Foreman John R. Evaus and son Ellsworth, spent several days at the Tenn essee exposition last week, and are they now kept quite busy at times describing wonderful sights be saw there. It can not be charged that Ihe St. Bernard Company has gone into the brass band making business, but it is a fact that they hay.e more cr less interest in four bands at Ibis time. Thirty or forty cars of coke weekly shows a good steady business done by the St. Bernard Company, and a big improvement over that done last year. Several of the Hopkins counly coal companies still continue to find a good market for coal at St Louis and other northern points. The miners of Iowa and other western stales now threaten to mako trouble, and already several thousand ot them are on a strike. This teems to be .1 season ot strikes for the miners in many states. The scarcity ot coal cars interfered with the shipment of coal last weekt to a considerable extent. Enormous Profits Realized Dealers and Prices Going Higher. Decidedly the most intere:-tinplace in the city from a husincss point of view now is tho tobacco "hreahs," says the Courier Journal. The selling is so free it might quiet the market were it not that men are coming hero from all over the State to put their money in the weed. Tobacco men are recalling the famous "boom" ol 1887, when drouth destroyed fully half the crop then, as it has done now. They say it was impossible to buy any kind of tobacco then under $12 a hundred pounds, and that prices now are reasonable, even as compared with 1891, 1892 and A famous sale made.Jiy 1893. Sterling Edmunds in 1887 is recalled, lie had bought a lot of tobacco at $2. 10 per 100 pounds, and when he sold did so at the enormous advance of $21.50 a profit of about 2,000 per cent. Remarkable as this was it is being almost duplicated by rchandlers and traders, who bought last winter and early spring, but held their tobacco until now. One such man bought 200 or 300 hogsheads in the country at one cent a pound, He is now closing out and hardly anv of his hogsheads have sold under four cents a pound, while some have gone as high as six. No man would want a butter husincss than that. When tobacco is sold at auction the seller can reject the bid if it is not sufficiently high and then sell again. A warehouseman yesterday put up a lot of thnsc rejections. Tobacco which originally brought ninety cents a bunded went for $4 and $5 Instances of 200 and 300 per cent advances were quite common. One remarkable sale was made yesterday by a man who bought a a trashy hogshead from a dealer at When sold $1.95 last Friday. yesterday $4.95 was realized. A good many buyers predict the market will advance no further. Others more candid admit that higher prices would not surprise them. and taken from Harlan county until but few are left in tho hands of the people to take througli.tne by winter. Sunday night the store house of Day Bros., at Dawson, Ky., was entered and clothing taken which probably amounted to considerable value. It was impossible to determine the value of the goods taken. One of the burglars seemed to have entered the store ana passed out to tne oiiiers a large quantity of clothing, which they then proceeded to pick over and choose from. They went and came the same way and along the route thus indicated was found a pair of Day Bros, trousers stuck under a log or cross tie, which were identified by them. The Dawson officers are still at work on the case and it is understood that Day Bros, have offered a liberal eward for the capture and conviction of the burglars. y TWO HUNDRED MEN LEND A HAND. If not, get a bottle now and get Fire swept 'a part of the Buck ner's farm just cast of this place Monday, doing considerable damage to fences and young timber, threatening corn, which stood shocked in the field, roarifig through the underbrush in the timbered tract. There was imminent danger of its further spread but prompt work of some two hundred willing men stopped its progress and turned it back upon itself. While many people of Earling-to- n were eating dinner, the distress whistle at the air compressing plant of the St. Bernard Coal Company sounded the alarm of fire.and the news quickly spread that the Buckner farm, adjoining the property of that company was burning and the wind blowing directly the shaft. The news was telephoned to the mines, teams were started and men on horseback and afoot and awheel hurried to the scene of the conflagration with half finished dinners or no dinners at all, carrying shovels and other things handv to fight fire. And some of them have had sufllcent experieuce of late to know what to do. Two of these who know how to fight fire forgot the location of their coats one day last week and let them burn. Men went from the mines, the town, the railroad, the arms, until not less the 200 or 250 were strung out along the course of the advancing fire line. Fences were torn away, dead trees and stumps scraped around and men left on guard at doubtful points of vantage. The work was made thorough by scraping a path through the woods, from a lane in the Buckner fartri, well on if not quite to the Hopkinsville road. The leaves were- fired as. rapidly as the path wa3 made along its edge and this new fire started back to clear the way to the main body of the fire and stop its progress. ' This was done successfully and in a very