Page 3 Recapitulation: Little Fitz Scores Front-Running Win ■ ' 4 ♦ Recapitulation Little Fitz Scores Front-Running Win Clips Fifth Second Off Track Mark in Louisville Handicap At Downs; Wood lawn Second CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 16. — Clipping a fifth of a second off Bornastar's track record for the mile and one-sixteenth distance, John C. Hauer's Little Fitz registered a front-running victory in the $11,275 Louisville Handicap before 20,100 fans here Saturday afternoon. Lesser honors found Mrs. William H. Veeneman's Woodlawn getting up in the final stride to take place m ney finishing two lengths short of the winner and a head before C. V. Whitney's Bug Brush, who was highweighted under 121 pounds and the choice at odds of 3 to 5. Little Fitz, ably handled by William A. Peake, raced the mile and one-sixteenth in a devastating in 1:42%, under 118 pounds, and returned $11.80, while taking down the winner's net prize of $7,203. At the start it was Little Fitz and Bug Brush away as a team, the latter along the rail, and maintaining the status quo for nearly a quarter mile as the seven-horse field curved around the clubhouse turn. Just prior to entering the backstretch Bug Brush's rider, Braulio Baeza, elected to get the mare off the torrid pace, the opening quarter in :223/5, and reserve her for a run through the stretch. Bug Brush Runs Third Under ordinary circumstances this would l have proved a wise decision but Saturday it was fatal as Little Fitz would not give up and continued to reel off swift fractional times. For a moment at the head of the stretch it appeared Bug Brush would run past the altered five-year-old son of Crafty Admiral as she was eased to the outside and edged up closely. However all that the winner required to get rid of her was to be given his head anc by the eighth pole the job was done and it was evident that he was not to be denied. Through that closing furlong it was a stiff duel between Woodlawn and Bug Brush with the former asserting herself in the closing stride. For the remainder, with the exception of the fourth horse Dru Away, it was no contest as they were strung out to the rear. Dru Away, with the exception of the winner, was the lone member of the field doing any real running through the stretch as this aged gelding had charged up from last place to finish just over two lengths short for all of it. Six-Length Winner at Raceway Park Royston, Meeting's Leading Rider, Registers 31st Victory ' By DON GRISHAM Staff Correspondent RACEWAY PARK, Toledo, Ohio, May J 16. — After a frustrating four seconds and a third in eight outings here. Mr. M. P. found a field he could measure and ran off to a six-length score. The Detroit-owned gelding is the property of the H. K. C. Stable, which is the nom de course of hockey player Gordie Howe, baseball's Al Kaline and business man Joe Candella. Hr. M. P. rushed to command after a quarter of a mile and opened up a long lead while still under restraint and coasted home easily. The meeting's leading rider, Ray Royston, piloted the son of General Don — Dont , Disturb. They handled the 6 panels in 1 : 16 and Mr. M. P. paid $5.00 as the favorite. The success was the thirty-first ' ' here for the Toledo reinsman. Owner-trainer D. W. Karcher opened the final full week of racing at this course when he dispatched the first-timer, Roman Joe, to garner laurels in the first race. The dark brown juvenile made every pole a winning one in hanging up :44% for the 130 feet leSs than a half mile. Somewhat disregarded by a crowd of 3,369, he refunded I $14.20. The well-trained youngster showed no signs of greenness as he bounded to the lead an instant after starter Matt Anderson pulled the switch. Approaching the quarter pole, apprentice Harry Hardy roused him slightly to ward off a mild challenge from F. G. Boudreau's Fonoa View, then put away his stick until safely around the stretch turn. Hardy flicked the victor several times and he responded well through the stretch though tiring somewhat the final sixteenth. The Paulding, Ohio, trainer, E. H. Y., May 16.