meet ng of the Na tional Negro Business League assem bled in the city of Indianapolis in jUuinbtrH and lu interest sheave by the delegates present from every part of the republic emphasizes anew the wisdom by the founders of tile League It demonstrates the influence which the League has exerted upon our great Negro population in stimulating the saving spirit among them to labor toga of those worthy to be counted with the upliftiug and conservative forges of the national citizenship In tbe brief pertl od of its ex stance it has shown that the raceia animated by the same im pulses for individual race and national uplift winch animate others of our fellowcitlzenlt and that they need only an others need it the inspiration of close association and wisp council It iis a fair conclusion from tbe fact Jpresented in this convention that the Negro people have shown their capaci ty in the entire field of manual tabor employments and that the results of their labor in tbobe employments are no lest worthof honorable records titan thos3 of others Of the ten mitten hates or cotton produced in the molted States last year eighty per cent was the j product of Negro labor while a prince ly acreage on which tho cotton was produced is now the property of these who forty years ago did not own them selves And the constant increase of the farm holding of the Negroes and of cotton and other agricultural prod ucts with lit developweet of the now Negro busiues man and therefore of tbe bankers six of whom are members of the League is not only one of tne t1mP8sbuWhen one Kansas farmer a member of the League requires 161 cars to move his annual crop of white potatoes to the market when one barber employs e 20 men when ono man manufactures carriages and buggies when one woman in a northern community can oruate a domestic science school out of nerve and persistent effort when it is shown that the race by testimony by numbers of the League are making a place intbe industrial and the Home Mission Board to the National Baptist Con vention in Austin Texas last week the Board affirms that after three years earnest toil we are compelled to bring this magnificent paper back to the convention and say that our Board finds it both unprofitable and impracticable to publish it under the present arrangements The paper met with flattering success for two years but the change has caused toIdaythan 60 per cent of what it was a year ago We believe that anyone of the Boards could take the paper and make it a success after a num ber of years work We therefore turn it over to the convention with whatever interest your Board may have in the paper as the Board feels the Convention is mucb better prepared to run a denominational paper and defray the expenses than any OlA Boat When this paper 1asstarted it was the consensus of opinion of many experienced and practical newspaper men that the project would not succeed Experi ence has verified that opinion and instead of the Convention conducting a paper it would be well togive support to those already established using their columns for the work of the convention as the necessity demands In this way a larger num ber of readers would be reached than any paper established by the convention could possibly do and with a very much smaller expendi tore of money THE movement to inaugurate a series ot revivals or a general revi val in this city as a cure for law lessness and immorality in this e community is no doubt prompted by the right spirit and will be successful only so far as the flood people it support and encouragement There is entirely too much of the disposition to allow these matters to take care of themselves and for that reason much that is good and wholesome fails to be as affective as it shouldt be No class of people in this com- munitY need the influence of thesep reform movements more than ours andthe excuse that the evils of which general complaint is made origina tea among others make the errors of our race none the less reprehensible norharmful The most cau anal observer must confess that the lawless and disorderly1 class of our people are increasing far too rapid ly and that they are growing auda cious and bold in their transgressions If This class must be sup tt pressed or reformed or it will be as a millstone upon the neck of the i race and will do more than its 1 share in saloon in the city owned by colored men but today there must be at least a halfdozen and still there are more to follow The fact that so many applications are filed for the opening of new saloons so frequently proves that they must be profitable or other wise the parties would not desire to engage in the business It is also equally true that the saloons are doing more to degrade and destroy the young men especially of the race than any other agency On this account a strong sentiment should be created against the sa loon in the church in order that it may not multiply or destroy the good work of saving and uplifting the people This idea ofencourag ing every kind of business upon general principles is a mistake and the fact that a colored man con ducts it makes it no less harmful than if it the church edifice fund to help poor and needy churuhes The second Sunday in October is the designa ted time to raise collections for this work and circulars calling attention to it has already been sent out A generous response to this appeal will place the Executive Board in a position to help a number of needy and deserving chuches either in the way of loans or direct gifts Many stragetic points could be occupied with great benefit to the denomina tion if this day was observed properly and it is one of the needs of the hour to have uniformity of action in the raising of collections by the several churches for these objects If every church win bear it in mind and raise the collection let it be great or small on that daythe work of helping poor churches willtake ia definite and assuring change for the better THE indicting of the members of the mob at Huntville Ala last week for the lynching of the colored man Maples is a strong indication that public sentiment is being aroused even if conviction does not follow Some of the parties indicted are prominent in business social and political circles and this fact indi cates that those who engage in lawlessness dq not always belong to the lower classes as is sometimes believed It has been found necessary to call the militia to Huntsville in order to maintain the law and prevent the liberation of the men who have been indicted and are under arrest The officers of the law in that city and the Governor of the state ought to be sup portorted in the effort to apprehend the partis engaged in this lynching business and to mete out to them the punishment they deserve under the law THE session of the National Bap tist Convention in Austin Texas last week was the largest and most successful in the history of the or
