of competition With free skilled labor r Men who work the roads according to tile old fashioned methoJ in this section do it usually not to make the good but to gt rid of the job andavoida fine The Frankfort Cipital has this to say on this vital subject It is apparent the only solution of the problem is in the abolition of all employment of convicts In competition with free labor Tbe prisoners can be employed t making clothing and shoes for Them selves in cultivating farm products for the maintenance of themselves and in making public roads allover the State If this were done the State vould probably Incur no more expense tban is now incurred in the attempt to take the bread out of the mouths of honest mechanics by making at a loss minufaclureJ articles and selling them In competition with free labor pro ducts If every convict wero maintained in idleness it would only cost the State fJjo 000 a year whicl would represent a tdx of cents on each JOO of flxnblo properly Out in making good rods the State would reap a benefit vastly more than even this outlay wbich would not be really necessary However it is certain that the convict competition has got to go and the politicians have got to declare for honest labor ANCIENT BURIAL PLACE The Bees Correspondent Visits an Ancient B rlnl Place LOCATED NEAR FUANKFOKT KENTUCKY Where Lie the Remains ol Daniel lioone Ills Wife and Other Noted Ken l cky Pssplt Special correspondence to TIIB BBB Frankfort Ky MaY20The ancient burial place of the people- of this vicinity was situated justa short distance off of the Owen pike and about one and a half miles north of the city Along in the thirties Mason BrOwn Esq one of Frankfortspromment and enterprising citizens conceived the project of organizing a cemetery company The scheme was popular and the associated capitalists obtained possession of a bluff ly ing to the eastward of this city across the Kentucky river On its top was spread out a tract Of rolling tableland and their purchase now embraces over seventy acr s On the river boundarythe precipi tous cliffs rise to the height of three hundred feet above the flowing stream The undulating surface of this naturally beautiful plateau studded with grand old oaks elms and other native forest trees has been skillfully taken advantage of by the landscape gardeners and engineers and it compares very favorably with other notednecro poli But it is not so much for the picturesque scenery in and surrounding it that it is noticable as for the tombs of the historic dead that it contains At the crest of the precipice fronting on the middle of the loop of the river which circles South Frankfort stands the monu ment marking the graves of Daniel Boone and Rebecca Bryan his wife Their bodies weie brought from Warren County Missouri pursuant to an net of the legisla te of Kentucky passed during the session of 18445 appropriat ng funds and appointing a commission for that purpose The consent of the surviving relatives laving been obtained the removal was made and on September 13 1845 twentyfive years after Bpones death the cerembnies at tending the rtintermenttook place Hon John J Crittenden delivered the oration and Col Richard M Johnson was one of the pall bearers It was not until 1860 that any monument was ejected to mark their last resting place al- thouGh several efforts had been that direction Abill was passed in the legisla incorporate the- BoonCtfonument Association and In 1850 a bmw s introduced mak ing an appropriation for a suitable monument On March 2 1860 the bill was passed authorizing the Governor to erect a durable monument and draw upon the Treasury for an amount not to exceed two thousand dollars in addition to the amount raised by private subsip tionlt seems to have been finished during that year but ho record tan be found either in the Journals of the legislature or in the newspaper files of that time con cerning it It consists of a brown stone shaft about twenty feet in height On each of the four sides and at the distance of about eight eet from the base of the column a recess was cqt in the stone nearly two feet square and three inches deep on the surface of which was carved in bass relief first a scene representing the hunter alone in ront of his log cabin next one depicting a hand to hand encounter betWeen the pioneer and an Indian warrior on the third was shown Kebecca at the cabin door en aged in milking the cow and theY contains a sketch of Boone and a youth standing nea the door of a cabin But the significance is not apparent from the attitude of the figures or their sur roundings Some say it shows Boone telling his colored boy and sole attendant where he wished to be buried But as his wire was buriednear there that seems im probable Others that Boone is freeing his slave boy but an oral- ismissal would not have accom ushed the object All memor nda connected with the design to have been lost The past tense is advisedly and orrectly used in describing the sculptors figures for the hapd of spoilor has been here and the relithuntinJfiends 0= barbarous that but little is left of the work of the artist by the chisles of the thieving visitors who seem to have had no fear of the penitentiary whose walls on the opposite shore were constructed to receive and confine and now re strain criminals ofa Jess degree The dilapidated condition of the monument excites feelings of anger and disgust at the lack of venera tion decency and honesty displayed by the heartless scoundrels who mutilated it and a desire that steps should be taken to replace it with a duplicate structure of more durable and resisting material A very small amount subscribed by those who have been thrilled At the recital of the exploits of the sturdy and brave pioneer and his confreres whose struggles with the abonginees during the settlement of the western wilds caused Kentucky to be called the dark and bloody ground would soon raise the necessary sum It is onlyrequisite that the proper par ties should inaugurate the move ment and it would seem that the Colonial Daughters of Kentucky should announce their consent to become custodians of a fund for the purpose after ascertaining how much would be needed Pennsylvania claims him as her son North Carolina once recognized him as a citizen Kentucky regards