[Identification of item], Joseph Wood Ledger, 1819-1844 (Bulk: 1819-1825), 95SC48,Library Special Collections and Archives, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort. This ledger was passed through the Wood family to Mr. Lewis Emerson Wood of Leavenworth, KS, and Baylor University, Waco, TX. On his death the book passed to his wife, Mrs. Veva (Boeke) Wood, who gave it to her nephew, the donor. Limited family history is included with the ledger. This ledger consists of two parts. The first part is the ledger of balance sheets, both in and out, for various transactions. This part of the ledger seems to suggest that Wood acted as a factor, or middleman, who brokered the selling of agricultural crops and livestock, and the purchase of textile goods and some staple items, such as coffee and sugar. Numerous pages contain promisory notes (to and from Wood), many dating into the 1830s. The second section records Wood's progress through a series of arithmetic lessons that lead up to surveying skills. At the end of this section are surveying problems for people in Gallatin Co. (Ky). Although each lesson is dated, many pages are missing from both the front and back of this part of the ledger. The first lesson date recorded is February 2, 1819. The last lesson recorded is on a survey example. Part of this page is missing, but the recorded date is December 16, 1819. Arrangement: Chronological.
