Cubans are in desperate straits Oppr ssion rapine and murder reign Spains policy has been one of starvation treach cry and annihilation The season of rains and fevers is upon Cuba now and the is deeply inter ested to see the end of this murderous war- Surface and Underground Farmers There are two kinds of farmers each as necessary to the welfare of the human race as the other The one tills the earths surface and brings forth grains fruits and vegetation that man and beast may live The other as truly farms the interior of Earth and is as impor tant an agent in the worlds progress and development The one braves the heat of the noonday sun the winters cold and storm that man rifay have whereof to cat The other braves the dangers of earths deep dark caverns where it is ever night and seeks out coal a nd metals and all the hidden wealth and treasure of Earth toiling as the prosper Are they not near akin and brothers the one toiling on the surface the other in the bowels of the our people have for years been and are nov so well provided The com mercial coal mines of Hopkins county produced nearly onefourth of the entire output of coal for the State The value of the coal alone that was shipped by rail from these mines was over a half million dollars Tobacco which is the chief crop of our agriculturalists was only a half crop last year and of inferior grade but its value to the county was more than one hnndred thous and dollars To this are to be added corn and other grains fruits vegetables stock etc Our peo pIe have not suffered greatly even in the trying times that arc past and their prospects are brightening The outlook for all crops is fairly bright With the miners the ma jority of them have received the same rate of wages that has been in effect for years and in some in stances where reductions were made for a time the old rate now prevails Good times are before us if we will only help to make them so all but the political demagogue and calamity would bo with him and toll him what to say Let us note 1 Tho kind of a tongue that should be n Christians tool It should bo n consecrated tongue ona so unreservedly consecrated to God that when it spoke God spoke It is not a question of elo quenco or of slowness of speech Tho eloquent tongue and tho stammering touguo may both be used for God if they are only thoroughly consecrated to Him Many comforting and consoling the unfortu unto and afflicted in tho name of Jesus Christ 8 Tho time for using tho tongue as a Christians tool It should bo Gods time Moses was to speak when God di reeted extra session of the legislature of Kentucky causes a feeling of thankfulness to take possession of the minds of her citizens The Republicans can count as a gain the election of a Us S Senator the enactment of needed finan ci legislation the convictmined coal bill and those authorizing improvements in the sewage system of the asylums But the failure ot the House to pass a good bill to suppress mob violence and the smallness of the vote by which it passed the Senate substitute for the mild creation of the lower chamber does not reflect credit on the party The sound money members of the Senate did not attempt to get together and work in harmony until too late to accomplish anything If at the beginning of the they had reorganized elected new officers and made new rules they would have been in a position to place the General Assembly on a busi ness basis and carry out the needed legislation in thirty days and ad journ This would have given the State the necessary relief and saved thirty thousand dollars In stead of that they trusted to the sense of justice and love of fair play oi the free silver minority who toyed with them till their hands were tied and then proceeded to appear in their true character Whether this exhibition of duo plicity reckless extravagance and malignance will at last convince the National Democrats that the Popocratic leaders arc so Popu hstic as to be only Democratic in name is a question But for their revolutionary ac actions at the regular session a Senator would they have been elected and the same financial bills enacted as have now become laws The silverites are responsible for the disgraceful and unseemly scenes witnessed both at last session and this and for the extra expense to which the State has been putThere were many conservative members of all parties who de sired to hasten business and cur tail expenses by an early adjourn ment But the majorttywere in favor of to the full extent of the law The Frank lin county grand jury after a recent examination of condition of the penitentiary declared that it seemed as if that institution was the only place that had been struck by the wave of prosperity The legisla tive halls contained many who could testify to the fact that since the fourth of March they had been doing much better and were experiencing the promised change The member from Hopkins was not a conspicuous figure Hid constituents were not clamoring for local legislation He was not forever leading some filibustering movement to prevent action on a bill to kill time and stay longer But always understood the meas ures he was voting upon and was usually in his place attending to in an intelligent unassum ing manner that won the respect of all If there had been more like him there would have been less time wasted on demagogue speeches and less money squandered on a long drawn out session If his constituents of all parties are wise they will continuehim in his present position and avail themselves of the experience he The Woman Friend I know from my own experience that or ladies of a constipated habit there a nothing to supply the place of German Liver Powder Mrs J P Mencness
