himself were treated with more or less respect But as if to make up for their readiness to believe in GorgoHs and Hydras and Chimacr as dire when at a distance other generations were singularly dis trustful of most things near at hand They displayed to a singular extent the wonderful sceptism that in all things directly touching the perI son generally accompanies ignor ance The state of mind was very much that of the honest farmer InI the city who was in constant fearI of being buncoed I The Credulity or KnowltdjtcI Ignorance doubts itself and consequently everybody andevery thing else It is only complete knowledge that is more nearly credulous and advance toward it has been shown as much by what men arc willing to believe and the readiness with which they believe it as by anything else When thej marvels of the Roentgen rays were announced the attention of the world was brought up with a round turn by a discovery almost dramatic in its suddenness and surprise Such sharp demands arc becoming more and more frequent but if there is anything more wonderful than the amazing nature of such inventions it is the way in which they arc received Never before perhaps in the history of the world did news of such startling novelty receive such instant and implicit belief and never before would such confidence have been possible i The records of science arc covered with accounts of the misfortunes of innovators and it is not necessary to go back to the time when admittedly the best way to deal with an inventor was to roast him for it is not sOverylong since by contumely 8 nand ostracism his lot was ofniad hard enough to serve for any illustration But whereas it once seemed as if every invention was taken as as an affront to their intelligence by men at large nowadays every one seems to take a personal pride in every advance and unconsciously we are in the habit of considering ourselves rather clever fellows to have managed to belong to such a generation We arc anxious to give proof of our perspi cacUyjust as anxious as as men always have beenonlyour way is different We try rathcr to prove this by the amount that we arc willing to believe while others ap parently sought to display it by doubt and denial If we are living in the penumbra of many beliefs we have clearly passed out of a greater darkness and can at least see more clearly and as wo have heard since childhood seeing is believing From The Point ofI View in April Scribners Maga zinc wwStill happy littrot heJ little while ago a man tkVERY you to become his asked you for your love your trust and your fifteen years ago an tAmerican manofwar cruis ing in the Persian Gulf came to anchor off the Arabian City of Muscat In accordance with International custom a salute of twentyone guns was Tired with the red flag of Arabia at the main After waiting for more than an hour our flag was seen to flutter at the staff of the fort situated at the Eastern entrance and the sal ute was returned gun for gun but with the American flag floated union dawn Such an affront could not past unnoticed A lieutenant with an aide was immediately de spatched to the palace to demand of the Sultan that the flag should be hoisted properly and another salute fired The Sultan upon learning the details expressed the deepest regret promptly ordered the salute to be properly made and declared that the officer should be bastinadoed as a salve to our wounded dignity but explained that the officer probably never having seen the flag did not know how it should be hoisted The flag used was borrowed from the English consul Could such an unintentional affront happen to the English flag outside of thciicc barriers of the Arctic or Anarctic Ocean Probably not and for the reasona that the flag of England by her immcnsc commercial superiority is known in every corner of the the world Beneath the trailing plumes from the smoke of her own Cardiff coal flutters tnc cross ol St George from tho peaks of thousands of steamers on every sea guarded today by the most powerful navy the world has ever known This maritime superiority demands mercantile houses in every land and British merchants whose rights are carefully maintained by trained diplomats have crowded out competitors and placed the products of British in dustry foremost in the markets of the world filling to overflowing the coffers of the island empire Ever watchful of her trade interests her legislators have framed laws that render English Inufacturers absolutely certain of their ability to place their goods advantageously in any foreign market It was a great English company carefully fostered by the parent government tnat gave in return an empire to offset the loss of her western colonies the highways to which em pire through the Mediterranean or around Good Hope are as carefully guarded and patrolled as arc her own public highways at home The monetary value of such a policy is incalculable and is an objectles son to every nation on tho globe European nations have attempted to folow in her footsteps but being less favorably situated overshadowed by Englands immense navy or lacking in legislative foresight to grasp trade opportunities have been left far behind by their formidablecompetitors Only one great nation centrally located with reference to the great trading na tions of Europe South America and China with its of Europe In six years service on that coast I never bought an imported article onshore that I could not have dupli cated at home with a better article for the same money Our manufactures are belter than the European and the people of South America know it and want them but before any marked improvement can be made there must be a radical change in our methods of placing them on the market In this it would be well for our mer chants and manufacturers to study German methods that nation to day being the most aggressive of all commercial nations By means of commercial museums at home alo ina South Americat iiaGold in the South In the South there are evidences t that the