Reduction of South Iern Representation The Georgia Baptist has in season and out contended for the full and complete recognition of the AfroAmer can citizenship We have ever insisted that every child born on American soil should enjoy every right privilege and immunity in common We have tenaciously opposed every uhase of Jim Crowism because it is the out growth of prejudice that draws racial and other lines that under any and ev ery circumstance are di criminative The men who enacted the II Jim Crow laws may be honebt and sincere they m y think tbey subserve the public good but all of their reasoning is founded upon either personal preju dice or a recognition of the prejudices of others The Supreme Court of the United Stet s yielded to tbe prejudices of the white people of the South when it decided that a state may enact laws requiring the separation of travelers on railioad tral B just as though people were horses and cows Such laws are always discriminative in their ap plication and there is no remedv The franchise is a bulwark of Amer l Ican citizenship The women of the country as a rule do not vote and because of this they are at the mercy ol the men and notwithstanding the in tuna relations which they sustain to the men they are the subjects ol many injustices beuause they have ac ballot with which to protect them selves Take the ballot from any claw oi men andlthose men SB a class become helpless as against the class who have the ballot A government of the peo1- Jle by the people and for the people must be a government founded upon I the use of the ballot The ballot privilege voting while no white man Is so deprived The constitn tionsl remedy is not to compel these states to remove J the unjust diecrimin ations but reduce their representation in Congress The representation in Congress was the best or most adequate remedy for disfranchisement in the South True it may be a legal remedy but things lawful may not always be expedient and this is the trouble with this remedy Will the conditions as far as the Negro is concerned be changed or improved If he is still disfranchised with no hope of the ban being removed is he not just as well off with the representation as it is as he would be if it is reduced The reasonable conclusion seems to be that what t ever remedy is found should be for r the purpose of finally securing the repeal or abolishment of these dis criminating measures and the I recognition of manhood rights Some of these measures have the ppearance of placing the sanction oi moral approval upon the laws which disfranchise the Negro and a willingness to accept the reduction representation as ample satisfac 4tionfor this disfranchisement This charact of legislation in our opin ion does not meet the case for the remedy ought to remove the cause and in no way approve unconstitu tional and unjust legislation The Platt bill while general in character in many respects is the same in spirit and in the main is open to this same objection We confess it is a grave question and will re quire wise and careful consideration but we should go slow in accepting any adjustment of the question that will result in the permanent disfranchisement of the Negro in the South In keeping with the custom and sentiment of the Christmas season every one is looking forward to a fun enjoyment of its pleasures This is right and proper but there is or ought to be just as much pleasure in giving as in receiving for it is really more blessed to give than to receive This is the spirit that should try to add to the pleasure and happiness of others There are many good and deserving people who will be unable to share in the Merry Christmas unless others more fortunate will put themselves to the trouble to see that they are remembered This should be a pleasant duty for those who are as willing to serve as they are to be served Those who sac rifice time means ability and strength for the uplift of the people should not be forgotten and no more fitting time than this could beselected to remember the earn est pastor faithful superintendent and zealous teacher than this The loved ones at home must not be forgotten and all Washington D C last week was a neutrality convention called for the purpose of adjusting these differences But seriously it is time that the breth ren in the city of Brotherly Love were settling their differences and not longer endanger the vantage ground which they have gained or retard the progress which the denomination has been making in that section The doubling of our subscription list would a blessing to the denom ination and the race in more ways thai one and at no season in the year could this be more easily accomplished than at this time If eachsubscriber would just send one additional subscriber to begin with the new year the task would be accomplished Every home should have a good paper coming into it weekly and no agency for good is more potent We will ap preciate
