We desire to call your attention to the fact that tbe first quar ter will close the lajt or the present month As you all know that wu have Increased our missionary force In the state by the appointment of another missionary which divides the state into three districts Western Central aud Eastern The brethren who are employed tell us they are doing all they tan with the means they have to go upon We all know we cannot make cricks without straw neither can we I do mission work without moauy For man to do actual missionary work he la KO luto the debtitute regions and stay there and America It Is not poser inedetail the pressing needs of our mission fields but believe me that the honor of our Foreign Mission Board and th good of the Baptist denomination de pends very largely upon person in this city as was ao corded to Dr Booker T Washington at the Metropolitan A M K church last Friday evening His lectrue had been expected for some weeks and ev ery arrangement had been made for his naming both in the way of a public reception and a banquet in his honor The banquet on Thursday evening was held at udd Fellewe Hall where one hundred and fifty guests assembled and enjoyed a splendid spread A more representative body of men have never met In Washington to do any citizen honor than were stated at that festal board and the toasts were of the most fitting and appropriate character The wee small hours of the morning came be Purr the banquet was over The public reception war arranged for Irilday evening but the trustees ef the church whose gueat Mr Waaingtou was gave him an elegant complimentary dinner at the home of Mr H oasaitor No 1217 Seventeenth Street In addition to the trustees of the church there were a number of personal friends of the die fbliogton t the evening by the cadets from the High School and the Armstrong Menu el Training School and this duty was performed in a most Impressive way The boys marched in perfect order and were delighted to do honor to the distinguished visitor When the church was reached great difficulty was experienced I in securing entrance because every seat in the large auditorium was I taken and the crowd extended way out into the streets so eager were the peo ple to hear Mr Washington No speak er before was ever able to 1111 this great building but in this case the tickets for every seat was sold before the lecture besides this Mr Washing ton had donated the entire proceeds to the church which was greatly appreci ated Upon the platform were seated a number of diatlngniseed men of both laces to receive the speaker The Ma rine Band in full uniform rendered several numbers during the evening which every one enjoyed as was the chorus by the students of the Manual Training School Mr ti Laaalter pre aided and Bishop B W Arnett offered the invocation The addrese of wel come was made by Commissioner Moo larland and the speaker of the evening was introduced by C agreismau Jamea B Watson of iudlauia In his remarks Mr Watson among other things said of the attempt to wipe out the fourteenth and fifteenh amendments that they had been written in blood to stay He referred to tie advancement of tbe Ne gro race In respect to what has been said of late about dining out and of in vitntioufl to dinner said he I deem it an honor and a privilege in this house of God where all men are equal to introduce that man who Commissioner Macfarland has fittingly said is leading his race upward a man who is makeehim great in any race and In any time Mr4Washington was greeted with round after round of applause and 11 anyone in this city ever doubted the esteem in which he is held in this city it was dispelled on this occasion Mr Washington spoke along the lines of race development of the Negros rela tion with the white people of the South bee lief that no race In ancient or modern history has ever equaled the American Negro In development in all directions I further believe he said that in demontstate to the world that we can become thee highest and best oivllzatlon One of the most important source of protection that any race of people can have Is their usefulness to th community in which they dwell Ser Thee man black or white who has learned do something better than his fellows IIto has learned to do a common thin an uncommon manner In time will Iin all the problems that confront him at least Our children every labornwhether with the head or hand is hon orable land all forms of Idleness die gracefulWhatever faults the South may be guilty of when it comes to affordln an opportunity his speech Mr Washington i said On the question of tbe ballot I say here what 1 have said mauv times InI the South As to my own position II do not favor the Negroes giving up auythlug that ia fundamental anti which ia guaranteed by Constitution of the United tales It la not beat for hint to relinquish any rights nor would his doing ao be the bet for the Southern white man Every law placed in the Constitution of the United Sates ws placed there to encourage and stimulate the highest citizenship If the Negro is not stimulated and encouraged I by just national and state laws to become the highest type ot citizen the result will be W Jrse for the Southern white man than for the Ne gro Unless the Negroes are encour aged by just election lawa to become taxpayers and intelligent producers the white people will have an eternal millatone about their necks ClAny subterfuge any makeshift in