NATIONAL NEGRO BUSINESS LEAGUE NASHVILLE TENN The fourth annual meeting oi the Na tionar Business League was held here during last week Wednesday Thursday and Friday August 19 20 auQ21 The most representative gatheringof Negroes ever assembled in tills country has been bequestsi of the good people of this city The delegates oame with enthusiasm mid brdught with them a hopefulness whiob has been com 1uulcted to alt1tbo u ave come in contact with them The meeting was held in the Hall of the House of representatives State Cap- itoli Building under circumstances of the snout favorable and satisfactory char actor The attendance was the largest in history of the League and what is more iuipirtant the men who composed It and who have ben btre are of that strong sturdy character to be found thionRb int the country interesUd in the effort to build up the Negro people The addresses have been strong and practical ones and have been both interesting slid instructive It is the general cobrwnsus of opinion that the League baa more than vindicat ed the wisdom of its organization and IofthecopftdenceI t The Initial session was mado doubly suspicious not only through the high character of those assembled but as Wellr as by the addn ssesqf welcome delivered by the Mnyorelrct of the city the Presi dent of the Chamber of Commerce and by the President of the Retail Merchants AHcociatlou Each of these gentlemen spoke In hit official capacity and in a vein not pat ronizing but manly courageous and helpful There could be no di nbt of the ringing note of sincerely in what they had to say There welcome was no less nearly than that extended on behalf ofI the various Negro Organization of the cIty Every session of the Lrague was attended by great Cowds of perrons white and blackwho throng d not only the ball where the meetings were held but the lobby and corrjdors leading the ballas welL Of especial interest was the disposi tion manifested by the NafhUHe news papers to prove their concern In the meeting It was a remarkable fact that the Nashville newspapers the Nashville Banner the Nashville American arid the Nashville News carried from six to eight columns ofrnatterduringeach days session anti their reports were courteous respectful and enthusiastic No such news oervioe has ever been given any Negro gathering in the country Easily of coune and to be expectedI Hooker T Washington he Presideatof the League was the crntr of attraction It has been worth much to note that the substantial elements of the race are so thoroughly in accord with this man Ou the evening of the FirstI session as a special mark of distinction Dr B C Morris President of the National Baptist Convention the largest organization of Negroes Jn the country and himself a man of large business interests offered a motion suspending the rules of the League and reelectingI anntherIyear The motion was warmly second hvillelandI Themdtlonwas unanimously carriedI by a rising Vote and with a whoop As a further mark of their admira tion for Mr Washington the rules were again suspended on the last days session when life members were en rolling and Mr Washington made a life member of the League withoutI paying the fee of twentY five dollars required of others The Committee on Resolutions re poxted through T Thomas Fortun of New for theJersey commit b as strong a statement of full e tile time the order in t- I iT- SPEEDV trials and prompt pun ishment as has been suggested S might lessen the number of lynch f iings and might lessen the nameless 1 crimes usually advanced as the rEa- son for mob violence but it would iharly reach that end A recent I speedy trial in Alabama resulted in the conviction of the wrong man- 0 and he would have been legally hung had not a friend in another state come to his rescue and proved an alibi and convinced the Gov ernor of his innpcencte Color- prejudice had much to do with this conviction and would have muchS I Ito do with many other convictions under exactly the same circumstan ces and conditions Vhat is most needed is the removal of the senti ment which has approved and sanc tio d mob violence and the culti vation of a sentiment in favor of law and order When this is done there will bj prompt trials and just punishment for all offences com mitted against society That man who violates the chastity of a woman is a brute without regard to the color of the victim or the color of the transgressor and shouldre ceive the severest penalty of the law but that punishment should be administered under the forms of the i law and not by infuriated mobs This paper has given the weight of f its influence and example for twen tyfive years to suppressing crime and elevating the people to higher standards of life and condemnsA wrongdoing among the pejple but despite his the laxity of the law the license to do wrong and a wide open city has done more to debauch and degrade our people than any thing else The teaching and noble example