people are beginning toI appreciate the importance of aC sound monetary standard in their t daily affairs They are learningi that the investor will not money out unless he can feel sure of repayment in the same standard Lee county Alabama Cast week disposed of 25000 bondsand made them payable in gold The Montgomery Adver tiser in reporting the transaction says there was considerable joU ing at the expense of the goodI natured judge of probate who is a redhot silver disciple because heI voluntarily had gold bonds issued Our contemporary adds The judge in explanation of hisI veryawell for politics but when it comes to business he must look out for the best interests of the county The publicspirited gentleman who had the private deal with the judge is himself a silver man but states that the bonds could not have been sold if they had not been made payable in gold This last fact is the all important one for the Southern and Western peo plo to recognize Let them once understand that a stable monetary standard is the first requirement of the situation and a new era of prosperity will open up to them Financial Chronicle The prosperity of the laboring people the payment of high wages these are alike the cause and result of protection Because the wages of American laborers are higher than the wages of Europe we need protection against that labor with its low wages If American wages were cut down to the foreign levelno one doubts but that American workmen could suc cessfully compete with foreign laborersso long as they were able to keep body and soul together at those pauper wages But it is in order that they may never have to meet such conditions that a pro tective tariff is imposed on the pro ducts of those who do labor under such conditions By such protec tion tho high rate of American wagesis maintained and thus the high wages which were in the be ginning the cause of the imposition of a protective tariff arc also the result bf the maintenance of protectionEx I heard of Dr Bells Pjno Tar Honey and seeing many recommendations from different persons oHts wonderful EXPLANATIONS Special correspondence to THE DEC Frankfort Ky March 31 1897 changeinover the Scuatorship The same disturbing influences that caused the defection of Senator Stege last winter have induced him to desert the nominee again The excuse given is that after taking four votes he is convinced the nominee can not win and as the expenses of the legislature arc 1000 per day he economyYetexpense runs on just the same waggedby peculiar I put the financial question above all others but oppose a protective tariff The sound money Democrats agree with the free silver men in opposing the tariff but denounce their financial theories Why therefore say these latter gentle men should we assist the Republicans to elect a United States Senator and add a vote to the protec tionists although he agrees with us on the money question And why should we help to elect a free sil ver Senator although we do gain a vote against the obnoxious tariff so reason the sound money Demo cratsSo day after day they aid in preventing any election This course if persisted in will result in rele gating the matter to the legisla probability Senator Blackburn The Republicans on the con trary are divided by mere personal preference partitions The con tending factions both advocate the gold standard and the doctrine of protection Yet the minority members of each party arc working to defeat the financial principlesI for which they profess to tending Two votes from the Democrats now voting for Davic or from the Republicans now vot ing for Boyle would prevent Black burn succeeding Hon A T Wood upon the expiration of the temporary term for which ho was appointed If the votes arc not forthcoming the Blackburn man agers should receive an ovation for the consummate skill with which they have maneuvered to play rival ambitions and animosities against each other to win a vic toryThose who allege that the pledge given by Hunter to the Populists meant that he agreed to vote for the free and unlimited coinage of position to the position it held prior to 1873 means just the reverse From 1836 to 1873 there was no free coinage of silver and only subsid iary debased coins were minted And the present Republican Sen ator from Kentucky Hon A T Wood appointed by our stalwart sound money Governor holds the same views and sustains the action ot Hunter in making the pledge and denounces those who bolt a caucus nominee Mr Nance on Wednesday 24th rose to again explain his vote Re plying to newspaper criticisms as to the inconsistency of his course in voluntarily participating in the recent caucus and in it seconding the nomination of Judge Holt and voting for him instead of for Boyle whom he now contends was at that time and still remains the le gitimate nominee he Stated that he partyfricndsinpitulated the history of the caucus nomination of Boyle last winter Showed that in that caucus Deboe received thirtytwo votes and Holt twentyeight and insisted that De boe was fairly placed in nomina tion But he said instead of dc laring such to be the case an adjournment was decided upon in an arbitrary manner till next day when contrary to what was just and right matters were fixed up as the boys said for harmonys sake and Boyle viasorted upon the party as the caucus nominee It would seem to a disinterested and judicial mind that this last explanation effectually overturns the le gitimate nominee theory advanced in the first that he should at this time be either voting for Deboe or acquiesce in theca cus decision now as he did last winter The journals of the joint sessions show that Mr Nance voted for Hunter after Senator Landes produced and read the celebrated agreement and it is stated by those who were present III the caucus succeeding the exposure in which Hunter in terpreted the meaning of the paper satisfactorily to his friends that Mr Nance was one of those who determined to stand by him to the last Hunters withdrawal next day left him free On