— Sword Dancer and Bald Eagle, the main stalwarts of the handicap ranks, headed the work tabs over the week end. Both racers appear to be in tip-top form and their coming engagement in the $100,000 added Metropolitan Mile on Memorial Day, May 30, is generating more interest than the Johannsen-Paterson tile re-match. Trainer Elliott Burch had last year's kingpin, Swcrd Dancer van over to Aqueduct along with his statemate Sailor's Vision on Sunday and worked the "Brook -meade belter" 5 furlongs in 1:02%. Burch did not ask too much of the son of Sun-glow — Highland Fling, by By Jimminy for any of his speed and the colt responded with fractions of :26 for the first quarter mile, :38 for 3 furlongs and was timed in j :50% for the half mile. Sword Dancer's return to peak form after a lukewarm Florida campaign, he was the old "Dancer" capturing the Grey Lag Handicap with his familiar late burst of power, put an abrupt end to the skeptics doubts about the colt's current physical status. Capt. Harry F. Guggenheim's Bald Eagle remained at Belmont Park for. his three-quarter drill and breezed that distance over the main track in l:144/s. Idle since his double "Hundred-Grander" wins in the Widener and Gulfstream Park 'Caps, trainer Woody Stephens' charge continues in the pink and holds his razor-sharp condition. Preps for Fashion Sailor's Vision, a highly promising juvenile daughter el Sailor — Phantasy, by Psychic bid, winner of her recent start at the meet by daylight, breezed 4 panels in : 49 as a prep for her assignment in Wednesday's Fashion Stakes. Other members of the Metropolitan eli-gibles to see action over the week end included Mrs. Ada L. Rice's Talent Show, three-quarters of a mile in the good time of 1:13 handily, while Hirsch Jacobs sent his vetefan stakes campaigner, Promised Land an. impressive 7 furlongs in 1:26 in hand. Winner of the Excelsior 'Cap, Talent Show had his speed during the work and moved in intervals of :36 the first 3 panels, :48- for the half and l:003/5 for the five-eighths idstance. Promised Land finished strong at the end of his tour and posted intervals of :36 for the 3 furlongs, :48 for a half and posted 1:13 for the 6 furlongs. Make Sail from the Cain Hoy Stable, winner of the Kentucky Oaks in her last start, was in hand as she stepped three-quarters in 1:13 while that stable's Clean Sweep down worked five-eighths from the gate in 1:01. Merrick Stable's team of John William and Hello Kitsy traveled 5 furlongs over the Aqueduct strip in l:003/5 and the former went out the 6-panel distance in 1:14. Trainer John M. Gaver had the Green-tree stable's good filly Twinkle Twinkle work 5 furlongs in 1:01% while Reginald N. Webster's Count Amber was full of run during a half mile effort in f47. Royal Anthem appears ready for a starting assignment following his three-quarters in 1:13% while Hal Price Headley's Rash Statement, a recent arrival from Kentucky, covered 7 furlongs over the Belmont main track in 1:27, handily. Trainer Mack Miller had his strong running filly Recite prep 6 furlongs in 1:14% while Pebblebrook Stable's Irish Lancer sped 4 panels in :48%. Jack Dreyfus' Derby Trial winner. Beau Purple, on the mend from the bucked shins that cost him his chance at a Derby start, breezed an easy half mile in :49 and is coming around nicely. ' J ' ' I j ! | i j j ! When the home-owned filly started running at the head of the stretch, she sprinted by some of the highly touted imports, Joy Joyce. Copper Cap, and Pawhuska Sam, who finished in that order behind Mommy's Gem. The Kemling star reached the leaders at the head of the stretch and bore in sharply, but Mommy's Gem was moving fast enough that jockey Robert Gallimore was able to hold her off of her rivals until she was clear of them. This mannerism has already cost the daughter of Royal Gem II. one victory this year through disqualification at Fonner Park and has become of major concern to trainer Orville Kemling. _ After reaching the lead a little over a furlong out, jockey Gallimore used a left-handed whip on Mommy's Gem to keep her moving out to the wire. This was the first important triumph for the Kemling sophomore and she did the trick by an impressive three lengths in 1:04^5 . Yarbo, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swenson of Eugene, Ore., won the second division of the featured Princess Handicap. Veteran rider, Mel Peterson, had the son of Domingo just off the early leaders while racing third in the field of 10. His late drive carried him to a length and a quarter triumph over these two early pacesetters, Bim and Ricci C. Yarbo covered the required 5 1'2 furlongs of the Princess, one fifth of a second faster than Mommy's Gem with a l:041/5. Beau Red, an odds-on favorite in the second half of the Saturday feature, received a round of "boos" when he returned to be unsaddled in the eighth race. The chestnut colt had been shipped to Ak-Sar-Ben from Aquedyct by his owner M. H. "Bud" Robineau and received his strong consideration in the race off of four victories this year at Gulfstream. Hialeah and Tropical Parks. Beau Red never seemed to be able to "untrack" himself and he was never better than tenth, finishing some eight lengths behind the ninth horse. The only reason that £ould be found for this poor showing by the highly regarded three-year-old was his long sojourn from New York earlier in the week. Phillips ■SH w New Jersey By William C. Phillips blew Star May 'Be Born' in Be Cautious Choquette Rides Faultlessly in Betsy Ross Cherry Hill Memory Trail for Stanley Reiser GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 16.