were many homes all over this country where umptuousi feasts were spread Thanksgiving and realizing there were many poor especially poor children who were without food even bread over which to give thanks the Wo mans Industrial Club sent out a letter to a number of friends soliciting do natiocB of provision with which to Rive a dinner to such poor children as we could reach Our request was giv peice of property to a purchaser because at the time he made the contract he did not know that the party was a colored man and that had he been in possesion of that information he would not have made the contract The Court held that such a reason lor not comply ing with a specific contract was in valid and that such a reason was not sufficient in the absence of other andmore consistent ones Or in other words that the color of a man could not be advanced as a sufficient cause for failure to carry out an agreement Perhaps the sentiment behind this contention does much to operate against the advancement oi the race for it prevents many a colored man from removing from congested and immoral districts pP hFlIbpc of placing his amtt under more helpful andencourag ref inviroments but placed inI LI I the way rI TilE decision of the Court of Ap1 peals in accord with precedents formerly laid down ordering the votes of the two precincts in the J Ninth District cast for Judge Ben fOfConKless who want an honest vote aldaD honest counting off votes at elections There was no charge of fraud for all admitted that the votes were f cast for Judge Bennett but were simply omitted from the count be 1 cause of the carelessness or negligence of the election officers These officers were willing to remedy the error but the Cou ty Commissioners would not permit it because that oflaofl view of the question and ordered the votes to be counted The court knew that this decision would change the result of the election but it is right and the right must prevail Such decisions give the people a higher regard for the law and the courts and gives the assur I ante that their property and their sacredlyIJtIj THERE are some things about the Southern people hard to understand findingtout During the campaign they were denouncing President Roose velt about his attitude on the race question and in this way aroused the little enthusiasm that was displayed in that section in the Presi dential election Now they are vie bigotherin their effort to linduce him to vjsit the South at an 1 I i early date and are arranging to give I him a hearty aud elaborate wel come Several large cities have j already extended invitations and others are to follow This is a fitting and appropriate tning to do and as the President has not changed his views upon any of these questions it is hoped that the Couth is now willing to reconize his position of being the President of all the peo ple WE seldom have anything to say in these columns about our affairs and yet this is perhaps the most economical way of reaching our readers In putting in a new press anda new engine some time ago we were compelled to contract a large debt which we have beeo un able to pay on account ot slow rains from the Rig Sandy to the Tennessee line and while not copions and sufficient they did much to lesson the suffering which the farmers especially have endured for months Every green thing had withered and ponds springs and streams everywhere were dry and the outlook was very discouraging Railroads were haul ing water to supply engines and in some cases were even supplying water for some
