interest manifested In the proceedings and much good was ac r complished There are a number of able preachers in that Itate and the number II increasing every year as the denomination increases Parents Be of Aid in Teaching Missions at Home 1 and another on Ihe Importance of Denominational Literature The Committee on Enrollment reported the attendance of about sixty delegates and tte Finance missionary work is one which will effect tHe entire Negro Bap tist lamily in the United btatos and whereas the unity of the Negro Baptist is a paramount issue with us and Whereas there Is a difference of opin ion among us touching the amended plans of cooperation with the South ern Baptist brethren and Whereas this convention knows no Noitb no South no East no West in lie religious work Resolved of this place for 14 years He served as treasure for 12 years and as member of the deacon board four years He was married to Belle Chambers in 1886 and has been a faithful husband to her until his death He was confined to his bed about two weeks and during that time he suffered and bore it with that patient and fortitude of a true and tried soldier of the Cbrlst The angel of death came to his Field and a letter from Secretary B D Gray say that the Negro Convention at Aus tin did most heartily endorse the present plan of cooperation be tween that convention and our Home Board Dr Gray says By some mistake the report has been circulated that the Negro Conven tion at Austin refused to endorse the plans of our Home Board fo workamong the Negroes The convention did endorse our plans an workweDr Boyd secretary ol the Negro Board says The Boards action was unanimously endorsed that iis to say the opposition found them selves so hopelessly in the minority that they did not vote at all and and this made it unanimous as far the vote was concerned The mis take seems to have come from the fact that the Negro Convention de cided to endorse the resent are rangement by shelving all possible opposition for a year but the opposition did not materialize The Baptist Argus From the above it is evident that there must be a misunderstanding among our white brethren about the position of the National Baptist Convention upon the question of Cooperation The record will show that when the report of the Home Mission Board was read that all the II report was adopted except that part J referring to the Amended plans of co operation and that was referred to a special committee of six from the Country at large and one from each state Then the resolution offered by Rev E C Morris D D was adopted This resolution with the names of the committee and the action thus far taken is print r in another column Read this and form your own conclusions The inference that the opposition was hopelessly in the minority is a great mistake Some of the ablest and most prominent members of the convention were against the plan and it is very doubtful whether it could have been adopted or not and it is the opinion of many of the leaders that this strong and persistent opposition was the only thingr that induced the advocates of the measure to agree to even a reference of the question to a committee- SLAST week Judge Thos G Jone of the U S Court of Alabama in Hutsville created a sensation by hi charge to the Grand Jury by direct ing them to indict any members of the mob which lynched Horace Mables it after a thorough investi it was evident to the jury that they lynched him because of his color and would not have lynched white man under the same circumstances He also charged that if the mob w asto actuated by race prejudice the lync ing constituted crime against the United States and the offense was S violation of the thirteenth amend I meat He also directed the grand jury to indict the members of the mob for firing the jail in which i United States prisoners were co fined When it is remembered thatit ledge lODes has always been a dem vn- i jo Il I J4 ds u ocrat though appointed by a Repub lican President these utterances are significant and indicate that the spirit of fairness and justice in not dead This iis a new issue but when it is raised by a learned judge there must be a reasonable presumption that it is sound law and will scrutinyLynch point of view and in time some method legal or otherwise will be found to suppress it FOR ten years Rev C L Purce D D has served State University faithfully and well as President and the denomination has decided to observe this in an appropriate way at the anniversary of the University in November The General As sociation approved the recommen dation of the Board of Trustees to that effect at its last session and the Baptist Womens Educational Con movementiQand will give Dr Purce a public reception in honor oi the event Now that the movement has been inaug urated every friend to the Univer sity is asked to assist and make it a notable event Besides the social features it is proposed to raise one thousand
