Catherine Spears was born on September 6, 1760, in Rockingham County, Virginia. She was the third child of ten born to George and Christeenah Spears. George Spears, an immigrant from the Rhine River valley in Europe, became a prosperous, slave-owning planter in Virginia. Well educated himself, George made sure that all of his children could read and write in English, even his daughters. Catherine was also taught to be a weaver, and eventually she became very skilled in this craft Around 1776, Catherine married John Frye, the son of a Shenandoah Valley neighbor. Shortly after their marriage, the urge to own their own land prompted Catherine and John to migrate, along with other Shenandoah Valley neighbors, across the Appalachian Mountains into the western Virginia county of Kentucky. In about 1779, under the leadership of a long-hunter named George Carpenter and his two brothers, Adam and Conrad Carpenter, these immigrants settled in a hilly region in central Kentucky, in what is present day Casey County. This settlement, called Carpenters Station, was a stockade structure built to protect the inhabitants and their livestock from the weather and raids by natives. A few years after the erection of the station, in 1782 during the American Revolutionary War, British troops and Native Americans began to make forays into the Kentucky area with the intent of killing off the settlers or driving them back east. Numerous skirmishes between the settlers and the allies' took place over the land. The Battle at Blue Licks, Kentucky, the last battle of the war, was a result of the allies' military initiative. Unfortunately for Catherine, John Frye was one of the casualties of this battle. Widowed at the age of twenty-two, mother of one daughter and pregnant with a son, Catherine was left on her own. Although she managed to take care of her children and even increase her land holdings, being a widow on the frontier was a very difficult life. After two years, in 1784, Catherine remarried. Her second husband was Adam Carpenter, one of the founders of the station. Adam, along with his brothers, had extensive land holdings from land grants for service in the French and Indian War. Eventually, their holdings would increase through purchased land grants from those veterans who decided not to move into Kentucky. In all, the Carpenter's had control over close to 5,000 acres. Adam and Catherine made their home in a valley along Frye Creek, a few mile southwest of the station. While Adam was busy with family affairs, administering the estates of deceased friends and family, and acting as guardian for minor heirs, Catherine was busy bearing ten more children to Adam and managing their household. The children all lived, the family prospered, and life, in general, went well until 1806 when Adam died. Once again, at the age of forty-six, Catherine became a widow, only this time she had nine minor children under the age of eighteen to care for. Catherine inherited a widow's one-third of the estate, the remainder was divided among Adam's children. Besides inheriting 667 acres of land and various farm animals and tools, Catherine also retained possession of a slave boy named Joseph. This slave remained with Catherine the rest of her life, eventually becoming the supervisor of her plantation. Catherine did not marry a third time. She remained a widow until her death in 1848, at the age of eighty-seven. Shortly after Adam's death Catherine began buying land, an action that led to her becoming a well-to-do woman. First she purchased 195 acres in Adair County, then another 200 acres in Green County. Additionally, in order to keep her land intact, if one of her children migrated westward, Catherine bought back the land that the child had inherited from Adam's estate. Catherine began distilling whiskey as one source of income and raising cattle as another. She also began to lend money to family members and friends. At one point she lent money to her brother-in-law Conrad, and she even lent money to John and Simon Kenton. Eventually, Catherine took all those indebted to her to court in order to get the loans repaid in full. As her property holdings increased her need for labor also increased and she began to purchase slaves. She did not, however, sell slaves. At the time of her death, Catherine owned twenty "negroes," including Joseph, the slave she inherited from her husband's estate. Although Catherine was a slave owner, the idea of slavery does not seem to have sat comfortably with her. A well-educated woman, Catherine seems to have been aware of the social debates raging on the issue and was definitely a supporter of the American Colonization Society's efforts. In her will that disposed of her property upon her death, she listed twenty articles of which the first eight articles dealt, not with her children, but with the disposition of her slaves. Articles One through Three, Seven and Eight freed and provided for her elderly slave Joseph. Article Four described provisions for her other slaves to earn money for freedom and passage to Liberia. Article Five clearly stated that Catherine wished to free all of her slaves, but emancipated only the children of freed slaves. Still, for all her good intentions, Catherine seemed to be uneasy with the idea of freedmen in Kentucky. In Article Six, if a slave refused to go to Liberia, she made provisions for that slave to be sold with the proceeds divided among her heirs. It seems that Catherine believed that freed slaves should be returned to Africa, those remaining in the United States should continue in slavery. The Carpenter land and businesses were run by George "Red-Face" Carpenter, after his mother's death in 1848. George "Red-Face" married Rachel Wilson Jones in 1849, shortly after Catherine died, and produced his own family. He and Rachel had seven children, five of which reached adulthood. Rachel died in 1865 leaving George a widower at the age of 68. His eldest son, A.W. (Adam Wilson) Carpenter, became the executor of George's estate upon his death in 1877 at the age of eighty. A.W. was also named the guardian for the three youngest siblings. A.W. married Maggie Lee Cloyd in 1873. She died shortly after giving birth to their son, George Lee, in 1874. A.W. Carpenter then married Lizzie Turner in 1879 and they had seven children, two of which died in infancy. Even though A.W. remarried, the Carpenter's and Cloyd's remained very close. A.W. Carpenter was one of the most successful men in Casey Co. however he opposed the use of tobacco and refused to grow it on his farm. He was also an advocate of Prohibition and was a Prohibition nominee for Congress from his district. A.W. Carpenter died in 1928, Lizzie died in 1929. This collection contains the papers of the Carpenter family of Casey County. Most of the documents pertain to the life and business affairs of Catherine Spears Frye Carpenter and her son George "Red-Face" Carpenter. Additionally, there are many documents from A.W. Carpenter and B.F. Turner. Included in the collection are deeds, wills and estate lists, correspondence (personal and business), weaving patterns, surveys, indentures, receipts, court orders and other legal documents, bills of sale, distilling recipes, notices, vouchers, journals, medical accounts and cures, school memorabilia, maps, newspaper clippings, architectural plans and instructions, and photographs. Also included is information printed by Lou Tate at the Little Loom House concerning Catherine's weaving patterns. The collection also contains a deed signed by Gabriel Slaughter, documents of a court case involving Simon Kenton, and documents concerning the Stanford and Milledgeville Turnpike.