— Unexpected developments happened so fast and from so many corners this past week end that it leaves a racing man wondering where to begin. Bally Ache selling for a king's ransom, Kilroe absenting his New York pedestal, Yes You Will continuing his soar from oblivion to fame, enthusiastic Garden State patrons breaking the per-capita barrier with their record Daily Double pool. Amidst all these happenings, the flashing victory by Joseph JA. Roebling's Be Cautious in the Betsy Ross Stakes, heralding the birth of a new star in the three-year-old filly ranks.-A euphonic admonition, but, "be cautious, be darned." Trenton, N. J. financier and industrialist' Roebling could not have been too cautious when he invested $40,000 (or more) to purchase the gray daughter of Grey Sovereign — Ibex, by Chamossaire in her native England, and she herself was all bold and brass on Saturday. A good thing for her, because anything less would have failed in the test given by Wheatley Stable's Irish Jay in the crucible of the final desperate yards. Be Cautious took on 11 of the shiftiest fillies in training in the $30,650 Betsy Ross and, with the exception of Irish Jay, there was no question as to her superiority. Jockey John Choquette rode faultlessly and he rightly commented in the winner's circle that she ran "just the way I wanted her to and did what I asked of her." Charges Out of Starting Gate This is the same affable rider whose smile never dimmed even when money dropped out of his pocket the day he was replaced as the jockey on Needles four years ago. They thought he was a slow gate boy at that time. They would not have thought so on Saturday. Choquette had Be Cautious lapped alongside Wilson and Davis Jr.'s fleet Patty's Song within the opening strides. Smoothly, he permitted the gray-black filly to take command and open a daylight lead in the stretch run, and strongly he whipped and shoved at the end to help her stave off Irish Jay. The winner ran the 6 furlongs over a normally fast track in 1:11%, just two-fifths slower than the veteran stakes-winner, Itobe, registered in the preceding race. She carried 114 pounds against 121 on Irish Jay, but this was only her second start in this country and it is reasonable to suppose she will improve as she goes on. Be Cautious comes from highly fashionable English bloodlines and she gained a reputation in her native land as a juvenile where she won three of her five races. She was unplaced in her first, and, in her only other defeat, she overcame a poor start to finish second. In her American debut at Aqueduct on May 2, she was in the thick of contention with top-grade mixed company. Also, as mentioned here prior to the Betsy Ross, she had worked brilliantly in New York and was recognized as a runner of quality along the backstretch. The whispers of her ability spread through Saturday's gathering of 38,169 and she consequently went off as fourth choice, paying $19.80. Irish Jay was installed a strong 7-5 favorite and gave her supporters their money's worth in trying. The daughter of Double Jay, a runner-up for last season's divisional honors, was crowded slightly and lacked the speed to be in contention in the early stages of the Betsy Ross. She had just won the Comely'as her second start this season, but that was at 7 furlongs, and not as large a field. Down the backstretch, she had nine rivals in front of her. At the three-eighths pole, rounding the far turn, jockey Henry Moreno asked her to run and sent her veering in toward an opening next to the rail. Right Smart a Bit Too Slow Miss Mary V. Fisher's Right Smart also was racing 'toward the hole and it was her misfortune to be too slow, Irish Jay squeezing her into the fence and out of the race. It looked dangerous coming to the bulk of the field on the stretch turn and Moreno took back on the reins in order to be ready for any contingency. The tiring Patty's Song made way for here by drifting wide, and Irish Jajfc had a clear field from the three-sixteenths to the wire. She made up a little more than three lengths continuing along next to the rail, but, as Moreno later commented: "Had a good run at the winner in the stretch, but she just could not beat her." The final margin, a short head. The next important stop on the Garden State tour will be the $15,000 added Cherry Hill Stakes on Wednesday, in which the favorite may be Ford and Kelty's Iron Rail. It will be a memory trail for trainer Stanley Reiser, who will be here from Kentucky to saddle the colt. The last time Reiser visited was in the autumn of 1956 as assistant to his