esteem by thousands of Kentuckians who know her is to wed Mr Wm Cromwell Chief Cleric of the Sen ate The question has arisen as to whether her change of name will prevent her continuing in office If Miss Guy desires to complete her term as librarian THE BEE trusts that nothing may be interposed to prevent TilE bulldozing tactics of Mr Bronston Mr Goebel and others in the State Senate has aroused the just indignation of citizens throughout Kentucky irrespective of party affiliation The Courier Journal gives vent to the following denunciation It would be an admirable idea to have Mr Bronston recognized as the Senate of Kenlucky when be is feeling particularly at himself say at such times as that one when he was exclaiming In tones of stirring eloquence Throw theol aover Ih- ebanlslcrslIIj the honest conscientious manner that characterizes the life of the man and retains what he has ever heldthe regard and esteem of good citizens irrespective of party Democrats as well as Republi cans appreciate his good qualities and do not hesitate to say so The following expression is from the HustlerHe not at home a single time during the session of the Legislature While Mr Graham is a Republican yet he has the goodwill of nearly everybody who knows him We all know that Rufe is an honest sober moral and upright man something that cannot be said of all tho members of that body Mr Graham has made a very fair nnd worthy representative Dr KImbley Dr J F Kimbley died suddenly at his home in Owcnsboro Mon day night He was called to see a patient about midnight and when almost dressed fell and died without speaking He has been a strong man all his life He was born in Muhlenberg county Ser tember 24 1823 Served in the Union Army through the civil war was appointed surgeon of the Eleventh Kentucky infantry in 1861 and held staff brigade division and corps positions in the 1armiesand Tennessee He was one of the most prominent and wealthy citizens of Daviess county and leaves an estate of over 100000 Blackmail The BlackJa7 has maligned Mr Geo C Atkinson That is its mission He is falsely accused of trying to serve on the grand jury from wrong motives and ot being detected in the wilful attempt to force himself in while it is assert ed he was knowingly incompetent as a juror Squire Jim Head is credited with having made the detection and the matter is made the basis of a villianous villifying and malicious attack upon Mr Atkinson in the editorial columns ofthcMail A conversation is also invented as between Mr At kinspn and Squire Head in which Mr Atkinson is quoted as giving utterance to threatening an intimi dating speech Squire Head has denied the truth of this story to several Earl ington gentlemen and has said that he would publicly and in the same manner as the injustice was done set Mr Atkinson right before Urns who might have believed it Tir BEE has waited for Mr Head to speak and sight this wrong but thus far whether for reasons of his own or because the BlackaV will not recall this slander he has remained silent TilE BEE now States that the charge published is false as the father of lies and Judge Pratt and Sheriff Thompson will bear out the statement Mr Atkinson was scrupulously particular to State everything he thought might possibly conflict with his services on tb grand jury and Mr Atkinson ant not another was careful to stat that he was a notary public which office disqualified him as a juror The BlackMail has maligned Mr D W Umstead That is its mission and blackmailing and und maligning have their weight with not a few timorous ones But 1 i Mr Umstead is one of those straightforward men always ready to do his duty fearlessly and never flinching from its performance- Mr Umstead wits foreman of the grand jury which the Mail with aid from certain office seekers has again tried to control and not be ing an officeseeker but being anI honest man took the stand upon he Hendricks case that has ever een taken by reasonable and un- preJudiced men simply that there was not evidence to indict He is maligned for thili as have been all other jurors who have acted upon his case without fear or favor Not satisfied with this the Black follows him with its persecu ioi and publishes a lying statement charging Umstead with attempting to injure Dr E P Rucker whom it says is one of the best qualified physicians in the State The BlackMail says Mr Urn tead went on a tour of investiga ion all by himself and that he asked County Clerk Arnold what right has Dr Rucker got to practice medicine Mr Arnold is reported in quotation to have sat upon Mr Umstead with some spiri t and to have told him how diplomas Dr Kuckcr had etc etc Then it says Mr Umstead went upstairs chewing the cud of over zealousness etc very much dis comfitedThis too is a malicious fabrication and while the