the form of law that gives the ignorant white man a right to express his want at the ballot box and withholds the same privilege from the ignorant Ne gro is an injustice to both races In most cases such laws give the Negro the incentive to become a voter by gutting property and intelligence but says to the wbite man in so many words remain in ignorance and poverty and a way will be found for you to exercise the franchise Regarding lynching I repeat also what I have said many times in the South that the taking of human life without due process of law whether in Georgia or in Ohio is a blot upon our civilization Further tbat we should at all times stand read as a race to join hands with all people to see that crime is uot committed by our people and to see that legal punishment fol lows such crime He urged the necessity for progressive positive constructive work as the chief reliance for success and declared that education was not Injuring the colored raceUT 8 records of the Southern States he said show that 80 per oeuu ol the colored people in prison are without trades and 61 per cent are wholly Illiterate If the sta Uatlcs show that the Negro in Massachusetts is five times as criminal as the Negro lu Mississippi the same statis tics prove that the white man la Massa chusetts is at best ten times more Brim nal than the white man to Mississippi At the conclusion of his eloquent ad dress hundreds of people rushed forward to extnd their congratulations and well wishes Mr pension roll has a precedent iin the action of Congress in placing waeveryr on the pension roll when he had reached the age of sixty two year t WHEN the new Constitution of Kentucky was framed it not only eliminated many features which were cut of date but embraced J others of more modern and pro gressive character Among these were the secret ballot which ha worked satisfactorily and assured a freedom in voting which was al1 most unknown in this State prior Consttj tution The last Legish ture however has put itself upon record as willing to go back to the old viva l voce method of voting and has accordingly submitted a constitu tional amendment to the people providing for ths change This amendment will not be voted upon until November 1905 but it is not too early to begin the crusade against it so that the people maybe thoroughly advised and bury under an avalanch of vottsthat will stand for a free and full right of every citizen to vote his sentiments upon every question without fetr off ostracism criticism or employ menteA change simply means a return to the practices that will prevent citizens from voting their honest sentiments THE fact that Secretery Jordan is on his way to Africa and w not be in this country Sunday April 3rd ought to be an l reason for every church and Su an daY school raising its collecti dayor Foreign Missions f 1 1thatone day in the year is such a cause The money is needed and every effort should be made to make Sunday April 3rd a record breaking day for foreign missions THE Eb neer Baptist Churchof Austin Tex and its good pastor Rev L L Campbell D D has begun planning in earnest for en tertiming the National Baptist Convention which will meet in that city in September Already the 2 churches and pastors have organ ed and the state county and city officials as well as the business or ganizations of the city have given their assurance of approval and assistance to the plan to enter taro the convention All indica point to a successful convention and from this time on the watchword will be On to Austin Mission Work in Central District I desire to speak a few words to the brethren about my work as missionary in the Central part of IKentucky We have been for the most part among churches in the Zion District Association which was formerly a part of the Liberty Association having drawn outt was organized with Rev J Neal moderator Revs J H Gaddie and J J Brown now moderator and theiar last session at Pleasant Grove I I met a band of 60 or 70 earnest brethren about equally divided beI tween laymen and preachers The former take great interest in th annd boards Some of them travel as ffar as one hundred miles to visit these annual meetings The place at which the last session was held was about thirty miles from th railroad The motto of the brethren is missions I visited many of their churches and found many noble hearted nee and women One brother came 40 miles last December in order to at tend a board meeting Not only are they intelligent but tearer Baptists alive and hearty in sym denominationsal1 work Rev Brown has someone qualed ideas about prosecuting the mission work in our state which believe if given to the brethren through the newspapers would effect much good I owe to him intense gratitude for his help and As Rice showed himself actively iin harmonywith the work While iin this section the Lori blessed my labor with the conversion of a number t of souls Of the Pleasant Un ion church of which Rev Brown iis pastor I must say it is the banner church of my district pay ing its entire apportionment at once While in this section visited the Liberty Association in company with Rev l H Frank D D Moderator of the General Association and RevI P H Kennedy D D Generaly Missionary The members gave us ita hearty reception and con largely to our work Hire we met Rev G W Samples one of the strong forces of the Association He as the other members abounds in zealand in the right
