This two item collection consists of a January 12, 1847, petition and an October 8, 1881 letter. The petition was written to the president on behalf of Cassius M. Clay; the signees were trying to secure a military appointment, at the rank of Colonel, for Clay. The petition was signed by Samuel Swope, C. M. Ballard, and Gaberial C. Slaughter, among others. The second item is a letter written ot Mrs. C. Bush of the Kentucky Historical Society. The document requested that the circulars be printed containing an oratory Clay had written. Clay then continues that it was his understanding that the fees would be waived because of his donations to the society. Arrangement: Chronological.
