people in Hop kins county The chief towns are Madisonville Earlington and Dawson In Dawson they have some water good for health I like to go to Pond River to fish I think it is a nice place at tho lake I like to fish there too Pond River in not far from Madisonville There are some prdtty places in Hopkins county Thero nro many nice churches and Sunday schools I like to go to Sunday to go to pick flowers LlLtlE Toomiis ODD PRODUCTS OF ¬ UTAHS MINES Utah the newest of the States seems to be a mineralogical freak Mr George Eldridge of the Geological Survey was sent out there a few weeks ago for the purpose of looking up certain natural resources and he has returned with a most interesting report Among other things he found great deposits of mineral rubber enough to make gum shoes for a large part of the population of the United States A piece of this substance about eight inches square and one inch thick was lying on his desk It was blacjc and looked and felt like ordinary rubber and was quite elastic The scientific name for this substance is elateritc It may in tho future be put to many valuable uses and for a roofing ma terial has already proven excellent In thq mining town of Utah mineral rubber is utilized commonly for roofing being prepared in shcqts consisting of a layer of bur lap with tho rubber on both sides Nothing could be more thoroughly waterproof Another unexplored mineral and one about which very little is known is mineral wax or as it is scientifically known In ozokerite parts of Utah it is found in veins like the mineral rubber though sometimes the ozokento occurs in pockets between layers of shale It has not been mined at all but many uses for it are likely to bo discovered in tho future To electricians it will be valuable in asmuch as it it ono of the best in sulating materials known Gum asphalt represents a great mineral resourco that has hardly been touched as yet as it has only been mined to u small extent It is an exceedingly pure kind of asp halt and its important usefulness is in tho manufacture ot varnishes The conditipns under which it is found are so extraordinary that no abl to account fpr body tbtm talMMtorUy JTs Wuosits ¬ ¬ ¬ ¬ are found chiefly within and in the neighborhood of theUncompaghre reservation It appears in veins having a tendency to run parallel to each other with a trend from These northwest to southeast veins vary in width from a quarter of an inch to eighteen feet and they are from a half a mile to six niiles in length Nobody knows how deep they are It is believed that they extend to a depth of nearly 1000 feet so that the quantity of material obtainable is enormous The greatest depth thus far reached Mining for the stuff is 125 feet has hardly got beyond the pros peqting stage The veins are perFor a few feet fectly vertical from the surface the substance is more or less impure owing to weathering but lower down it is Dig entirely free from impurities ging for it is the hardest work imaginable owing chiefly to the dust The atmosphere of the shafts becomes literally loaded with asphalt dust which is highly explosive The body heat melts it so that it forms a brown coat all over a person exposed to it Soap and water are no good for washing it off The only thing that will remove it is kerosene A tank for kerosene is kept handy so that everybody who comes out of the mines
