[Identification of item], John Russell Butler (1823-1884) diaries, 1866, 1870, University Archives and Records Center, University of Louisville, Louisville. History The diaries of John Russell Butler, dated 1866 and 1870, describe his management of Redwood, his estate near the Forks of the Elkhorn in Franklin County, Kentucky. Details on planting and harvesting crops, livestock management, horse breeding, and farm workers are included as well as information on the weather and family and social life. Butler, a native of Shelby County, Kentucky, studied medicine at the University of Louisville. He served in the Mexican-American War as a private and later as an officer on the staff of his uncle, Major General William Orlando Butler. Butler married Jane Short, daughter of prominent botanist Charles Wilkens Short. Butler practiced medicine briefly in Louisville before moving to Franklin County, Kentucky. Following service in the Confederate Army in the Civil War, Butler returned to Franklin County but sold his estate in 1870 and moved to Louisville again. He died there in 1884. The microfilm allows research access to the diaries which remain in private hands.
