Lindsey was born at Newport, Kentucky in 1807. He attended private schools in Newport and Cincinnati [Ohio College. As a young man, he took part in the survey of the Wabash Canal. In 1827 he was appointed deputy sheriff of Campbell County by his father, John Brown Lindsey, and reappointed the succeeding year by his uncle, James Gardiner Lindsey. He studied law with Richard Southgate of Newport and received his license to practice in 1830. Lindsey moved to Frankfort in 1834 and later that year married Isabella Price Weisiger (1809-1852), daughter of Daniel Weisiger, who owned and managed the Weisiger House inn. Lindsey became Weisiger's partner and successor in the inn from 1834 to 1841. When the inn was sold, he became a law partner of O.G. Cates. Lindsey's later political career included election as Commonwealth Attorney for the Federal District, service in the state constitutional convention of 1850, and terms in both houses of the Kentucky General Assembly in the 1850s. He later became a director in the Branch Bank of Kentucky and president of the Farmers Bank in Frankfort. Lindsey was mayor pro tem of Frankfort in 1862 when Confederate troops occupied the town. After the death of Isabella, Lindsey married Louisa M. Applegate (1808-1873). Lindsey died in 1877. This collection contains legal papers and other documents pertaining to the Lindsey family of Frankfort, Kentucky. Many of the papers relate to Thomas Noble Lindsey. Included is a November, 1866 letter written in Frankfort to Governor Thomas E. Bramlette concerning a claim for damages suffered in a raid by the men of John Hunt Morgan in theCivil War. The writer of this letter is unidentified. Another letter, dated 1861 and relating to an estate claim, came from the Swiss consul, Theodore Schwartz, in Louisville. The collection contains an undated but apparently post-war political statement criticizing Reconstruction restrictions on the political activity of ex-Confederates. Also present is a broadside or sign announcing an public assignee's sale in Frankfort in March, 1875. An undated map may relate to an 1836 survey present. The survey was made for J. Swigert in Franklin County, and the map bears the surnames of Harlan, Swigert, and Keenan, as well as depictions of a toll gate and the Louisville and Frankfort Turnpike. There are also receipts issued in 1874 for vegetables and "corn beef" purchased from the Kentucky Penitentiary in Frankfort. The collection may also contain papers of John B.
