted may be of color necessary to harmonize with new surroundings They are political ac robats at one time and political cbame leons at another time It is as absurd to call their selfseeking public policy and genuine principle as to call foul water pure or rotten eggs sound Postal Banks in a Campaign In the 6th Illinois district a campaign for congressman is in progress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Congressman Cooke The sentiment for postal savings banks is so strong In Chi cago that both party platforms pledge the candidates to work for them if elected In a recent speech Henry S Boutell the Republican candidate said The people demand that congress at its next session shall provide for the es tablishment of postal savings banks under the control of the postoffice department and a measure looking to this endwould have my hearty support Postal savings banks have given satisfaction to the people wherever they have been tried Their existence in all parts of the country is a constant invitation to thrift and economy and wherever thrift and economy prevail poverty ignorance and crime outstanding interestbearing warrants Up to date the treasurer has called in and paid off 195 000 worth of the oldest of these warrants He now announces that on or about December 5 he will be able to pay off 200000 worth of the same sort of paper and will soon issue a call to that effect yearisin paid full the amount of old in terestbearing warrants paid off will largely exceed the amount of new interestbearing warrants is yearforthe years revenue began coming in Thus the floating debt will have been reduced considerably this year by means of m reased tax rate and next year it is hoped will be nearly wiped out The fortytwo and a half cents left after the ten cents fund is devoted to this purpose or the general ex penditure part of it is proving in sufficient to pay the States current expenses but the auditor says no more interestbearing warrants will be issued Instead they will bor row from the Sinking Fund what ever they lack to keep going and paying in cash and will f pay it in the Democratic party are complacently announcing that they are well satisfied anti really encouraged by the gains which they made in the late election Well it is a good tIming to be easily satisfied a very good thing But it may not be a bad plan to really look the field over now that the smoke of battle has cleared away and see just what has hap pened and whether it is the Democrats or the Republicans who have made substantial gains i On of the most important in fact the really important results of the election was its effect on the Senate and if any Democrat can find any gains there or any cause for happiness he will be entitled to a i6toi silver medal It is now apparent that no less than seven of the thirtyfour Democrats in the Senate are morally certain to be succeeded by Republicans and still another Lindsay of Kentucky who is equally certain to be laid on the shelf his place taken however by a freesilver Democrat Four of the Democratic Senators who will step down in March 1899 are Roach of North Dakota Turpie of Indiana White of California and Mitchell of Wisconsin Al though States did not hold elections which form the basis of this conclusion the elections of this month however may be said to have signed the death warrants of Gorman of Maryland Smith of New Jersey and Murphy of New York Mr Gormans suc cessor will be elected this coming winter and is sure to be a Repub lican The other two Edward Mur phy Jr of New York and James Smith T of New Jersey each has one more chance at the bat but judging from the results on the legislatures of their respective States both are doomed to be succeeded by Republicans in 1899 Thus it will be seen that there are probably six Dmocratic Senators who will give place to Republicans at that time three as it only takes a change of two to give an easy control to the Republicans the favorable result to that party is apparent The Senate today stands 43 Republicans 34 Democrats 5 silver Republicans 6 Populists i Independent Kyle of South Dakota and i vacancy from Oregon Of the 30 Senators who will re tire March 3 1899 n are Repub licans 15 Democrats 2 silver Republicans and 2 Populists The ii Republicans retiring are Aldrich R IjBurrows Mich i Clark Wyo Davis Minn i Hale Me Hanna Ohio Haw MassIan 3 Wilson Wash Ohios election made certain the return of Mr Hanna and of the re maining ten all save Clark of Wyoming and Wilson of Washing ton and there is good reason to believe that both of these will also bereelectedFifteen go out in 1899 Bate of Tennessee Cockrell of Missouri Daniel of Virginia Faulkner of West Virginia Gor man of Maryland Gray of Dela ware Mills of Texas Mitchell of Wisconsin Moneyof Mississippi Murphy of New York Pasco of Florida Roach of North Dakota Smith of New Jersey Turpie of Indiana and White of California Mr Gormans fate has already been determined A Republican will come from Maryland to the Senate in his place and last weeks election in New Jersey indicates clearly that a Republican will succeed Mr Smith These two changes will offset the Republican loss already referred to Tennessee Missouri Virginia Texas Mississippi and Florida will continue to be represented by Democrats reduc ing the certain Democratic mem bership to twentyfive That West Virginia Wisconsin North Dako Republicans who is in touch with the trend of events doubts gaininincrease the Republican member ship to fortyseven The belief here is that Delaware will send a Republican to succeed Gray if the bproughdothey did two years ago in the Ad dicksHiggins fight If present conditions continue Indiana Re publicans arc confident they will elect Turpies successor Indiana is an industrial State and with the improvement