Md., May 14.— Following an auto trip from Garden State Park Friday night to participate in a hearing here before Pimlico's board of stewards, • jockey William Hartack was fined $200 "for j giving conflicting calls on his services for i Saturday, May 14*' and was permitted to •' fulfill his commitments at the New Jersey ! track today. , On Friday, the Pimlico stewards an- : nounced that Hartack was under immedi- i ate suspension and would be unable to ride : until he appeared for a hearing here on : Tuesday at 11 a. m. to straighten out a | conflict of calls involving Hugh A. Grant's » Airmans Guide, entered in the Black-Eyed ' Susan at Pimlico today, and the Keystone ; Stable's Our Jody, entered in the Betsy i Ross Stakes at Garden State this afternoon. A series of phone calls between Garden State and Pimlico late Friday afternoon i produced the revised arrangements, and i Hartack arrived at the track last night at i 9:15 p. m. by auto, accompanied by his agent, Howard "Scratch" Pestano; his i lawyer. Angelo D. Malandra of Camden, N. J.; Our Jody's trainer, George Zateslo; Nick Jemas, middle Atlantic representative of the Jockeys' Guild, and Vic Sovinski, trainer of the Kentucky Derby winner, Venetian Way. Trainer Williams in Group Awaiting this group at the track were Bert Williams, trainer of Airmans Guide; stewards Joseph F. Flanagan, Fred Colwill and Wilmer Brinton: Pimlico's assistant director of racing, Chick Lang (Hartack's former agent); and a covey of newspapermen, who were not permitted in the closed ; ; hearing. "There was confusion on both sides," Flanagan explained to the press following the stewards decision. "On the boy's side, he had the impression that Airmans Guide would run in the Acorn at Aqueduct following the Kentucky Oaks ; that the Black-Eyed Susan was too close to the Kentucky Oaks for her, and that she would not run in that event. He made arrangements to ride Our Jody several weeks ago on this date. "On the trainer's side, he had the impression that he had Hartack's services for Airmans Guide, although there was nothing formal between them and no contact was j established. Both sides made attempts to reach the other and failed to do so. "Hartack has a new agent, and in the last few weeks he has made many of his own engagements. There are so many errors in this situation that its hard to fix the blame for the confusion. Therefore, we are restoring Hartack to good standing immediately, but fining him $200 for negligence in making his engagements so that his calls conflicted." Hartack and his party returned to Garden State Park immediately following the 45-minute hearing, which ended at 10 p. m. Y., May 14.— Frank E. "Jimmy" Kilroe. director of racing and racing secretary of the New York Racing Association, today announced that he had resigned these posts to take on a full-time executive post at Santa Anita. Kilroe, who is 48, has been racing secretary-handicap-per for the New York tracks for the past six years, succeeding the late John B. Campbell, whom he had served as assistant for many years. He was made director of racing at the NYRA, succeeding his father-in-law, Marshall Cassidy, this year, while Cassidy is now devoting his full time to The Jockey Club. Jimmy Kilroe will remain with the NYRA until the close of the current season on November 30. Kilroe said that he is making this move to the West Coast primarily for family reasons, his wife having been in ill health for some time and found that the California climate was beneficial to her last winter. "We have decided to make the move on doctor's advice at the close of the season and become natives of California," Kilroe said. He presently makes his home at Locust Valley, L. I. "It is always reluctantly that one leaves home, but this does provide an opportunity to express my gratitude to the trustees and officials of the NYRA and the stewards of The Jockey Club for the confidence they have placed in me. particularly to the New York horsemen and turf writers for their unfailing support." Nature of New Post Not Disclosed Kilroe said that he felt the precise nature of his new post at Santa Anita should be announced by that association, adding. "Carleton Burke is now director of racing at Santa Anita and will probably continue in that post next year." Asked if he had any idea who would succeed him in his posts at the NYRA, Kilroe said. "I only know that at least six capable men have been under consideration." Kilroe added, "This is not exactly a new development. Four years ago the late Dr. Charles Strub approached me with a similar offer, but I felt that it was impossible to leave New York racing while it was in a state of flux. I can say that the proudest achievement of my life has been being as-| sociated in the rehabilitation of New York racing, which is now on the way back to its proper place at the top." John W. Hanes, chairman of the New York Racing Association, said: "Our loss will be Santa Anita's gain, for few people have made such a contribution to thoroughbred racing as Jimmy Kilroe. He is one of the great handicappers and racing authorities in this country, and has done to make New York racing what it is today — the best in the country. "When he leaves at the end of the season all of our good wishes go with him and his wife." Kilroe also said that he would continue his Experimental Free Handicap this year, actually next winter, and would go on making those Jockey Club ratings of the two-year-olds, "unless by father-in-law (Cassidy I fires me." FRANK E. 