Tbe backbone of the striko was broken last week by Ihoimndsof miners in several different states returning to work. While the miners have lost au immense amount of money in wages by tbs late strike we aro inclined to believe thit Ihcir efforts for an increase of wages his not been in vain and that in the future they may look for higher wages. About the oaly gold mine not yet reporting the finding of a big nugget of gold mine is the Georgia gold mine owned and worked by our Kentucky friends. Tbe lease taken by Davis and Company on tbe Woodstock coil mine we are informed will soon expire, and who will tbe next firm be. Tbe late strike was much better for the miner than tbe operator as the price of coal in many cases was but little in advance of the regular price, yet it furnished tbe Kentucky miner about three months steady work. By the failure of the Woodstock Coal Company one miner among many other losers lost about $400 which is quite a loss for those who dig for a living. As the season of the year has arrived for tbe stocking of coal tbe miners have bright prospects ahead for continued steady work for tbe next few months. J. V. POOLE. For County Clerk, T. T. MORRIS. Mr. Herman Holmes, Travelling Passenger Agent Louisville & Nashville Railroad, No. 2 Noel Block, Nashville, Tenn. Dear Sir: It affords me much pleasure to state that the run you gave the Victor Herbert Twenty-seconRegiment Band was by long odds the fastest special run that I have had during my manag erial career, and I have had a number of specials. As lar as I can understand, ou made the run in eight hours and eighteen minutes to East St. Louis, although I was in bed, and so were alt the rest of our men. They could scarcely realize that they had reached their point of destination, as I had informed Victor Herbert and the rest of the members of the band that c were due to arrive at 10:15 a. m , but that generally means about noon. I want to thank you for the personal attention you gave my special, and hereafter I will believe you, no matter what you agree to do. I hope that I will soon have the opportunity to use the Louisville and Nashville at Nashville. With best wishes, in which Victor Herbert and the members of his famous Twcnty-reconRegiment Band join me, I am very truly yours, John Mahnkin. Much interest is felt here in the Senatorial contests in the several States, especially Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, Texas and Iowa, lor portions of tli legislatures which arc to be chosen in Iowa and New Jersey are to participate in the election of Senators. While all Senatorial elections an; subjects of cs cciai interest here, those this fall, especially in Ohio and Maryland, arc particularly so, because the control of the Senate from March 4, x8gg to 1901 may be determined by them. On the Ohio election will depend the complexion of the Senate between this and 1899, provided a Republican is seated from Oregon. So Ohio is the first to attract attention, because she may determine the control of the Senate for the next two years, while she may.with the other States above mentioned, control it for two'jears more. It is not surprising, then, that every politician from Ohio is eagerly questioned on his arrival here, and thnt those from other States are also the Mibject of attention when On they put in an appearar.ee. the Stales above named may d the control of the Senate during all of President McKinley's term. There are now 43 Republicans in the Senate, 32 silver Democrats, 5 5 silver Republicans, Populists and 3 sound money The Heath of Senator Democrats. George and the absence of a Senator from Oregon leaves the total number but 88. With a Republican seated from Oregon and one elected in Ohio, that party would, of one with the control the Senate. Even if a Democrat were appointed to succeed Senator George, it is considered probable that at least one of the Populists would with the Republ.cans, thus leaving that party in control of the Senate with the aid of the vote. Thirty-on- e seats in tho Senate are to be filled between now and March A, i8qq. Eleven of these are now filled by Republicans, fif teen by silver Democrats, two by Populists, two by silver Republicans and one by a It is conceded that Democrat. the Republicans will elect Senators from Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pensylvania, Iowa, Michigan and Minnesota; the Democrats in Virginia, Florida, South Carolina, Texas, and probably Missouri and Tennessee; with the Ohio Republicans successful this fall, the Republican party is practically sure of 41 votes in the Senate in the last half of McKinley's term, and the silver Democrats 25. There is reason to believe that may be sucthe Republicans sending members cessful In of their own party from Maryland, West Virginia, Indiana, Wisconsin, North Dakota, California,New York and New Jersey to succeed Democrats now holding seats from these States. Should this happen it would civc the party an easy Should control of the Senate. ol tley only win in de-pei Pop-u'is- t, these States they would be able to control the Senate with the vote of the It will be seen, then, that there is good reason for the intense in tcrcst with which the Ohio election of this fall is being watched. Upon it alone may depend the control of the Senate between this time und March 4th, 1899, while upon Ohio, Maryland, and a few other close Stales will depend the control after March 4th, 1899, to the end of President McKinley's term. Therefore, all eyes arc on Ohio as to her possible control of the Senate during the next eighteen months, and upon Ohio, Maryland and a few other close States as to the control of that body during the remainder of President McKinley's term. Happily, the reports from all of these States arc very encouraging to the Republicans. In Ohio there now remains no doubt of success, provided the members of the party in that State do not allow their good prospects to lead to a neglect of duty. They have some very shrewd men to deal with, and some very unscrupulous ones, loo, and between these two they will need to get out every vot. But if they do so, it is conceded that they will win. In Maryland the Republicans are very hopeful. They are all standing now well in line, and when the good round majority by which they carried the State last year is remembered, it is apparent that they have f,ood chances of success. Yet they have as shrewd and unscrupulous k man to fight as have the Oliioanf-- , for Arthur P. Gorman is a man who can only be beaten by the most heroic work on the part of the Republicans of Maryland. Adviceb from Ohio indicate that the votrrs there understand pretty clearly the heavy responsibility which rest upon them. A failure to elect a Republican from that State passes the control of the Senate into the hands of those opposed to President McKinley, at least until March of 1899, perhaps to the end of his tcim. It is a big responsibility, and it is well that the Ohio Republicans recognize it. Vice-Presiden- ur tttiens. t.
