Murray Papers, 1806-1898, 91M09,Library Special Collections and Archives, Kentucky Historical Society, Frankfort. This collection contains correspondence, receipts, bills, notes, materials relating to sheriffs' sales, work reports, and telegrams relating to James A. Murray, members of the Murray family, and members of the Brawner family, all of whom apparently resided in central Kentucky. The papers concern agriculture, livestock, and local improvements, including construction on the Lexington and Frankfort Railroad, among other subjects. Noteworthy items include an 1839 letter relating to the hiring of laborers (probably slaves) by R.A. Brawner; a fragment concerning a committee charged by the city of Frankfort with the building of cisterns; a fifty-cent certificate issued in 1837 for the Danville-Nicholasville Turnpike Road; and a "Check Roll for Men Employed on the Frankfort and Lexington Railroad by H.H. Murray April 4, 1843." There is also a funeral notice for a service in 1847 for Mary Lee at the Presbyterian church, which would commence "at the ringing of the bell." An undated printed document is a list of membership of the "Friends of Emancipation In Kentucky." There are also a few small account books and an unspecified subscription list. A letter to J.E. Brawner from Dabney Todd, undated, spoke of Todd's desire to buy a cow, asking if Brawner knew if one was for sale, its age, and the amount of milk it gave. Todd asked for a return letter or requested Brawner "leave word with the ferryman." Arrangement: The correspondence is arranged chronologically. The remainder of the collection is arranged by provenance.
