that the National BapTist Publishing Board was about to issue exprefsIdMissionthes which is made annually for tha thework nor do we believe now that itt was the purpose of the Publishinig Board to- obstacle intentionally place a sin gle in the way of Forei n Missions and we accept with en exPlanatiotI by Dr Boyd in the NationsLIl ililI ilmade Union on that point b the inferences of our desire t raise an issue with his Board is en tirely premature In this Dr Boyd has furnished another illus traion as to how true to life is the anecdote told of the British Lawyer He was handed a summaryr of a case for him to examine and report the line of argument to bt pursuedAfter an investigation he marked across the document uNo case Abuse the defendants attorney He says If it is the intention off the Amencan Baptist or its friends t to raise war on the National Bap tilt Publishing Board or its Secre tary why should it not be bold enough or whatever friend i may have be bold enough to come out in the open fight Dr Boyd1 in this remark intimate that the American Baptist has some sinister motives and is trying to deliver a blow in the dark It appears to us that this is an age when the tactics of the British lawyer might be discarded As to whether the American Baptist iis or is not spoiling for a fight with Dr Boyd is not the question The simple question is as to whether the issuance of the Easter pro gramme by Dr Boyd will prove to be good and raise no more extran eous questions and in fact without such promise we will now infor t him that we are not contemplating aay fight on its Board or Secretary The simple fact In the matter i our Foreign Mission Board oughtt to enjoya monoply of the Easter arrangements so far as Negro Baptist are concerned just as the Pub lishing Board enjoys a monopoly of Sundayschool literature an I Childrens Day so far as competition with Negro publishing houses t are concerned Surely the best entrenched of o denominational agencies mighti make that much of a sacrifice for one of the weaker agencies and iin this way leave an open field t Foreign Mission Work Then again the issuing of an Easter ser vice simply as a business enterprise by the Publishing Board may ibe construed as placing the sanction ofofficial and denominational ape proval upon a custom which th churches composing the National Baptist Convention do not endorse We are tore a sober second thought o will convince the Publishing Boar that the suggestion made along1 tkete lines may be observedwitn crt injury to their specific work andJ that a good Baptist tray make eve a public suggestion to then without asingle sinister ormalicious motive I Some starga things happen in this I I COQBtry showing the peculiar con dition which obtain in some sections and which pass with but a passing comment In New Orleans last lii day furious indignation was aroused in confederate circles because Supt Vilson of the public schools in add ressing the pupils extolled Abraham Lincoln and held him up as a model for southern schoolchildren Almost instantly there was an outburst of indignation and be received both verbal and written protests against his utterances The Pycaune in dis cussing the matter used these strong wor dsTo teach the Southern children to fix such stain and stigma upon their own fathers and mothers is little less than a crime thetf I most serious sert There is no reason why the children of the South should be taught to tor J the glorious memories of one of thetI grandest and most patriotic and heroic as it is one of the bloodiest tragedies in history When Gene Godon the Confederate leader died a few days ago President Roose velt sent a telegram ot sympathy and tke flags of the Government of which Gen Gordon had fought to destroy were placed at half mast in honor oi his memory This senti ment was approved and commended all over the South but when the virtues ot the President who was at the head of the Govern ment that prevented Gen Gordi n and his associates from destroyin nt are lauded there is a vigorous protest and a strong denunciation utPhis action at New Orleans iiis- o both unnessary and unwise for iiit- shows that the era of good will and fraternity is not as deep and last ing as the South at times would have the North believe it is rIt must not be forgotten that the designatedetwo special d iys each year for specialeffort on the part of churches Sunday schools and friends iiin the interest of State University March 4th is Charter Day and off this proper notices have been mailed to the churches and S S o the State and should the appeals have failed to reach the proper person by any cause this notice- t should suffice and an offering be raised next Sunday for the Educational work President Puree ad vises us that the money gathered on the shot c of Lake Gennesaret He sat in a boat far enough from the shore to be se n- and heard by all After speaking so long he was weary And when even was come he saith unto them let us go over unto the other sideIn this way he coul escape from the multitudes that thronged him and have a night off rest And leaving the multitude they take him with them een as he was in the boatThat is he rowed of without going on shore As the Lord finished his speaking they started And other boats were with himThe boats on the lake had gathered round where they could hear him as he sat in his boatt and when they started across the sea they went also It would seem that there were quite a number these Thus the miracle of quiet ing the storm had many witnesses besides the disciples who were with him And there arose a gret storm of wind Very sudden and very severe storms of wind were frequent on this sea That this was one oi unusual strength is shown by the way in which the evangelists speak of it Matthew uses a word whic generally refers to an earthquake showing the storm was so great if made the earth seem to tremble And the waves beat into the boat insomuch that the boat was now filling l Luke tells us they were in jeopardy Luke 823 And he was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow The cushion which was on the low bench used ffir a scat He was lying iin the bottom of the boat with his head on this VVcarricd by the long days work he was sleeping soundly undisturbed by the storm Master carest thou not that we perish These men were fisher men from their youth and familiar with this sea which was noted for iits tierce storms That they were frightened shows the unusual sever ity of the storm There is rude impatience in this question to their Lord there is rebuke to him in the words Hence it seems natural to suppose that Peter who persumed upon another occassion to rebuke him was the spokesman now They had some faith they thnught he could do something if he were awake But they have gone calmly on a their work of trying to outride the storm trusting in God They ought to have felt that there was no suler place on earthor in heaven than this boat where the Son lay sleeping As brave men even iiff they had been alone they ought to have faced death calmly but the words Used in the various accounts show that they were frightened We cannot throw the first