father, Milton, who ran Clifford Lusky's Federal Hill in the rich The Garden State. Federal Hill led all the way in the "world's richest race," only to be beaten a heart-breaking nose by Calumet Farm's Barbizon. Jockey William Carstens thought Federal Hill had lasted. We remember father and son looking up to the press box in nervous anticipation while the photo-finish was being processed, and the expressions of disappointment when the numbers were flashed on the board. California: New Look at Blood Theories Needed? Cite Sire Career of Fleet Nasrullah Sets Record 28 Days after Stud Duty Oscar Otis California I ■ By Oscar Otis ' New Look at Blood Theories Needed? Cite Sire Career of Fleet Nasrullah Sets Record 28 Days After Stud Duty HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 16.— Two seemingly unrelated news items of recent vintage strongly hint that some long-standing theories of breeding may have to undergo re-evaluation. Item number one was the authoritative victory of Venetian Way in the Kentucky Derby. Item number two was the score in the Hollywood Premiere here opening day of Fleet Nasrullah, who was easing through the final sixteenth and managed, even so, to set a new track record of l:tt% with his first 5 furlongs an astounding :55%. The connection is this: Venetian Way's sire, Royal Coinage, was put to stud on the basis of his two-year-old form, injuries having forced his retirement after the Belmont Futurity. Fleet Nasrullah made his searing run, a race impressive enough to make him, at this point, early favorite for the $100,000 added Californian late this motnh, exactly 28 days after finishing a cover ias a stud during a season which, between Santa Anita and Hollywood, saw him cover a dozen mares. The conclusion: It is possible that the time-honored theory of a sire "must be proved" in the classics is not as valid as it was, say 30 years ago. People today are taking chances on young horses of promise, such as Turn-to, and of later date, Warfare, who may or may not return to racing, but who in any event had no trouble in getting himself syndicated. As for "sires in training," there are four horses on the roster of nine of the "A" list here at Hollywood Park, the four being the mentioned Fleet Nasrullah, Ole Fols, Seaneen and Linmold. Finnegan Favors Spring Mating Ellwood "Pie Prince" Johnston, owner of Fleet Nasrullah, and William B. Finnegan, trainer of Ole Fols and Seaneen", agree that the practice of short spring stud careers for horses of promise is a valid one. Says Finnegan : "If you have faith in your horse, I see nothing against the practice, and, in addition, if your horse needs a refresher from the race track anyway, the coincidence of rest and stud duty gets a sire off to a flying start, so to speak, and well ahead of his normal schedule. In fact, the notion could get popular, and if so, it would be nothing more or less than a return to the old days in the West when the practice was fairly common. "At old Tijuana (predecessor of Caliente), it was quite common for matings to be arranged at the barn and I remember one case where a horse was bred at the farm and won three days later in top stake company. In my own experience, I have never known a tour of duty at stud to change a horse in any way for the worse, except in a few cases where a horse was mean-dispositioned before he was used in the stud. A mean horse can sometimes come back to the races just a bit meaner. In my own case, I recall Tick On, who served three springs at stud and raced the rest of every year, and, if he is taken as an example, the practice is hard to fault." Ellwood Johnston reasons it this way: "As long as you don't actually interfere with nature, the light use as a stud of a horse in training does not seem to hurt in any way. The Pie King, for example^ made a successful comeback here in California after a full season at stud. As for Fleet Nasrullah, he was given his first mare shortly after running second in the Santa Anita Handicap. I breed only my own mares and figure the return at $60,000. True, this is a bookkeeping, for Fleet Nasrullah 's stud fee will be $5,000 when he goes on the market for keeps, but giving him 12 mares subtracted from the books of my other stallions, and these services thus made available were all sold. As for the distaff racing while carrying a foal, mares in' foal in the wilds run about pretty much as usual until near foaling time and if you want proof, I'll cite you Iron Maiden. When she won the big handicap at Del Mar, she was six months in foal. As you recall, I sold her to Calumet Farm, and she produced Trentonian and Iron Liege, a Kentucky Derby winner." Hardboots Now Accept Cal-Bred On closer scrutiny, it would appear that many American breeders will