'JIMMY' KILROE— Will end his long association with the New York tracks at the end of the current season. CRUSE Stall Correspondent BEULAH PARK, Grove City, Ohio, May 14. — Jockey Harry Holcomb continues to shorten Paul A. Ward's lead in the riding colony and added another winner to his tally after guiding C. Roberts' Fibol to a driving victory in this afternoon's fourth race. Holcomb sent the six-year-old Final Touch stud around the leaders on the turn, came to the extreme outside of the race tra ckto be just a few feet from the outside rail for the stretch bid and at the wire was one-half length the best of Ward and Mr. and Mrs. Perry Bayley's Bobnjack. Time for the 6 furlongs over the racing strip officially classified as "heavy" was 1:17% and as the choice among the fans, a $2 ticket on Fibol, Holcomb's 25th winner i at the meeting, was worth $6.40. Gale Osborne, who is annually among the leading trainers during a session at this course, sent out his own Jamaica in the opener and under the able guidance of jockey Anthony Grogan, the six-year-old Mount Marcy gelding negotiated a mile and 70 yards in 1:54 flat. It was the first victory of the year for the thoroughbred and the seventh that Osborne saddled at the meeting. The favorite in the betting, Jamaica returned a $8.60 win mutuel. Jockey Guillermo Silva. the fourth leading riding reinsman at the meeting to Ward. Holcomb and Grogan respectively, turned in his 17th winner while astride C. A. and C. J. Werline's, Freedom Guard to complete the $66.00, 5-3 Daily Double. It was the Four Freedoms mare's third outing this year and her first visit to the winner's circle. Mildly regarded in the betting, she returned $10.40 straight. Stewards' Rulings Stewards' Rulings SPORTSMAN'S PARK, Cicero, III.. Camden. N. J., May 14. — Joseph M. Roebling's Be Cautious, an English-bred filly with only one previous start in this country, displayed an admirable combination of speed and courage here this afternoon to capture the ninth running of the 6 furlongs Betsy Ross Stakes by a head over Wheatley Stable's highweighted and favored Irish Jay. The latter gave a glorious effort in defeat to overcome precariously close quarters along the inside making her rally on the stretch turn and she was gaining on the imported gray filly with every stride. P. Hunter Faul-coner's Aunt Rosita held on nicely to save third honors* a distance of four lengths from the top pair, with Leonard P. Sasso's Staretta finishing another head out of the money. John Choquette alertly rode the winning daughter of Grey Sovereign — Ibex, by Chamossaire over a fast course in 1: Ills-She carried 114 pounds against 121 on Irish Jay. The latter was installed a heavy choice in the field of 13 three-year-old fillies at 7 to 5 and the winning Be Cautious re- turned $19.80. The weather was cloudy and on the chilly side but 38.169 fans were in the stands. The winner is an attractive feminine dark gray, purchased by her owner for a i I ! i sum reported to have been in the neighborhood of $50,000. She won three of her five starts in England as a juvenile and finished fourth against good company in her American debut at Aqueduct last week. The Betsy Ross had a value of $30,650 for its renewal today and Be Gracious received a net of $19,597.50 as the winner. Roebling was present for the occasion and he received the Betsy Ross trophy from Mrs. William T. Cahill, the wife of the New Jersey congressman from the 1st district. Jockey Choquette. who rode Be Cautious, commented after the race that he was "lucky with such a large field to be out of trouble at all times. She ran just the way I wanted her to and did what I asked. She is a free running filly and certainly looks like a good one to me." Henry Moreno, upon dismounting from Irish Jay, said that he could offer no excuses for the beaten favorite. "I was able to save ground by the rail all the way." he said, "and had a good run at the winner in the stretch but she just could not beat her." i New Garden D. D. Record 1 New Garden D. D. Record GARDEN STATE PARK, N. J., May 14. — A record Daily Double pool of $424,639 for Garden State Park was established this afternoon by an enthusiastic crowd of 38,169. The new record came unexpectedly as the attendance was 5,480 less than on Memorial Day of 1958 when the previous record was set at $407,508. The latter stood as a world's record for this form of wagering until the day of the Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park last summer when $439,472 was invested in the Daily Double pool. The winning combination today consisted of Bernard Germanio's Mrs. Cooper and Sandra H Stable's Croyden Chimes and it returned $176.20. / , . Y., May 14. — Fillies occupy the spotlight next week, with