Two promissory notes written by Alexander Jeffery just prior to the Civil War. Each note, one on December 27, 1858 and the other on December 25, 1860, pertains to the hiring of "Negro girls" from their owners. Each note discusses payment amounts, medical and clothing obligations, and promises to treat them well.
