It is said that Ernest Claytor, with the Schubert Quartette, is nuking a decided hit with his fine nor, and promises to become uite a distinguished singer. The ?J cccption ofthe'Schubcrtsat Madi- popvilleAon the evening of Tues day, February a, will be more enthusiastic than ever before. t An Aversion to "Plants" We understand one of Madison-villc'- s substantial citizens ia much exercised over the prospective passage of a curfew ordinance in that city. His principal objections are that taxes are high enough as it is, and he docs not believe a 'plant" would pay expenses in a town of that size. He says he wants his children to have all the comforts of lifo and as many of the luxuries as he can afford, and that he knows if they do succeed in introducing "curfews" in Madisonville, he pll have to invest; for he says he is not the man to stand around and hear his children crying for curfew without setting them up, qslong as he's got a cent. Ho thinks Madisonville, at the rate she is travelling, is bound to overreach herself. Ho goes on to explain that the first symptom of metropolitan dissipation made its appearance when a cloud of wires, cross-armand posts settled down upon the town and the disturbance became central in a telephone exchange. The same cloud thickened up a little, and they set up electric light plants in the place of shade trees along some of the streets, which the taxpayers call and now nobody is in it unless his house is festooned with electric vines, and decorated with incandescent morning glories. They were not satisfied with this, so he says, but agitated a a sort of irrigation machine to sprinkle the other plants with. And now, right on top of the whole capoodlc, before the children have hardly learned to ride their bicycles, he says, they want to put in a small sized in fact, a child's sized curfew plant. One of his neighbors advised him to look up on "curfew" before expressing himself too freely. He got down the children's dictionary that night, and, after exhausting tne "k's," finally ran across this definition: "Curfew: Originally, a signal to cover fires, extinguish lights, etc." Next morning, he apologized and said he 'would not have known a "curfew" had he met it in tho troad, but now he was posted. "Still," said he, "I'm posed to 'em, or any other blamed funnel-shapes d water-work-pla- might kivcr up and smother out a a little fire, but 'twouldn't do to chance 'em on the new city hall." Rev. J. W. Llgon. A letter received from Rev. I. W. Ligon corrects the reports that he is to move from Trenton. He says: "I have accepted a call from the church (at bebrce) to serve them as preacher this year, but have no intention of changing my I shall re place of residence. main here among the good people whom I have learned to love, and will visit Sebree once a month from this place." This is quite a distance to. go but the call was urgent and unanimous. Mr. Ligon congregation once had served-thbefore. He now has four congregations, Trenton, Guthrie, F.ner-gesi- a and Sebree. at patent They England and elsewhere, the ringing of a bell at an early hour in the evening, gave the signal to the inhabitants of a town or village to extin guish their fires and lights and get themselves off home. There was no age limit (hen, for the older persons were more likely than the children to get into mischief and brawls on the street. But there arc some who do not know the full import of "curfew." The term comes through the French and is but a slight modification of the French couvrefeu, meaning "cover-fire,- " According to the best authorities this was a very common police regulation during the middle ages, as a protection against fires as well as against nocturnal disorders in the unlightcd streets. The practice is commonly said to have been introduced into England from the continent by William the Conqucror, but it probably existed there before this time. The curfew-bel- l is still rung in some places at 9 o'clock, though it is several centuries since it was required by law. One writer says: "The kloka is in Abo (Finland), even at the present day traverse the towns crying the Those time.' abroad arc told to 'make haste home,' and those at home to 'put out their fires.' " The latter would be a rather cold custom in Finland, but that is what the writer says, and we are not responsible for his inconsistencies. We have enough boys in Earlington who have been corrupted, are being corrupted, and a world of others coming on who will be subject to the corruption of back- alley, dark cornered meanness and wickedness, of which there are always many willing and apept exponents among older boys and men who get their education that way and are happiest when communicating to younger generations s and thus perpetuating all the of which they have become masters. Many men do not consider the corrupting influence of their oaths and vile stones upon the boy in his hearing, but the result is as serious as if he had set himself deliberately at the work of corruption of the boy's morals. Let us now put a"thou shall not" on our ordinance book, and stand between the boys and these influences which work their ruin. Some months ago The Bee spoke briefly in advocacy of a curfew law for Earlington, but the campaign was then the only thing that could Now, howarouse any interest. ever, it is different. If you could hear all the expressions and see the interest and earnestness exhibited by the many citizens whom The Bee has interviewed, you would be impressed with the certainty of the crystallization of this sentiment into the much needed law. Fully; 500 men are now idle and may be for some time, as the officers of the company decline to make 'an advance or even a proposition. The vital importance of careful provision for ventilation in mines'in the West has been made manifest by the fact that all coal mines are horizontal, and that any gas heavier than air, as most of the dangerous gases are, would have to ba forced to the surface in order to avdid danger from them. The recent mine disaster at Princeton, III., which mine apparently was not only not provided with the proper appliances, but was also minus an air sha!t in good working order, evidently shows that, as the result of negligence on the part of the mine inspectors, serious loss of life has occured. Mine inspectors aro welt paid, and any neglect ot duty on their part, or violation of law, should be punished. The Western Alabama Coal Association, which recently established a barge line between Greenville, Miss , and Louisiana, is working up a good business, and the tonnage shipped increases weekly especially with the towns in the latter State. This is due to the peculiarly mild, unseasonable weather so prevalent throughout Ilia West. Several Western trunk lines are taking little more than 50 per cent of the fuel they usually consume at this season of the year. Again, there are many large plants which are not running at all, or at least have resumed with small forces, and the loss in this direction is equally great. Hence it will be seen that soft coal of all kinds languishes, and there is a heavy surplus on roads. Still, a the tracks of all permanent change to colder weather and a quick enlog ot manufacturing industry would materially affect the situation and bring about a moro active danund.
