Charles Albert Bender, the famous Indian pitcher of the Philadelphia Athletics, learned base ball at Carlisle. In 1903 he was signed by the Athletics. His pitching for them has steadily improved, and in 1910 he led the twirlers of the American League. In the 250 innings he worked he allowed 182 hits and 83 home runs, and struck out 155 men.
