Crittenden, a prominent Kentucky statesman, and Hamilton Fish, a New York statesman, served in the United States Senate during the 1850s. They both worked to preserve the Union. James McHenry was the fourth choice for the position of Secretary of War in 1796. He received the position and won the President's esteem in cabinet meetings. He used his influence in the patronage system. The six items in this collection were brought together by Charles Haskell. He collected letters written by John J. Crittenden, Hamilton Fish, and James McHenry. The letters discuss various political activities, dinner invitations, and payment vouchers. The two other items in the collection are certificates. One is a certificate of military appointment issued by the State of Pennsylvania to Robert Bayne. The other is a Port of Boston Certificate of import for the "American vessel the Betsy Brown."