him as one of its founders Missovri with in jvhose boundaries he last re sided gave up reluctantly her right to retain possession of the remains of her distinguished dead And throughout the nation arc privilege oring the memory of one of our typical American pioneers who blazed the path toward the Westward oer which the star of empire wayAnother is that erected to the memory of I Col Richard M Johnson who is credited by the historians with having killed the Indian chief Tecumseh at the battle of the Thames The battle monument to the heroic sons of Kentucky who were killed in the Mexican and recent Indian wars occupies the centre of a circular plot about one hundred and fifty feet in diameter The shaft is about sixty feet high and contains the names of various battlefields and officers who perished there and numerous tombstones to the memory of other officers and soldiers occupy the surrounding space Here also rest all that is mortal of Governors Greenup Scott Madison Adair Letcher Crittenden C S Morehead and Blackburn and a host of eminent citizens who have made an enviable record in various walks of life An interesting feature to the visitor who is scientifically inclined is the JamesFrancisin 1834 who died at Columbus Miss in 1862 On one side is the above inscription on another called home by the Grand Chief of Operators to work the eternal circuit above on another His comrades the old time telegraphers have caused his remains to be brought back to his Old Ken tucky Home and erected this monument to his memory Ablaze with genius and aflame with zeal He caught the spirit of electric force interpretedTbe Perhaps the most unique monu ment is that of a Mrs Connery which is cut from solid grey mar ble to represent a cross formed of an oak tree sawed off above branches projecting at right an gles which are cut off a short dis tance fromthe trunk the carving of the bark and clinging ivy must have taken a long time anda care ful and delicate touch It stands eight feet high and the trunk is twelve and the branches ten inches in diameter It would be difficult to find aIlcity of the dead 01 similar size wliere arc grouped a greater number of historic characters Over to the ruileloomsis situated the remains of Fort Hill Its face from this point of view looks almost inaccessible To the north and south rise other high cliffs at whose base the circuitous river glide and upon the circular sunken plain three hundred feet below their summits is built the city of Frankfort These two cities ill such close proximity so aptly illustrates Rose Terry Cooks poemliThe Two Villages that it would seem as though a visit to them must have inspired her muse Although in this same connection attention has heretofore1 been called singularfitnesscality any allusion to the scenic features contiguity and environ I ment of the two seems to call for its reproduction- Over the river on the hill Lieth a village white and still All around It the forest either for or against the petition filed some time ago by Mr Burley Nail to have a large ditch opened from his farm through the flat to Crab Orchard Creek a distance of two and onethird miles Better Drainage f The commissioners were appointed at the last term of the County Court and have performed their work and reported in favor of the proposed ditch and estimate tljb to tat cost at about 803 The report also estimated the size of the ditch necessary to carry off the water and drain the land sufficiently at sixteen feet wide aril four feet deep Some opposition kmanifested but it is thought the report will be received and the ditch opened This certainly is a move in the right direction and now let some one take tOe initiative and make the move to have Slaver Flat drained From the Scatters to where Slaver empties into Crab Orchard a distance of about four and one half miles there is no channel and the water spreads all over the bottom covering some four or five thousand acres ot the best land Webster county affords that is now almost worthless With a ditch suffi clent to drain said land this could all be made tillable laud besides It would be conducive to the health of tbe break out between tho hordmen of Abram and Lot than Abram went to Lot and expressed a desire for peace Tho strife had not oven as yet extended to themselves but Abram know that it soon would do so and by vigorous timely action ho warded off tho danger Tho time to seek peace is at tho approach of strife or in its early beginnings Many a strife and contention in homo church state or among friends might havo been peaceably settled if an effort had been made in tho early days of its history but it is allowed to continue from time to time until neither of tho contending parties is willing to commentary on Matthew oat chap and 20verse for the instruction of those who condemn the idea and for the benefit of all believers who do not have access to helps and notes on the scriptures Mr Whedon says It is part of the impurity of our depraved nature that the subject of our dwn origin by birth should suggest other Ihae pure thoughts lInt the divine law bath established tht through all nature a new life should be produced only from the method of doutle parentage When therefore from a single human parent a new human person takes origin a miracle of surpassing power over and above nature is performed it may be truly believed to take place only of the Holy Ghost This phrase is Dot to be so understood as to inter that the Holy Ghost is the father of our Lord Jesus Christ In Luke the angel declares to Mary The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee therefore that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God Dy this we are toun derstand simply that divine power was im parted to the human perioD of the Virgin from which a being of perfect holiness should be concieved and born blending the divine andtbo human natures From this whole matter all but the truly im pious and profane will banish every impure and gross thought Even In the most minute conceptions that our tnindsin their train of meditation may be called upon to frame our reverence will compel us to think of this one holy conception and birth with a purity and an awe suitable to the real sacredness and grandeur of so super natural a fact and beingII
