mere figure head among nations Why should not the greatest Republic on the globe have something to say in the affairs of its distressed neighbors And moreover if our maritime power is to become of any consequence will it not be well to have a port or two under our control in mid oceantA PIECE of singular idiocy is that of the Greenville Jfanner editorially gloating over the assertion that President McKinley attended the Nashville Centennial but went in on a complimentary not even leav ing a pennys worth of prosperity If this editor had been in Nashville on that day and had seen the thousands of people of all politi cal parties that came in honor of Presidents Day and had heard the universal shouts and seen the magnificent ovation tendered Presi dent McKinley he could not but have been impressed with the ab sence of partisan spirit in the pco pie on that day with the great and magnanimous and patriotic utterances of thcdistinguishcdspeakcrs of the day with the grandeur and importance of the magnificent ex position which the President and his party honored and aided by and during their presenceand the silly little ebuhfion above quoted would never have come to light Perhaps he thinks the assem bled multitude got everything free and that their coming was an unmitigated misfortune and great financial loss to Nashville SOLOMON during his life tackled a great mnny vexatious and complicated questions which he dis posed of in a manner satisfactory to that as well as succeeding gen ratios the matrimonial question u i umy uuo tijion which he went estray But the people of this day are confronted with a question which would have driven Solomon to that Qxtrcmity known as the last trump had it occurred in his day and time The problem briefly stated is this In almost every community in Ken tucky can be found men who would resolve themselves into a mob and under the cover of darkness and in violation of the law upon the mere tfse lxiof unreliable parties would not hesitate to white cap or hang a man accused of crime Now it the accused party was apprehended and the same mob selected as jurors and the guilt of the accused established beyond all doubt by the undeniable evidence instead of mere hcresay that somebody of men who would illegally hang a man so readily upon bare report when justified by law and legal evidence would neither hang a man nor impose a long servitude in the penitentiary Now why is this Does a greater responsibility rest upon a juror than upon a member of a mob- CIIATTAO1GAWA1E1 What Toombs Thinks About It Toombs once Went History of the Oldest Church In Hopkins County CANE RUN CUUHCU NEAR ST CHARLES How the Pioneers Dressed for Church and the Part Cupid Played ST CHARLES Kv June 2- 3SpecialIt may be of inter est to the many readers of TilE DEE to that about two and a half miles northwest of this place is the site of the oldest house of worship within the lines of what is now Hopkins county It was established about the year 1818 and was known as the Cane Run Church taking the name from a small branch running near by which still bears the name of CAne Run It was located within a few yards of the present Cane Run Schoolhouse and was built of hewn logs with a stick and mud chimney in the east end The bUilding had one door but no windows and was occupied by the Iron Side Baptists who held services once a month The member ship was large and included peo vIe for many miles in every direc iorx About an acre of ground was set apart in the immediate vicinity of the church for the burial of the dead The under growth was removed but the large timber was left standing as a pro tection against the heat of summer and the cold blasts of winter Elders Timothy Sisk Earl Mc Mann and Ezell were some of the ministers who presented the gospel claims at these oldtime meetings which were held on Saturdays and Sundays of each month The services were nearly always well attended and looked forward to with great interest It was in fact the great meeting place for the people of this entire section of the country Young and old weak and strong would never forget the ap pointed day and would rarely fail to be in attendance Some would go in wagons others on horseback but a still larger number would walk In those days a young man was up to date if he possessed a suit of homemade jeans and fre quently went to church wearing a bran new pair of buckskin breech cs The young ladies often carried their shoes in their hands un til near the church when they would stop and complete their toilet They wore very fine homemade cotton dresses and were delighted to have a bright stripe of either blue or turkey red Our informer who has seen more than eighty summers had a merry twinkle in his eye and smiled when asked how the young- n ladies amt men enjoyed themselves at those longtimcagomcctings but refused to give us further in formation on that line But it is 1aftth2t CpM tlicit U tIC fore and since was not Idle during those large gatherings under the towering oaks and that many were the happy greetings and pleasant hours passed by the younger people under their shadowy branches in a devotion otherwise than that contemplated by either the pastor or older members The building has long since disappeared and nothing now remains save a mound formed by the fallen chimney to mark the exact spot upon which long years ago stood the first church in this section ot country The burying ground too has been badly neglected and it is only by a close examination that one can find the many graves which have for so many years held within their cold embrace those who were accustomed to worship at the old church It would be a noble and a meritorious work for some one to take up and have the grounds cleared off again the graves mounded up and the whole premises put under fence It is sad to see that neglected which years ago vas so sacred to those grand old mothers and fathers of this section of the country Wheat harvest is now in full blast and from reports from the various sections the crop will rather exceed expectation The stand is usually good and the grain is full