the Nashville American has to say about the projector and chief worker for the success of the excursion Master Mechanic Thomas Walsh whom all the men know so well The central figure in the delegation and the projector and indefatigable worker for the success of the excursion was the veteran Col Thomas Wash Master Mechanic- of the shops at Howells He is one of tbe pioneers of the mechanical depart ment of the Louisville Nashville having served his apprenticeship In the shops in uisvitte and from the lower rung of tht ladder his by integrity and faithfulness risen step by step He left Louisville to accept the position of Master Mechanic at Memphis and was afterwards trans ferred to Mt Vernon III When the Louisville and Nashville shops were or ganized at Howells in 1883 be was sat lected to take charge and the wisdom of tbat choice has been fully demonstrated by Its successful management since that date When Howells was first inaugu rated he realized the necessity of foster- Ing and encouraging among the men a more brotherly and friendly feeling than usually exists among mechanics from all parts of the country and be lost no opportunity of following out this idea He organized various literary and social societies together with the band which yes terday made such a magnificent display at the exercises and he is very proud of bis boys He was the prime factor In getting the Very Encourag ing Outlook for Republicans FUTURE COMPLEXION OF TilE SENATE Washington D C Sept 21 Much interest is felt here in the Senatorial contests in the severa States especially Ohio Maryland New Jersey Texas and Iowa for portions of thA legislatures which are to be chosen in Iowa and New Jersey are to participate in the election of Senators While all Senatorialelections arm subjects of especial interest here those this fall especially in Ohio and Maryland arc particu larly so because the control of the Senate from March 4 1899 to 1901 may be determined by them On the Ohio election will depend the complexion of tile Senate between this and 1899 provided a Repub lican is seated from Oregon So Ohio is the first to attract at tention because she may determine the control of the Senate for the next two years while she may with the other States above mentioned control it for twoyears more It is not surprising then that every politician from Ohio is eagerly questioned on his arrival here and that those from other States are also the subject of attention when they put in an appearance On till States above named may de pend the control of the Senate during all of President McKinleys term There arc now 43 Republicans in the Senate 32 silver Democrats 5 silver Republicans socalled 5 Populists and 3sound money Democrats The ucath of Senator George and the absence of a Sen ator from Oregon leaves tine total number but 88 With a Republi can seated from Oregon and one elected in Ohio that party would with the cooperation of one Pop dst control the Senate Even if a Democrat were appointed to suc ceed Senator George it is consid ered probable that at least one of the Populists would cooperate with the Republicans thus leaving that party in control of the Senate with the aid of the Vice Presidents vote Thirtyone scats in the Senate are to be filled between now and March 4 1899 Eleven of these are now filled by Republicans fif teen by silver Democrats two by Populists two by silver Republicans and one by a sound money Democrat It is conceded that the Republicans will elect Senators from Maine Vermont Massachu setts Rhode Island Pensylvania Iowa Michigan and Minnesota the Democrats in Virginia Flori da South Carolina Texas and probably Missouri and Tennessee with the Ohio Republicans success ful this fall the Republican party is practically sure of 41 votes in the Senate in the last half of Mo Kinleys term and tlic silver Democrats 25- There is reason to believe that the Republicans may be suc cessful In sending members of their own party from Maryland West Virginia Indiana Wisconsin North Dakota CaliforniaNew York and New Jersey to succeed Democrats now holding seats from these States Should this happen jt would give the party an easy c ntrol of the Senate Should tl win inonchalfol voiY on these States they would be able to control the Senate with the vote of the VicePresident- It will be seen then that there is good reason for the intense interest with which the Ohio election of this tall is being watched Upon it alone may depend the control of the Senate between this time and March 4th 1899 while upon Ohio Marylandand a few other close States will depend the control after March 4th 1899 to the end of President McKinleys term Therefore all eyes are on Ohio as to her possible control of the Senate during the next eighteen months and upon Ohio Maryland and a few other close States as to the control of that body during the remainder of President McKinleys ter fliHappily the reports from all of these States arc very encouraging to the Republicans In Ohio there now remains no doubt of success provided the members of the party in that State do not allow their good prospects to lead to a neglect of duty They have some very shrewd men to deal with and some very unscrupulous ones too and between these two they will need to get out every vote But if they do so it is conceded that they will win In Maryland the Republicans are very hopeful They are all standing now well in line and when the good round majority by which they carried the State last year is remembered it is apparent that they have fcood chances of success Yet they have as shrewd and unscrupulous i man to fight as have the Ohioans for Arthur P Gorman is a man who can only be beaten by the must heroic work on the part of the Republicans of Maryland Advices from Ohio indicate that time voters there understand pretty clearly the heavy responsibility which rest upon them A failure to elect a Republican from that State passes the control of the ben ate into the hands of those opposed to President McKinley at least until March of 1899 perhaps to the end of his teim It is a big responsibility and it is well that the Ohio Republicans