in her industries due to a Republican administration there should be no question about the complexion of the legislature she will elect next year In New York it is believed one year of Tammany will secure a Republican Uepl1bliean It is thus perfectly apparent that the result of the recent Demo cratic gains was to absolutely as surc the control of the Senaje to the Republicans What Kentucky Needs MessengerWhat in Kentucky is more tools and fewer is clean liness The first step in this direc tion is a clean skin This fact is well known Not only should the outside of the body be penectiy clean but the interior of the body as Veil Clean teeth clean moutb clean throat clean nasal passages are all requisites of per fect health The whole body as well as every organ in the body is lined with mucous membrane which is even more liable than the skin to become very dirty The most frequent cause of unclean mu cous membrane is catarrh Catarrh creates unnatural secretion even though the catarrh be very slight In this condi tion good health is impossible Dr Hariman has made a speciality o f treating chronic catarrh for nearly 40 years His great remedy Peruna has become known throughout the United States and Canada It is certainly the best realities God does bless and God does curse These things arc not exploded superstitions but actual facts demonstrated daily by the experiences of men Tho curse is just as real to the disobedient as the cleavosltofools its presence and cannot flee from it unless ho flee to God Himself Temporal blessings como to those who servo God Temporal blessings were promised to Israel in all tho relationsc of life City field fruit cattle kiileI sheep basket storeall were to bo u means of blessing to the nation Gods people are blessed in the things of this world The man who obeys God will find that blessing docs come upon him A godly lifo conduces to health godly habits tend even to worldly prosperity Godliness has its reward in the npprov al of a conscience void of offense before i God or man Temporal blessing does not preclude adversity Adversity it self may be a blessing prosperity is of ten a curse and in withholding it God often blesses us most richly and abun dantly Temporal Senator DeBoe Says It Was Made By the Collectors Brother Courier Journal The CourierJournal has re ceived the following letter from Senator W J Deboe Dear Sir Some of Ihe Louisville pa pers have published an article claiming it to be an interview with Mr T J Yandell Collector of Internal Revenue at Owens boro Ky- Wliile I have been very ur justly and un gentlemanly treated time and again by some newspapers fcr the sake of decency I have borne tbesn false and malicious attacks patiently I wish lo say that I have carried out every promise I made re lating lo appointments and shall continue lo to so unless Ihe wrongful acts of par tit s themselves would forbid same As lo Mr Yandells appointment I will say when I learned that Mr E T could not be appointed until he FranksI dicatid by the courts of malicious meat agaicst him I saw the President with other gentlemen and had Mr F JYandell appointed temporarily I had an understanding with Mr W O Yandell brother of the Collector that as soon as Mr Franks was acquitted of the indictment that he should be appointed Collector and Mr F J Yandell could have Ibe chief deputys place I wired Mr F J Yandell and asked him if he would stand by bis brothers agreement and he wired me that be would I wrote him a letter immediately and explained the whole matter to him be fore he ever received his commission I have acted in gocd faith in this matter from the beginning lo Ihe end and there are manyot the best men in Ihe State who I have just received a letter from Mr Yandell saying that be never reflected in an interview upon any one and be further states that he has been misrepresented in the supposed interview Mr Yandell has conducted the office of Collector in a business like way to the en tire satisfaction of the Government as well as that of hls friends If Mr Yanaell desires the position of chief deputy be can have it Respectfully WILLIAM J DEBOE To this letter was added the following I hereby concur in Ibe above statement as being correct Signed by W D Yan dell The Pilate Story Fake New York Tribune Dr Paul Haupt of John Hop kins university attaches no impor tance to the alleged letter of Pontius Pilate which some sensa tional journals are just exploiting The original he saysais believed to be to be spurious and is generally regarded as one of the curiosities of apochryphal liter ature The report is referred to in a number of the early patristic writings hit Biblical authorities do not incline to the belief that such an official message was ever sent to the Emporer There is also a tradition that Pilate sent two letters to Tiberius in which the crucifixion of Christ and the incidents leading thereunto were described and that these letters were read by St Peter and St Paul in the presence of the Em porer Nero ISIt is not probable that Gov Bradley will pay any attention to the letter of Thos S Pettit of Owenshoro in answer to the Governors letter of a week ago severely scoring Pettit for accusing him of conspiring with the Democrats of Daviess county in the late election Pettits answer claimed among other things that his personal let tcr was not marked confidential When the Governor was asked this afternoon if he would reply to Pet itts latest screed he simply hand ed Mr Pettits letter asking that the State Inspector be sent to Daviess county to the corres pondent This letter proves the statement of Pettit untrue as the letter is marked confidentialand not personal as the latter claimed A Song of the EveryDays jog LINCOLN Come sing me a song in the tongue I know- I am tired of the
