Director's records Record Group 197 Accession 85-1 Upon his retirement as executive director in December, 1984, Harold Schaars chose important reports, correspondence, studies, and manuals from his era (1965-1984) and before for transfer to the University of Louisville Archives to augment earlier archives of the agency. The records date from 1932 through 1975, but most are from the 1960s and early 1970s. Many of the photographs appear to be re-enactments of situations which have already occured. Counseling sessions in progress is also a main point of interest in the photographs. The usual photographs of luncheons, speakers presentations crop up repeatedly. 20 (FOLDER titled) "Childrens' Agency Photographs" (originally in BOX 23) -10 (8'x10') prints -1 (4'x5') print All of the photographs are of children with their mothers or with a grandmotherly woman. One photograph is dated on the back May 23, 1930. This shows doctors examining a child at a newly opened clinic at the agency. 20 (FOLDER titled) "1950-60's Photos (BOX 20) -8 prints ranging in size from 6 'x9' to 8'x10'. The first executive director of the newly merged Family & Children's agency discusses his efforts to unify the two staffs and boards and changes in the agency's program during his tenure, 1959-65. 20 Esther M. Bookkeeper and comptroller of Family Service Organization and Family & Children's Agency (1922-1969) describes four directors she served, business aspects of the agencies, the merger, relief-giving in the 1930s. Caseworker for Children's Agency and FSO, who was Casework Supervisor when she retired in 1973, discusses evolution of social work since the 1930s, both agencies and the difficulties of the merger in 1959, as well as the styles and personalities of several directors and board members, and also her experiences with social workers' intolerance of working mothers in the 1940s and 1950s when her children were young. 20 Helen Laird, December 1, 1981, 1982-76.
