Fred Merkle of the New York Nationals. (Fred Merkle or Frederick Charles Merkle (1888-1956). Color portrait of Fred Merkle with the New York Giants. Verso: An 'NY' is in the top left corner and 'Giants' is in the top right. Fred Merkle. Fred Merkle, once substitute and now regular first baseman for the Giants, first played ball with the smaller independent and semi-professional teams of the middle West. Eventually signing with the Tecumseh Club he became one of the best players in the Southern Michigan Association, and was secured by the New York Nationals. His playing has steadily improved, and the records show that he is developing into the ideal first baseman, who must be a top notch fielder and extra hard hitter. Includes statistics for 1909 and 1910. Base Ball Series 400 Designs. Piedmont. The Cigarette of Quality. Factory No. 25, 2d Dist.
