multitude of the sins of that august body in the minds of the thousands of coal miners in the State No bill has received more prompt attention a been put through with less deia than this one which means so much to the free laborer in Kentucky coal mines Nothing is more certain than that the cost of production regulates the selling price where there is competion And competition is nowhere sharper than in the coal trade Hence it follows that coal mined or coke manufactured bj convict labor can and will be of fered on the markets at prices that would bring ruin to operators and starvation to miners whose product must compete with that of convict laborThe theoretical cost of sustain ing convicts in Tennessee coal- mines is about 20 cents per day although the actual cost is probably somewhat greater Compare this with the wages paid the coal miner and mine laborer of Kentucky and it will be seen how great the free labor of this State would suffer in open competition with killed Officer James Green at De Kovtn on Wedneshay April i4th Both men are well known here and the following are as accurate descriptions of each as can be had Hlte Gus Hite alias Babe Hite as he is known in Tennessee and North Carolina alias Hall alias Red IIorseby the latter appellation he was familiarly known hereis about 5 feet 8 inches tall 28 or 30 years old heavy build broad shouldered and muscular weighing probably 165 pounds He has red hair sandy mustache large eyes Always goes heavily armed usually carrying a Winchester in addition to his revolvers A dangerous man Cody Wes Cody home a mile north west of Earlington cousin to Gus Rite 5 feet 6 inches tall 45 years heavy build very dark com plexion very black and eyes short stubby moustache does not weu other beard ordinarily Is a coal miner and bears the marks of a miner on his face and hands Gus Hite is a cousin to Frank and Jesse James and is proud of it No matter how distant the re lationship it has ever been his ambition to follow in the footsteps of those freebooters He is now well on the way to greater notoriety or the gallows as the following story indicateWednesday at DeKoven Ky1 a tragedy was enacted and a brave man and fearless officer was killed The dead man is James Green who was acting as deputy with Constable William Beser An other man George Guess was at first reported fatally wounded but was only shot in the arm The story as told by dispatches from the scene of action is about as follows Wes Cody and Gus Hite who were suspected of having robbed the postoffice at DeKoven some weeks ago were arrested by the officers mentioned on the evening 1ofwere being taken to DeKoven when they broke away from their custodians and fled to the woods The officers it seems did not use nals but tollowed Itfld1ntI1lthy Hite and Cody gained refuge in a cabin where they had secreted a Winchester rifle and when the officers came within 50 yards they opened fire killing Green throughhisbreast Later they shot George Guess through the arm A line of guards were put about the patch of woods the intention being to lay seige until the men were captured but the story goes that some of the guards got hungry and went to the depot for lunch as early as 8 oclockand through lack of care the desperadoes made good their escape Bodies of armed men scoured the country and it was thought the murderers could not escape The dispatches said fur capturedthereSome of the work of Hite is Earlington I July 2 1894 he held up and robbed a book agent by the name of A C Rowe of Livermore Ky near the old Fleming mine one mile north of Earlington Rowe had exhibited some money while in Hecla where he went to get some change in making collections Shortly afterward he was confronted by a man wearing a mask who presented a pistol and demanded his bygivingwhich he had but Hite wouldnt accept that payment and while he pressed the pistol against Rowes head thrust a hand into his pocket t nd took his purse and is known as Babe Hite and where an unsuccessful effort was made to capture him June Green Deputy Green who was killed at DeKoven was a nervy man He is remembered by Mr J T Dcnton of this place for assistance rendered him at Clay Webster county some fifteen years ago when Denton was marshal of that town A party of toughs from a bad neighborhood were in the habit of warning the officer of Clay on the night they desired to paint things red and the streets would be given over to them to do as they pleased ShOrtly sifter Denton was made marshal these fellows came in one evening and told him that was their night and hat the place for him was at home He replied that he would see that the peace was kept and perform his duty After the night got very dark the toughs began shooting and Denton with Green to aid him returned their fire with telling effect They could only shoot where they saw the flash oi a revolver but several of their bullets took effect and the M visitors didnt take the town gentlemen who own and operate the Monarch mines A few minutes before 4 oclock last Friday afternoon the distress whistle at the Monarch tomes attracted the attention of the people In Eirlington Madisonville and the surrounding countryand the telephone quickly told the story of a dreadful accident Almost immediately the highways I were thronged with people on foot on bi 1 cries In delivery wagons horseback and every other way all hastening toward the I scene of the accident Upon arriving there it was found that a terrific explosion had occurred about 320 oclock whoso force was so great as 16 lilt one of the heavy Iron cages several feet in the male shaft demolishing 4the building over the air shaft and the large fan and engine therein This in itself ibpdgji serious was of minor Importance as corn pared with the lou of life below which must certainly follow It was very soon ascertained that but three men were in the mine vis Foreman Jabez Tratben and the two shooters If Robert Carlton and Theo Stone Fortunately Trathem happened to be at work on a pump at the bottom of Ibe main ibaf and although knocked senseless by the force of the explosion be recovered made his way to the air shaft and by means of the safety Udders therein escaped with his life He was the first however to re turn to the dpIBS below Jotry to rescue his comrades Mr Thomas Howard of Madisonville went down with him In a short time and as soon as they could get there the St Bernard people beaded by Mr John O Atkinson began lo arrive upon the scene fully equipped with whatever appliances thought they might be needed and everything was done that could be done to reach the unfortunate men The first thing to do was to restore the circulation of air In the mines and rid it as quickly as possible of the noctious gases To this end large fires were built In baskets on the iron cages which were quickly lowered in the main shaft This furnished an excellent current of fresh air through the works for the short distance between the air shaft and hoisting shaft and made the work exploration possible The labor now began and continued without cessation nntil the stark bodies of the two unfortunate men were carried away frqm the shafts mouth to their sor rowful homes at 1130 that night The names of all nho rendered assist ance could not of course be bad but those who did the most efficient work Were the members of the exploring party which did not relax its efforts for one moment nn til the work was finished and all possible doubt settled These are the explorers sixteen in all eight of them