take a chance on sending a mare to form shown on a horse at two, or maybe early three, and by early three we mean stakes prior to the Kentucky Derby. And the practice of standing horses still in training, while not actually recommended, is having an apparent resurgence of popularity. Well, at least here in the West, when this tourist was in Kentucky not so many days back, it came as a surprise to learn two startling facts. The first was that the California horse now has earned the respect of even the hardest of hardboots. The second is that a half dozen major production units in the Greater Lexington area are beginning to give serious consideration to the notion of either relocating here or establishing brarlch operations. There is what might be considered a lesson here. Any time a breeding set-up has it too easy, such as in South Africa, where it is a closed corporation and racing imports barred (hence no yardstick of comparison), the breed definitely deteriorates. The other inescapable conclusion is that success in breeding can be attained through other than reliance on classic winner lines, for California made it the hard way. O'Reilly: Public Likes 'Corn' with Rich Stakes Its' Mint Juleps, Rye and Pink Champagne Preakness Has Extra-Curricular Activities Tom O'Reilly I O'Reilly I By Tom O'Reilly Public Likes 'Corn' With Rich Stakes It's Mint Juleps, Rye and Pink Champagne . Preakness Has Extra-Curricular Activities PIMLICO, Baltimore, Md., May 16. — The ancient and honorable $150,000 added Preakness Stakes, described in recent years as "The middle jewel in Amer ica's Triple Crown," which also includes the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, will be contested for the 84th time at this historic track next Saturday. Lou Pond-field's plans for its approach make us aware, again, of the revolutionary changes that have taken place in the methods of presenting classic races in this country. The planned hoop-la now surrounding America's richer racing classics are as revolutionary as the gesture of the conservative, old Manhattan Bank that welcomed Christmas, last year, with live, short-skirted ladies pirouretting on ice skates in its windows. Just as Madison Avenue's advertising agencies have encouraged stiff-collared bankers to hit their customers with a Broadway show biz pitch, so the success of the late Col. Matt, Winn's Louisville production which, years ago, less flamboyant easterners unsuccessfully tried to dismiss as "a mere circus," has changed the face of classic races all over the United States. The modern slogan seems to be "Spike your big race with corn — the public loves it!" Derbytown Exploitation Started It All Undoubtedly, Winn's money-making exploitation of the native julep and Stephen Foster's nostalgic air, "My Old Kentucky Home," influenced the Preakness promoters, long ago, to stress Free State rye and "Maryland, My Maryland," a Yankee version of an old German Christmas tune originally called, "O Tannen-baum." Then came Hialeah's pink champagne. Flamingos shepherded by Seminoles; the Florida Derby's miniature steamboat and water-skiing on an infield lake and now, we were told, Gene Mori plans a complete blank cartridge Civil War battle to amuse Garden State's customers on Memorial Day. All these innocent efforts at pageantry in a nation that elects, rather than inherits, its rulers, inspired a very funny, if snobbish, observation by George F. T. Ryall in the New Yorker magazine last year. After enthusiastically describing the brave pennants of the mounted lancers, when royalty itself showed up for the running of the Queen's Plate in Canada, Ryall wrote, loftily, "There were no drum majorettes." The inference was, of course, that this was the real thing. Well, I'm not so sure. In the three wars of my time any nut who showed up with a mere lance, on a horse, would have been equipped to fight nobody but Monaco or the Vatican. So what was real about them? Mori's exploding blanks will be every bit as authentic. Of course, if this trend toward pre-race high-jinks continues, it may be necssary to send the drama critics around to report whether or not the track is staging a good show. I seem to remember a little girl named Sonja Henie putting on an ice skating act, between periods, at the Madison Square Garden hockey games fears ago. Eventually, this mere time-killer grew to such proportions that La Henie, a former Olympic ice-skater, became the richest athlete of all time. Her skating earned far more money than Babe Ruth's baseball, Jack Dempsey's fights or Ben Hogan's golf. It took a pari-mutuel revolution that spawned $100,000 races and the inspired talents of Arcaro to equal her individual earning power. But then women always did have an eye for money and Sonja's