It requires but an instant to observe that the character Wffift of a State organization has been overwhelmed by the international spirit that pervades the whole. It is an achievement of which the nation may well be proud, and yet it is the work of the people of Nashville alone, and it can be unhesitatingly asserted that never before in the world's history has any city the size of the capital of Tennessee brought so gigantic a scheme to so successful an issue. A Michigan editor said recently, after a day on the grounds: "What can I do for you people? I want to do something. This is the grandest thing the South has ever seen, and it even surpasses the World's Fair in many ways." Foreman Thomas Robinson, of tho Umpire mines was here on a visit to relatives last Saturday and Sunday, and reports raachfnery in the new mine working fine. Two machines are at work, the motive power being electricity. Rumor says that the Monarch Coal Company will soon put In electric mining machinery at their mines. The miners in this county naturally feel like tbey could trust Ben T. Robinson in the Legislature, because he was formerly ono of tbeir number, and he can rest assured they will give him a good vote. Fcr tho next three or four months, there will be many days that miners can call their own, and which they can spend in fishing, playing baseball and other sports. Fortunately the weather has not been very cold or else the suffering among the victims of the high waters in the South and West would have been great for lack of coal and other fuel. Some of our leading coal operators take the view that reducing the price of mining is not the best way to make the production of coal a profitable business. A strange story comes from Webster City, Iowa, which says that at the depth of 130 feet in the Lehigh coal mine a puzzling piece of rock has been discovered upon the surface of which appear pictures. The stone is of dark gray color and about 2 feet long, x foot wide and 4 inches thick. Over the hard surface lines are drawn at angles forming perfect diamonds. In the center ot each diamond is a fairly good face of an old man each with a peculiar indentation in the forehead. This sounds a good deal like the petrified bark of an ancient tree which is found in coal measures. The Hecla Coal Co. discontinued the use of eltctricity last week for mining purposes, and now have their mining done by le ATKINSON DIVISION. U. R. K. P. srnmmmm.mttmm S E. T. HALSEY, President. W.
