fallacies in the face of his opposite convictions ¬ ¬ The annual report of the Secre tary of Agriculture prtBcnts some facts which it would bo well for farmers to study instead of read ing so much of die current litera ture of calamity They will dis cover by giving proper attention to these interesting statistics that whilo they may have causes of complaint they arc by no means in suco a bad fix generally speak ing as thc Populist orators and writers arc continually telling them For instance out of each tooo farms in the country only anu three 282 are mortgaged fourths of the money represented by these mortgages was borrowed to purchase or improve the farms The total liens thus incumbered upon lands used for tillage and the production of crops aggregate exclusive of the mortgages given by railroads and other corporations less than one sixth of the total in debtedness upon the real estate of Moreover the heavthe nation farm mortgage burden is not iest in the West and South when there is most complaint but in the East where there is and Northeast comparatively little talk about Singularly agricultural distress enough too the average rate of interest on farmloans is not higher as is persistently proclaimed but lower than the rato upon other real estate loans When the Western farmers arc asked to believe that their mort gaged property is decreasing in value while their debts remain the same it is easy for them to ascertain that such is not the case The statistics prove that there has been a steady maintenance of land values in nearly all sections and in some a decided enhancement says Between 1880 and 1890 the increase Secretary Morton of farming land values as reported by the occupants of the farms themselves was more than enough to offset the entire interest charge for the decade in most of the great agricultural States of the West and In Kansas and Nebraska South the increase of land values 111 that period of time exceeded the entire farm incumbrance principal and intercstand in the States of Washington and California it was nearly twice as great as the combined Of course principal and interest these facts do not touch the question of the decline in the prices of farm products and do not signify that agriculture is as profitable as it used to be but they do show that the case qf the farmers is misrepresented when it is said to be one of practical impoverishment They are in debt to some extent like dther folks but not more than other folks and the low prices that they grumble about arc to be seen in all other lines of producIn short they are the viction of general influences of detims pression in common with other classes and the times will get better for them just as fast as the prosperity of the country at large is restored not by processes of special legislation for their benefit but by the operation of natural laws that apply to all kinds of business and all forms of industry Globe Democrat ¬ Of J Couldnt
