Fair is a of the great and universal system of Industrial exhibitions for which the United Srttes has be come so famous in recent years and which in its entirety includes the thousands of county and state fairs and the mammoth exhibits of manufactures and products made permanently or periodially in our principal cities These things have been since Elkninh Watson of Albany N Y succeeded in betting on foot the first American Fair in the year 1815 Let their glory nnd importance depart in no degree at thu Ilopkins County Fair which has been potent and may become of greater nnd increasing value to the agricultural stock raising mining and manufacturing interests of Hopkins nnd surround ing counties Thorn urn immediate financial interest to bo considered in that tilL people who come by thousands their Critics Gradstrcrts A preliminary injunction which has been the subject of much criti cism of the violent and irresponsi ble sort tliats been rendered familiar the last few years was granted by Judge Jackson of the Circuit Court of the United States for the district of West Virginia This injunction was granted upon the application of the Monougah Coal and Coke Company who desired to secure protection against unlawful inter ference with their property and employees For a few days before the text of the injunction was made public the agitator Debs against whom and his associates the injunction was granted spent much of his time in abusing the judge who made the restraining order and in denouncing in unmeasured terms the Order itself Me declared that the injunction restrained him from walking on any of the public high ways jeading to the mines of the Monongah Coal and Coke Compa ny that it was a most sweeping order that no other could be com pared to it that it annihilated the right of peaceable assemblage and effectually suppressed the right of free speech If it were sustained it would he said sweep away all constitutional safeguards and de liver people hound hand and foot to corporate capital These are sweeping statements but they represent the least heated features of the agitators remarks It was a wisccourscthat was fol lowed when the text of this injunction was given to the press so that people not informed about the mat ter hut who yet took some interest- in it and might be misled by the tirade of Debs might learn for themselves just what the scope of the injunction was The injunction was based upon a bill of com plaint alleging among other things that the defendant Debs and others named were conspiring together to interfere with the operating and conducting of the coal mines oper ated by the Monongah Coal and Coke Company and by such inter ference preventing thid employees of the company from mining and producing coal and that irrepara ble damage and loss might result unless a restraining order was granted Upon these allegations the judge granted a temporary injunction re straining the defendants and those associatedwith them from interfer ing with the management or operation of the mines in question by the owners thereof or those operating them either by menaces threats or any other kind of intimidation used to prevent the employees of the mines from going to or from the mines or from engaging in the business of mining therein The order further restrained the dc feudant from entering upon the property of the company for the purpose of interfering with the em ployees thereof either by intimida tion or the holding of public or private assemblages upon that property or in anywise molesting- or intimidating tIm employees Heels Coal Company at the Camp Meeting at Scbree last Sunday Col Albert Toombs and his aids make it quite interesting for those who come to Earlington for the purpose of interfering with those who want to perform daily labor in tho mines Such persons are properly eyed with suspicion and a cloy watch is kept on them ISix weeks or moro has the strike boon progress and no coal famine has uken place in Chicago or other large ci ties and while the price of said fuel has somewhat advanced a sufficient amount for present use is mined so it seems the strike was ill advised and ordered at time wrong lime The report put in circulation last week that about half of the miners in the JeHico regions had come out by the request of an agitator was untrue and misleading The fact is that since last May no mine work had been done there ITo aid in the shipment of coal a new telegraph office has been lately opened up at the Basket mines near Henderson The agitator met with a cold reception when last week be visited the Hecli mines Col Joe E Foard was in no humor to be trifled with anJ so gave the trouble maker notice to at once vacate Stories started to excite sympathy will have but little effect hero at Islington It would be far beler that the committee acknowledge their defeat and return to their homes As was stilled last week fair treatment would be accorded all who came here on a peaceful mission but thrcits uttered have caused a careful watch put over those making use of them and prove an injury to the cause of labor And now the operators of the Hopkins County coal mines have decided to give their miners one day free at the fair as a part reward for their faltblul service These kind acts are always remembered and appreciated by the miner who has a grateful heart and such