short while. Within an hour and a half after the alarm was sounded the bulk of the men were on their way back to town, leaving Harry Corey and his force in charge with the fire under control. Rowland Rich came near being struck by a burning chunk which fell from the top of an apparently green tree under which he was working, It wasa good big chunk plentifully supplied with fire, and would have made an impression, but it missed him by a safe distance about six inches. Mike Long was not the only one whose manly eyes wee filled with tears at the sight or perhaps the lack of sight. But even he cheered up when he thought what a clear shooting ground for quails would be left by the fire. And Frank Arnold, too, looked happy at the prospect of using a pump gun on something animate in a good open space where walls and things could not intervene. The railroad boys ran a special out from one of the livery stables but it cannot be proven that they repaired anything. This is only one of the many fires that have been turned back and extinguished hereabouts in the past ten days. But this one had gained much greater headway. It burned from Grapevine and spread over the Buckner place. - W. C. T. U. The lucil Woman's Christian Temperance Union had a most enthusiastic meeting at the home of Mrs! Browder Myers Tuesday eyening. The threat of bringing saloons to our town has aroused a new interest in this cause. Two new members were received, Mrs. Idi Walker and Miss Celeste A. Moore. Mrs. Browder Myers was chosen delegate to the State Convention of the W. C T. U., which will be held at Glasgow, Ky., from the first to the fifth or October. - The Madisonville Union will be represented in the State Convention by Mrs. A. C. Long and Miss H. E. Brooks. The members of the convention have a pleasant program ahead of them in which work is well supplemented by diversion. There will doubtless be great pleasure derived from the hospitality of Glasgow, and after all business of the convention is disposed of the itinerary takes in the Mammoth Cave. The teachers of Magisterial District No. 2 met in the Public Schoo Building for their third annual association, last Friday. At ten o'clock order was called and devotional exercises conducted by Mr. W. F. Burr, followed by some uclignttul music irom some of the school girls. The welcome address by Mr. E. B. Bourland was very appropriate as was the response by Mr. J. A. Jodson. a subject interesting above all others to a live teacher, by Miss Minnie was introduced Bourland and discussed by other mtjmbeis. The ability to understand one's pupils was given up to be a factor of the greatest importance in the success of a teacher. Many very valuable devices for the study of child nature were presented. Prof. Smith added much to the interest of the subject. The Development of the Will Power of the child another favorite subject, was very ably presentA very lively ed by Mrs. Walker. discussion followed, Prof. Smith, Miss Foard, Mr Bourland and Mr. Cayce taking part. Mr. and Mrs. Burr and mother, Mrs. Reese, of Philadelphia being present were voted honary members. The subject was continued, Mrs. Reese expressing herself very forcibly, emphasizing a very clear distinction between the judgment and the will. "How to Develop tho Child's Reason, Judgment and Memory," was introduced by Miss S. VV. Foard, in a manner most profitable and enjoyable to all. The quotation, "A teacher should study to make himself useful to his pupils" was most aptly used. Mr. O. P. Bailey led in the discussion of the next subject, "Means of School Discipline." lie suggested many devices, but thinks a feeling of sympathy and fellowship between teacher and pupils must be secured for the best results. Mrs. Walker thinks co operation of parents the greatest factor. Suggestions were offered by Miss Davis, and Mr. Burr gave a very practical talk on the subject. Mr. Bourland thinks that to control one's pupils the teacher must first control himself. After a very complimentaiy speech by Mr. Burr in bcha'f of the work and advancement of the Association, the teachers adjourned for dinner. Child-study, To make our Funeral Equip,. Fifty Years Ago. One day last week a spark from a locomotive set fire to the grass along the track next to the Abore-ttin- i at the Southern edge of town. The fire spread rapidly into the enclosure and two or three choice young trees that helped to make up the large collection there, were ruined before the flames could be checked. Mr W. A. Toombs sped away on his wheel and with some assistance succeeded by hard work in getting the fire under control. A sweeping fire in the Arboretum would be disastrous to many voung trees that have cost much time and and labor in collecting, and would seriously injure this large collection of trees of great variety, which is one of perhaps only two Arboretum's in the State of Kentucky. At noon Tuesday fire was again discovered in the Arboretum. A few men got on the ground promptly and stopped its spread in short order. The conditions were just right for rapid' burning and the whole enclosure Would have been swept, but for quick work with brush and shovel. No damage was done. There was some lire beyond, along the railroad, but of little consequence. 50 Years of Cures. Court News. Very little of much importance has transpired in Circuit Court this week. ? STRAW GOODS!
