Gamble provided supplies, transportation, and the salary for one nurse in order to test birth control methods for rural women who did not have access to full time clinics or physicians. Traveling by jeep or on horseback, this nurse, Lena Gilliam, reached some 500 families in Madison, Jackson, and Rockcastle Counties. The work of delivering babies and instructing families in child-spacing continued primarily through this nursing field work and under the direction of Dr. Louise Hutchins, wife of Berea President Francis S. Hutchins. In 1944 a clinic was established at the Berea College Hospital and in 1945 the League became an affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Mountain Maternal Health League continued its mission of education and health care by serving eight counties and over 5,000 persons per year. The eight counties were Estill, Garrard, Jackson, Lincoln, Madison, Powell, Rockcastle, and Whitley. These include correspondence; pamphlets; and publicity, administrative, and financial records relating to the work of the League, which was headquartered in Berea, Kentucky.
