of last Tues day and never have results ben more assuring rend satisfactory Without regard to political affilIa- tion or cmiditi n they were unani mous in supporting the candidacy of Theodore Roosevelt and it is safe to say that no candidate ever re ceived more loyal support than they accorded to him for it was the con sensus of opinion that his election meant more to them than the election of any previous candidate for that exalted position His election was a victory of justice over injus tice a victory of law over lawlessness a victory oi right over wrong andevery colored man felt a per sonal interest in the contest and gave his influence and vote to secure this result The returns show that he carried every Northern state and oven brolTe the solid South lIiv I ciniig Missouri He will have 343 in the Electoral College to 133 for Parker anda popular majority of 150000 being the largest vote ever cast for any candidate for Presi dent In additii n to this the Re publicans have gained several sen ators and many representatives and will have a majority of over one flu nditd votesin the lower house of Ccngress was a veritable landslide arid even more than met the expectations of the most san guine and hopeful In Kentucky in addition to the Eleventh District which is always Republican the Republicans have possibly carried the Third and Ninth districts which would be a gain of two congress martTni reports of the Ciy Health Office furnishes from time to time souse very interesting ffcts concerning our people which deserve to receive the serious consideration of thoughtful people According t the cinsus the colored people are about i in fifth of the fiitire popu Isiti notf the city and under usual nn iitiins the birthrate ond death rate should be about one fifth of the birthand death rate but instead of that th birth rate is lower and the death rate is higher almost every week Take the October report for instance which was an unusually healthy month and there were 230 deaths There should have been acct riling to the proportion of population only 48 deaths among the colored people but instead there were 67 There were 393 Firths of which number there were only 19 colored when there should have been 59 This increase in the death rate and decrease in the birth rate may be explained but as the law is the same in both cases we are at a loss to understand the discrepancy It is a very impor tant matter and those interestedwill find n fine field for investigating a subject that is of material interest to the race THE Norfolk News
