Dame Judith Anderson are the normal stars of the film titled A Man torse wnicj is playing at Lowes O r p h e u m and al ¬ though a lady named Dorothy Gordon is listed as the author of the original story and a couple of gentlemen named Sandy Howard and Elliot Sllverstein are respectively the producer and director the names to watch for are those of several other people also connected with this new movie The consultant on Indian music and dance Is somebody named Lloyd One Star the consultant on the language of the Sioux tribe of the Northwest is a lady named Olive Pretty Bird and among others taking part are such listings as Edward Little Sky Iron Eves Cody Richard Fools Bull Ben Eagle Man Ben Man and Manou Tupou The last named is actually that Fiji Islander who played Sitting Bull in Arthur Kopits drama Indians IndiansFrom From all of which you may gather that A Man Called Horse Slo lias something to do with Indians and of course youll be perfectly right It not only has something to do with Indians it has everything to do with Indians particularly Sioux Indians Their customs their lifestyle their rituals and religion and for the plot structure on which an otherwise ethnic or anthropo ¬ logical study is transformed into fiction how a captured Englishman with yellow hair almost becomes a Sioux Indian him self For one thing it may well dispel the myths of both the Noble Red Man and the warwhooping Indians circling around the wagon trains in our customary Westerns And for another it is right in line with the growing awareness of what kind of people the Indians really were and why so many people have suddenly developed an interest in their plight plightBut But on Its surface A Man Called Horse is hardly more than a straightforward un ¬ adorned adventure story told almost in terms of a history lesson for children of what that yellowhaired blueeyed English aristocrat went through during his period of captivity by the Sioux Put under the New York Screen Review dominance of a grayhaired shrill scream ¬ ing squaw tied to a stake outside her tepee and forced to work for her as a beast of burden In fact a horse lie is beaten tor ¬ tured subjected to all sorts of Indignities and harassment It is only when he proves himself a man of courage and bravery in a brief skirmish the Sioux tribe has with its ancient enemies the Shoshones that he is finally accepted as a man And wliieri he falls in love with and wants to marry the sister of the tribal chieftain he has to un ¬ dergo even more torture some ofit pretty grisly in its exposition to prove himself worthy of her herAs As that captive Englishman Harris goes through his assignment with a permanent crease of puzzlement on his brow and an almost continual open mouth trying to understand whats happening to him And as that old squaw who screams at him and beats him with a big stick Dame Judith looks like nothing so much as one of the Witches of Endor let loose in the Cana ¬ dian Northwest Theres a girl named Cor inna Tsopei as a nubile Indian maid even to nude appearances in her rituals as a bride and theres a newcomer a Canadian actor named Jean Gascon as a halfbreed IndianFrenchman with a Canuck accent frenzied giggle and a gameleg resulting from being cut down when he had at ¬ tempted to escape escapeIts Its all very picturesque and maybe even educational and no doubt A Man Called Horse will play a large part In advancing the cause of Indian recognition but its difficult to take it very seriously That tribal torture in which Harris Is suspended from ropes attached to animal claws pierced into his chest or the description by the halfbreed of how the Indians cut the ligaments In his legs to prevent any fur ¬ ther attempts at escape even the tying up of the Englishman to that stake and the beatings he suffers seem to be authen ¬ tic enough for a sociological treatise on Indian customs but somehow also appear to have been thrown into the movie more sfor shock value than anything else Or to put it lri lriother other words it may be very true but its hard to believe Personally I place my faith in the Noble Red Man and I find those war whooping Indians galloping around the wagon train much more excit ¬ ing Its very difficult to destroy a myth Backstage/Off Screen Bob Mann BACKSTAGEOFF SCREEN By Bob Mann NEW YORK May 4 The Repertory Theater