stories of the Mailare generally recognized by intelligent people as naturally lying and inherently vicious concoc tions of a diseased mind whose emissions arc tolerated for a while by a long suffering public yet TIlE BEE as a public servant cannot allow such inventions of the imagination against good citizens to go- by uncontradictediTHE BEE interviewed County Clerk Arnold thus Mr Arnold I just want to ask you one question Well ask me a dozen What is there in this story about Dan Umstead while fore man of theigrand juryinvestigating in your office the standing of Dr RuckerWhy said Mr Arnold thats all bosh and he continued Ill tell you just what occurred The law requires physicians to register and requires the County Clerk to furnish a list to the grand jury of those who have registered I made out such a list as usual took it to the grand jury room and returned to my office Presently I returned to the jury room to take the name of another physiciah who had reg istered When I gave it in some pleasantries passed and Foreman Umsteadsaidjocularly Mr Clerk you had better go out to Earling ton and have Bro Rucker regis ter Why I responded isnt Bro Ruckers name on the list It should be Some one I think it was Mr Barnhill answered no Mr Umstead said if the name is on the list the clerk failed to read it I then said give me the list and I will show it to you I took the list found Dr Ruckers name put it up under Mr Barn hills nose and asked him if he could read This was all that passed between Mr Umstead and myself He did not come to me to investigate Dr Rucker but on the other hand Ruckers name not having been read he seemed tome to be interested that Rucker should be given another opportunity to register as the law re quiresThus this lie out of whole cloth is refuted by the unfailing truth from the most reliable quarter The BlackMail has maligned Mr Jno T Barnett that efficient fearless bighearted officer well known throughout Western Kentucky who has done so much to make Earlington a terror to evildoers for miles around Ife i 5 ever alert and ready to the performance of duty and never hesi tates in service to a friend As can be proven he has great compassion for suffering humanity and scarcely a week passes but he advances money to relieve the ne c ssity and help the journey merits of the Pneumatic or Wind stacker We believe the farmers of Johnson County situated as they arc in one of the best agricultural regions in the world arc to be felicitated for their excellent judgement in adopting improved methods in farming without being governed by prejudice or hearsay To the farmers of Johnson County who have been familiar with the Wind stacker since its introduction in 1891 discussions at this time concerning the merits of the Wind stacker must be amusing When they have straw stacks that have stood for three four and five years with the straw bright and clean a few inches below the surface they certainly cannot help wondering why the Wind stacker could any where be condemned because the straw would not keep The geographical position of the County the whole of which lies within forty miles of the capital City of the State makes it readily acc ssibf to the agents of all the agricultural implement manufacturers For that reason this County is particu larly favored in having the first opportunity to receive and judge of new inventions We suppose the contests by agents for sales machinery arc as keen here as they could possibly be anywhere If therefore there should be any weaknesses or defects in a machine the agents of competing machinery would be swift to discover them and point them out to buyers The fact is that a threshcrman in this County today without a wjni stacker has very little to do and none of them thinks of buying a new machine without it Farmers will no longer endure the disagree able and arduous labor required in stacking straw nor can they se cure hands in a busy season to do such work The manufacturer of a threshing machine in this day which is not adapted o work in connection with the Vind stacker has no sale for his goods in this County and we are surprised that farmers or threshermcn in any lo cality would think of using old time methods or machinery not adapted for the best use of pro gressive improvements fixed up for the last years slate Who carried carried around as youd believe a couple of counties in his sleeve And where is the scribe with a vaulting will who tried a long felt want to fill and courted shekels and renown with a minion paper jn a bourgeois town The lad had divided the world up fair and owns but his own six billionth share the sweet girl graduate a grand surprise and conquers the world with well made pies the candidate with the deathless gallIS fixing him self for another fall while the journalist with the