Series I Family History contains biographical and genealogical information about Chescheir and his family. It also includes two folder of literary works by Chescheir. Series II Correspondence has two (2) sub-series: 1. Personal correspondence, which includes family letters, POW letters, and letters from Sister Mary Alfreda, and business correspondence, and 2. Military correspondence. Series III Photographs has two (2) sub-series, which include, 1. Personal and business photographs, and 2. Military photographs. Series IV Ephemera has six (6) sub-series, which include, 1. Diaries/Memo Books, 2. Pamphlets, 3. Newspapers, 4. Awards, certificates and promotions, 5. Books and notebooks, and 6. Phonograph records. The last series, Series V, contains Maps and Artifacts that have either remained in the KHS Museums or have been transferred from the Manuscript Archives to the Museums or to the Map Archives. George Maynard Chescheir was born on August 23, 1889 in Springfield, Ky. He attended Louisville public schools, and graduated from Louisville's Male High School in 1908. He married Elizabeth Owsley Booker in 1917. They had four children, George M., Jr., William Booker, Thomas Russell, and Elizabeth Lewis Chescheir. Chescheir enlisted in the 1st Ky. Infantry, National Guard in 1911 and became an agent of the New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. in 1922.While in the National Guard Chescheir participated in the Mexican Border skirmish of 1916-1917 first as a 1st Lieutenant and then as a Captain in command of a machine-gun company. During WWI in France (1917-1918) he commanded Battery F of the 138th Field Artillery, U.S., and was discharged in 1919. After the war's end the National Guard was reorganized and Chescheir was made first Major of the 1st Battalion and then Lt. Colonel and executive officer of the 138th Field Artillery, National Guard of the U.S.During the Depression the National Guard and Chescheir participated in the flood relief given to victims of the 1937 flood and other public service based missions. Chescheir also served in a semi-official capacity as an emissary between the state and visiting dignitaries. On one instance he served as liaison between Governor Flem Sampson and the Dreiser Committee, a committee of private, if famous, citizens that came to Kentucky to discover the truth about violence in the Eastern Kentucky coal fields. (See KHS Special Collection number 97SC159).At the advent of WWII Chescheir was promoted to full Colonel of the 138th Field Artillery. During this war the National Guard units were attached to regular Army divisions. Col. Chescheir was made Commanding Officer of the Prisoner of War Camps in the Southeast United States. His headquarters were at Ft. Benning, Ga.Soon after WWII was over, Col. Chescheir retired from his military command and returned to Louisville, Ky. After he retired from active duty, Chescheir remained active in state and national military affairs and served as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. He also continued his professional activities in the insurance community and was known statewide as a leader of many civic and charitable organizations. Chescheir died November 13, 1971 in Louisville, Ky. This collection contains the military, business, and family records of George M. Chescheir, Sr. and his immediate family. Found within the records are military correspondence from 1916-1946 that include accounts of daily military life during the 1916 Mexican Border Skirmish, WWI, and WWII. Also included is correspondence from 1914-1964 concerning the insurance business and an early-20th century endeavor of Chescheir's to sell electric automobiles. Personal correspondence found in this collections includes letters among various Booker family members; Chescheir writing to his parents, wife, and children; letters from former POW's; and a series of letters from Sister Mary Alfreda (a family member of one of the POW's).Photographs make up a great majority of the collection and include: photos on the United States Army's punitive expedition into Mexico in 1916; WWI; pre WWII and WWII photos, especially of POW's and of the POW camps; and post WWII as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army. The business photographs pertain mostly to Chescheir's interest in electric automobiles. The family photos include glass plate negatives of the Booker family; Chescheir family albums; and photos of Chescheir, his wife, sons, and daughter.The ephemera found in the collection include: newspapers from 1917-1969, phonograph records of an Italian language course and the 1944 Christmas program held by German POW's. There are vintage WWII pamphlets from the Army on travel and training, and on qualification scores; WWI vintage pamphlets; personal travel guides published in 1918 by Ford; sermons, bank books, membership cards, pocket notebooks, and a copper plate for printing calling cards. Lastly, the collection contained some maps of Ft. Knox, Ky and some artifacts.
