Original order maintained where possible. Where not possible, the collection has been arranged for use. Please note that most of the materials were purchased at auctions or at other like venues, thus, the provenance of the individual collections, for the most part, is destroyed. The order in which the collection, as a whole, arrived at the Society is the only remaining vehicle that gives any meaning to the arrangement. The collection is organized into five series: Diverse Records and Publications; African American Records; Photographs; Postcards; Oversized Materials. However, in spite of it being an artificial collection, the original order of the collection was maintained as closely as possible and the donated documents were housed in folders and then in boxes with general series headings applied afterward. Since much of the materials found in the collection were acquired at estate sales, garage sales, etc., the processors tried to maintain the integrity of the subject matter, in spite of format differences, in order to keep any intrinsic collection groups together. The only rearrangement came in the grouping of like formats, i.e. photographs, postcards, etc. Wade Hall is an oral historian and professor emeritus of English at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky. He has been the long-time editor of the Kentucky Poetry Review and has written extensively on southern literature and history. Hall holds degrees from Troy State University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Illinois. He is a well-known collector of southern and Ohio Valley memorabilia, especially that of Kentuckiana. This is an artificial collection of books, pamphlets, papers, documents, photographs, postcards, and other ephemera collected by Wade Hall. Included in the collection are: an 1814 petition from Knox Co. suing for damages from the Federal Government, company papers of various business from 1853 to 1925, a turn-of-the century advertisement printed in German, an 1895 Washington Co. Grand Jury list, and Ku Klux Klan documents. Additionally there is much information concerning various Kentucky (especially Louisville) high schools and colleges, a number of pamphlets about Louisville, and a great deal of religious records. However, the main outstanding group of records contained in the collection are the varied and different "African American" papers. Not only are religious records, educational records, and secular publications included in this sub-set, but also, agricultural fair records, slave records, African American Civil Liberty and Women's Club publications, Pullman Co. publications, and a program for a 1940 Louisville, KY baseball game between the Homestead Grays and the Cuban All-Stars. There are also numerous African American photographs. Related Material The KHS Library has 5 books authored by Wade Hall. These are: Greetings from Kentucky: a Post Card Tour, 1900-1950 .