haughty crest has gone the way of the last years nest So year by year and day by day the world rolls on in the same old way the balloon that is biggest round about is the flabbiest rag when the gas is out- Raising Honey The other day a number of ladies determined to earn a dollar each for the church to which they belonged and when the collection was made they met together and told how they had earned the money One shaved her husband another got five cents perfect liberty in the shops and grounds as well as acting as an introducer Mr Young duvotcd some minutes to explaining to me the use and action of this or that piece of machinery and told me several things of interest I strolled through the machine shop blacksmith shop car shop met the watchman and made my peace peace with him then found the beautiful little greenhouse and Mr Wiley time keeper and Paul Hal brooks the young florist who with the assistance of Mr Wiley makes the grounds about these smoky shops to bloom as the rose Here there were thousands of coleus nasturtiums gcrancums and other plants for beds borders and lettering some raised from slips and many from seeds everything in the best order and many vacancies showing where the plants came from that were already out This greenhouse and the outside are used to their full capacity and every inch of space utilized Mr Wiley was trying to shake a chill that threatened him but imme diately and against protestations took me under his charge and showed me about The grounds are beginning to promise great beauty as the sum mer advances One beautiful bed containing more than a thousand plants is in the shape of a maltese cross Other groupings of plants have been made and yet other beds Df future loveliness are just begun or just being projected The The grass plots which have suffered such unfavorable winter weather show promise now of fair growth The sail boats M H Smith J G Metcalfe andliP Leeds sail gracefully intheir track about the fountain and ca reen to the breeze as if guided by an unseen hand The contrivance- is ingenious and the boats moye ever before the wind but do not collideThe band has made its debut and all are much pleased with it- It contains some very fine talent and the instrumentation is consid ered excellent When the boys get their uniforms and go to Nashville they will cut a wide swath Among things to be proud of arethehome made air compressor which starts and stops automatically and keeps a large and constant supply of air at 8j pounds pressure This compressed air is jsed for various purposes among whIch are the lifts which handle heavy loads that formerly required he time and labor of numerous men There is the air motor de signed by Mr E J Youngs son who has charge of the air brake department and the gasoline heater for taking off locomotive wheel ires in a few hours where formerly llays were required In the r 7P Howell shops now they do not drill bolts out of iron work or machinery that is being dismembered but they have a sort ofa cannon which they load with gunpowder and they blow the bolts out in Ii- jiffy Everything here indicates thrift and contentment The men are proud of thin shops the grounds the band and Old Gloryand they look to he some as I tbo birthday of the railway locomotive occurred pn September 27 1825 with Stephenson- as the father of the event The Stockton and Darlington railway had been built and through his persistent importunities laid wltb iron instead of wooden rails It bad been intended merely for horse draft but the Inventor prevailed upon the owners lo allow him a trial of his steam locomotive Stephenson himself was the driver on that occasion and before a tremendous crowd of curious and for the most part in credulous people be drew a train of nearly thirty wagons loaded with passengers andI coal at a speed of twelve to fifteen miles per hour Thus the first train that ever carried passengers made Its journey in safety and the entbtliiasm of the multi tude was Indescribable nut notwithstanding thin demonstration the locomotive was still unmercifully ridi cpled by tbe majority Nor was Ibis rid culq confined to the ignorant classes Tin ablest engineers contended that it was ridiculous to suppose that steam could ever be practically employed In competition lib horse for transportation Al Most incredible as it may now seem it Is a fact that political economists Inveighed against time railway and the engine as constituting an imaginary reform which oven If successful which was very doubf1It would deprive stage drivers teamsters dnfl nnkeepers of their livelihood It was in the fat of an almost universal opposition of the wild unreasonable kind that a fpw ittou led by the great Stephenson labored itdily onward and finally established the railroad and the locomotive as instiiu lions gf
