[Identification of item], Juniper Club Records, 1909-1993, University Archives and Records Center, University of Louisville, Louisville. Organizational history Juniper Club, a private organization based in Louisville, Kentucky, dates back to 1897 when a group of Louisville men were invited to hunt and fish together as the guests of the Jessamine Hunting Club (Jessamine County, Kentucky). Organized as the Gregory Hunting Club from 1903-1908, the group incorporated as the Juniper Hunting Club in 1909 when they purchased land in central Florida on Lake George (a widening of the St. Johns River), near Astor. The club sponsors various "camps" at its property for members and their guests throughout the year. An on-site caretaker/manager cares for the property and the lodge located there. Founded by thirty-four influential and well-known Louisville business and professional men, Juniper Club has grown over the years to more than sixty members, many of whom are sons and grandsons of earlier members. The oganization, which remains open to males only, also has weekly dinner meetings at the Pendennis Club in Louisville to conduct the club's business. Members of the Juniper Club have included such well-known Louisville personalities as: Judge James P. Gregory; Judge Walter Lincoln; Judge Robert Worth Bingham; Episcopal Bishop Charles E. Woodcock; surgeon Dr. Irvin Abell; university president Dr. Philip Davidson; and architects Brinton Davis and Hugh Nevin. Other prominent members from outside Kentucky have included: Dr. Hugh H. Young of Johns-Hopkins Medical School in Baltimore, Maryland; Col. Clayton E. Wheat of West Point Military Academy in New York; and attorney Pendleton Beckley of Paris, France. The papers in this collection date from 1909 to 1993, with some reference to property ownership dating back into the 1800s. The records document the activities and property ownership of the Juniper Club and its predecessor, the Juniper Hunting Club, as well as two adjunct organizations; the Juniper Realty Company and the Juniper Land Company. These materials tell the story of how one group of men (and later their wives and families) chose to relax and retreat from their hectic business and professional lives. The collection is divided into eight series. The first four series; Legal Records, Organizational Records, Membership Records, and Publications, provide a full picture of the history of the organization from its inception in 1909 to the present, with the bulk of the materials being representative of the years 1930 - 1984. Series 5 - 7 are more eclectic and include printed materials, photographs, and an oral history collection. A few artifacts make up Series 8. Container List 1.