productions have long since been matters for the drama desk rather than the sports department. Black-Eyed Susans and Rye Colonel Winn's original concern with roses, juleps and music were designed to give the public something to talk about besides the horse race. With inspired and widely acclaimed syndicated writers like Grantland Rice and Bill Corum, among others, adding references to Blue Grass and Kentucky's famed ham-a'nd-chicken brakfasts to the picture, the public soon decided that this was an event it must see. The Preakness long ago followed suit by featuring the winner's blanket of black-eyed susans, Maryland rye and the state song. It was only in recent years, with the arrival of flamingos, boats and now a complete Civil War battle, that Pimlico felt obliged to recognize the trend and add more. Here, at least, the Marylanders have not forgotten the original stars of their production — the horses. Early Preakness arrivals are entertained by a "Powder Puff Derby," featuring lady riders no betting) and exhibitions of jumping horses given by talented youngsters of the nearby horse havens. All of this raises a tricky question. How many people go to a race track to see a flamingo, a miniature steamboat, a simulated Civil War battle or a horse show? For that matter, how many go to the Queen's Plate to see the Governor General of Canada ride in a coach-and-four? Last year's Canadian show was an exception, of course. We know Canadians would go to see the Queen if her train was merely changing engines at a water tank — did in fact. But do they attend the program at Woodbine, dnnually, merely because of the Continued on Page Forty-Nine lO'REILLY ON RACING I By TOM O'REILLY Continued from Page Four ceremonies accompanying that ancient race? Evidently they do. So, on with the dance. It should be pointed out here, however, that in addition to giving people something to talk about, these extracurricular activities accompanying our richer races are also included to induce the public to believe it will have a day of fun attending the great affair in question. This implies, of course, that the town surrounding the event will offer visitors from afar every possible enjoyment. Here, it would seem, the Preakness enjoys certain advantages. All knowing people admit that Baltimore is one of the most colorful cities in the United States. Despite its proximity to the Capital city of Washington, it loses none of its traditional life and charm. Residents of a great seaport as well as a manufacturing center, Baltimoreans, whose suburbs, crab cakes and terrapin are surpassed by no others, are correctly described as "amiable." They take their ancient race and the many visitors it attracts right in stride. Probably the most obvious evidence of Baltimore's attraction for many people is the simple fact that the most civilized of modern American poets — Ogden Nash — lives here. And before him there was H. L. Mencken. You can visit Tho-reau's Walden Pond, if you like. I'll dash with Nash to Pimlico. George L. Ohrstrom, Jr.'s Doural turned back C. Mahlon Kline's Gridiron to win the 39th running of the National Hunt Cup here last Saturday. The two-mile steeplechase handicap highlighted the Radnor Hunt Club's annual spring meeting which operates for the benefit of the Chester County Hospital. In negotiating the about 2 miles and 14 brush jumps in 3:482/5 over firm turf, the 8-year-old gelding by Admiral Drake registered a popular victory with the gathering of some 5,000. Currently in California, owner Ohrstrom was represented by his trainer, W. Burling Cocks, who accepted the permanent challenge trophy from Mrs. J. Hutchinson Scott. Explanation of Optional Claiming Races Explanation of Optional Claiming Races An OPTIONAL CLAIMING race is one restricted to horses running or having previously run for a stated claiming price, and the term OPTIONAL CLAIMING means just what the name implies, the owner having the option of entering his horse for a price (eligible to be claimed) or not entering his horse for a price (not eligible to be claimed). If an owner does not want to enter his horse to be claimed, his horse must meet the "optional conditions" set down by the racing secretary in order to be eligible to compete. These conditions appear in the past performances preceding each race. All horses who race in optional claimers, but are not entered to be claimed, must have raced at some time for a specified claiming price to obtain a classification, and they must again race for a claiming price if the owner wishes to reclassify his horse in a lower category. Also, winners of optional claiming races when entered NOT eligible to be claimed, can not be eligible for the same class of race UNLESS entered eligible to be claimed.