developed life Wo are iti n world of tribulations of poraccutions of doubts perplexities mId of uncertain tics Under many conditions in life tho only thing possible tor us to do is to pa tiently wait tho will of God This grace of patience is very much needed in this day Its importance is underrated Too many methods of life tend to produce physical conditions that result in impatience and irritability of not no matter if his impatience is produced at by physical ailment it is detri mental to his religion Patience should be constantly anti carefully cultivated Some ways of cul tivating patience are mentioned by tho apostle 1 Patience may bo cultivated by re membering tho second coming of Christ Tho certainty of Christs second coming should assist us in being patient in enduring tho greatest hardships and dim rallies without murmur and complaint Why Because tho assurance of this fact proves that these things which tend to produco impatience and complaint will some time havo an end Wo con EverywhereI I Special correspondence Washington June 22 1897 No man in public life is nearer the American farmer today than Hon J H Brigham Assistant Secretary of Agriculture whose valuable service as Master of the National Grange has brought Him close touch with that great class citizens His views upon con ditions and prospects arc interest- Ing to all but especially so to that body of men and women to whose interests he has devoted so much time and thought Talking with your concsponden yesterday about the progress iifthi work being done by the Republi cans here he said JK The Administration has heen earnestly advocating the early passage of a measure that will correct the evil results of the Wilson low tariff freeravvmatcrial lawa measure which is expected to givc adequate protection to the agri cultural interests and w lha teii dency to remove the present exist ing depression There has L4cp less delay than in any previous legislation of the kind The wool growers and woolbuyers arc wait Jog with some impatience the passage oi the bill regulating the Du tics upon imported wool and woolens Wool is now ready for market and this suspense is very detrimental to both seller and buyer as they do not know just what rates of duty will be fixed The farmers are very earnest in de manding adequate protection on all farm commodities grown herein competition with similar prod ucts grown abroad and sometimes imported into this country and tIt Administration is fully committed to this policy of giving ample protection to agricultural products VVhat do you think about the revision of the tariff schedules in the Senate The new tariff bHl as it the House is believed to be morel ill the interests of agriculture the bill as amended in the Senate Committee Now that the meas tire is under discussion in the Sen ate there is good reason to believe that it will be properly amended before it becomes a law It is very cheering to note the breaking up of partisan lines on this question The old tariff forrevenuc only slogan so long relied upon by the leaders of one of the great political parties has largely lost its influence and the representa tWos of agricultural districts with out fear of the old time leaders do not hesitate to support measures calculated to give some portion of the protective system to tneir constituents I believe that no party which advocates free raw material and protected manufactured goods can ever again secure a strong following among tile agricultural classes II What do you say Mr Brig lam in regard to the delay in tje return of prosperity It is hardly fair to expect bcne i its from a protective system beJ fore the law has been enacted I People should not forget that we arc still living under the Wilson lowtanfffreerawmaterial meas ure and that at present the only advancement or improvement in conditions is the anticipation of the good effects of the new meas tire Progress on the bill is much greater than has been expected by those well informed and familiar with tariff legislation and the measure will undoubtedly soon be come a law and not by the votes of one party alone But the hue and cry against the delay in the coming of prosperity is not properly chargeable to the ignorance of the farmer and worktngman on this subject They are pretty well informed This cry comes principally from the cheap poli ticians who arc striving to make capital out of the matter There is no sense in asking for this promised prosperity before the pssaHel of a bill which will cut enormous importations ol foreign stuff and give the country u chance to right itself When the remedy is tried and fails it is time enough for people to say that we are mis taken and unable to bring pros perity What do you think of the prop osition for an export bounty on farm products which was rejected by the Senate There might he some tempo rary benefits but if it stimulated production the effect would be disastrous to the farmer What troubles the farmer now and makes low prices for his productions is thefact that he is now producing more than the market will readily absorb of certain commodities So long s he continues to dothis he must be content with low prices If this bounty should stimulate the production and increase the sur plus offered in the markets of the world it would have the effect Af decreasing the price received by the farmer rather than increasing it It is a departure from the policy of those who believe in protection The protectivepolicy advocates the encouragement of production in those lines where we are not producing enough to sup ply our own people but are de pendent to an extent on foreign countries for our supply This proposition does not have such a purpose It proposes simply to do nate to the farmer certain bounties on products exported and it is doubtful whether it would at the Imost have more than a temporary beneficial effect with a tendency I to bad reactionary results Chamberlains Cough Remedy the Deal nnd Most Popular We sell more of Chamberlains Cough Remedy than of all others combined write Messrs Kerr It Sons druggists of Mars Pa The sale of
