OCTOBER 14 1897 An Object Lesson ITIlE St Bernard excursion to the Nashville Exposition is a thing k of the past The two thousand people were carried safely the 102 7 miles to Nashville and safely re0 f turned The parade of the White Caps nearly one thou Isand in number through the of Nashville with hands aggregating seventy pieces com posed of young men and young sters of the miners was a revela tion to the Nashville people and the thousands of visitors To outside people the name of miner is synonunous with much that is low and brutal drunken J LIliuiilcss and ragsignorance and vice presssays little and the public heaVs little of the miner unless he should have a case in the police court or when during a great strike the militia is called to sup press an inflamed mob Hence this revelation A parade of menwell dressed intelligent orderly unsurpassed in the whole broad land Could the women and children have joined in this parade then would the lesson have been complete indeed And we wish to say that this object lesson this putting the Earlington St Charles and Diamond working man before the people in his true position was the chief aim of the management of the St Bernard Company If each individual whoM took part in that parade have heard the words of praise of i astonishment that greeted him on rail sides howonld be content On tljo Exposition grounds it was Capslrcatedr- and Saturday morning in order to awaken the sleeping populace and give them time to get ready for the start a precaution which proved afterwards to been wholly unnecessary as many did not retire at all and kept up such a noise during the night soughtitappointed time the bells pealed out the notice that it wan time to roll out and a half hour later there was scarcely a borne in the place that was not crowd was very interesting no irritation seemed to arouse people to hast ill considered words All were anxious to do their best Even the babies and small children entered into the good spirit of things apparently The compliments paid by Nash f ville people were so pleasant One of our old miners listening to some I of these praises said Yes but let me tell you the best of it all was our Captain was there walking with us the best friend the miner ever I had God bless him IrA Nashville gentleman said to one of the miners You speak so highly of your officials They must be very near to you The miner replied They are sir they know us through and through and Mr B has as much knowledge of our work as the hardest worker among us Yes sir he knows it all has run machines and knows just how all work should be done Trying to persuade a party to ry the seesaw one of the colored miners said No nol Dont take y Children up dar dat thing will all Ve uns safe on do groun You childruns stay arms in the bottom of that little skiff His only words were Boys Im shot and Im killedAs soon as opportunity offered they took him ashore in the dead of night and silently and sorrow fully buried him It seemed at that period of their journey only a question of time when each of them would share his fate None of them knew the address of the wife yet each of them thought of her awaiting year alter
