Hassold (1896-1987) Papers, 1988-21, University Archives and Records Center, University of Louisville, Louisville. Ernest Christopher Hassold, born in Corunna, Indiana in 1896, was a professor at the University of Louisville from 1927 until 1966. During those years he served as chair of the English Department and head of the Division of Humanities, a position he helped create. These three boxes contain mostly papers, addresses and reports written by Hassold during his years at the university. This includes reports Hassold wrote for the American Council of Learned Societies and the Office of Military Government for Germany; conference papers for the Modern Language Association; research materials and papers on Hermann Brock; and research materials and papers on the history of U of L, the U of L English Department and the U of L Humanities Division. In fact, the most interesting folders are Hassold's Brock research and his university history papers. His personal papers and publications, including copies of published articles and his dissertation are in Box 1. Also included are early written work such as articles he published in his college newspaper in Concordia Indiana and papers he wrote as a graduate student in English at the University of Chicago. Several folders contain letters, many containing responses to Hassold's published articles, from 1940-1970. There is also a copy of Hassold's vitae and biographical forms for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Reel-to-reel tapes of a few lectures are in Box 2. And class and research materials are in Box 3.