juveniles meeting in the $15,000 Fashion Stakes on Wednesday at five furlongs on and three-year-olds meeting in the $50,000 Acorn Stakes at one mile on Saturday. The Acorn is patterned after the English 1,000 Guineas and until this year was run at Belmont Park since its inaugural in 1931, when the late Col. E. R. Bradley's Baba Kenny was the winner. C. V. Whitney's Top Flight, one of the immortals of her sex, won the first renewal. Since then, the Acorn has gone to such fine fillies, many of whom proved fine producers after their racing career was completed, as Fleam, Good Gamble, Dawn Play, Damaged Goods, Twilight Tear, Gallorette, But Why Not, Nell K., Siama, Nothirdchance, High Voltage, Bayou, Big Effort and last year, Quill. In 1951, the Acorn was run in two divisions, the first going to Siama, dam of Bald Eagle and One-Eyed King, and the second to Nothirdchance, dam of last Wednesday's Youthful Stakes winner, Hail to Reason. There were also two dead heats in the Acorn, the most remarkable being that of 1956 when the camera was unable to separate Beyond and Princess Turia, who both carry Mrs. Gene Markey's Calumet Farm silks. This year's Acorn is the first of a series of three races called the "Oak series" and is followed by the $25,000 Mother Goose at nine furlongs at Belmont Park on June 8, and the $75,000 Coaching Club American Oaks at a mile and one-quarter at the same track on June 25. A single nomination on April 1 made 81 fillies eligible to all three stakes, but separate nominations could be made to the Acorn on May 2, the Mother Goose on May 16 and the CCA Oaks on June 1. The James Fitzsimmons-trained entry of Mrs. H. C. Phipps' Irish Jay and Ogden Phipps' Sarcastic, loom short-price favorites in the week-end mile. Carrying top-weight of 121 pounds, Irish Jay won the seven-furlong Comely Stakes by a neck over Mrs. B. S. Wright's Improve, who carried 115. Leonard P. Sasso's Staretta was a length and one-half back after setting the pace under 112, while Sarcastic came from far back and on the outside all the way to be a half length out of the money. These fillies are all eligible to the Acorn, but will have to carry equal weight of 121 pounds. My Dear Girl Not Likely to Race Other Acorn possibilities include J. M. Roebling's English filly, Be Cautious, who was impressive when running against colts for her only start here. She is slated to start in the six-furlong Betsy Ross at Garden State today, but could run right back in the Acorn. Capt. Harry F. Guggenheim's Make Sail, winner of the Kentucky Oaks, is a probable Acorn starter. Mrs. Frances A. Genter's My Dear Girl, 1959 champion, is eligible, but seemed hardly likely to be ready for a mile next Saturday when she tired after three furlongs in her seasonal debut last Tuesday. Mrs. Howell E. Jackson won the 1,000 Guineas with Never Too Late and her husband has an eligible in its American counterpart with the recent winner, Funny Bone, but trainer E. Christmas feels she needs more seasoning. The probable favorite for Wednesday's Fashion is Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes Sailor's Vision, impressive winner of her last two starts at Hialeah and the Big A. However, the cough, which is decimating the local two-year-olds, makes any forecast of the probable field for this dash pure speculation. Ada L. Rice's Apatonthe-back qualified handsomely with a victory here on Thursday. Mis. Harry A. Love's Prima Rondi, a close third at odds-on in that dash, is also eligible to the Fashion, as is Mrs. Phipps' Eastern Princess, who showed nothing after a slow start and seemed a mite sore. That sister to Bold Ruler had won her only other start. Aly Khan's Sudden Death a Shock The tragic death of Prince Aly Khan on Thursday literally stunned this writer as he was a man of such boundless energy he seemed literally destined to "live forever." A man of many paradoxes, Prince Aly was widely known as the playboy of the past 25 years, yet as a Moslem he never touched hard liquor. His visiting card read elaborately "Colonel the Prince Aly Khan, Minister Plenipotentiary of Pakistan to the United Nations," while his Christmas card last year, a color reproduction of a painting of his filly champion Petite Etoile, carried simply the name Aly Khan and the address of one of his French studs. Though a man of great inherited wealth. Prince Aly visited my apartment one Sunday afternoon, hat-less and wearing a black suit and flowing black crepe tie, while carrying a briefcase so bulging with papers that he was unable to close it — giving the elevator operator the impression that he was a door-to-door salesman. An excellent amateur racerider, who took pride in being called "Alec McCann" in Ireland, he once told me that he met his living expenses by betting, largely on French maidens that he would ride himself in England. What will become of his huge thoroughbred holdings is anyone's guess, but at least one American is prepared to take the entire lot at $8,000,000. Ascot Park: Preference Rules for Ascot Speed Handicap Van Berg's Admiral Van Points for Sprint Apprentice Campbell Setting Torrid Pace Bob Hurley p^-— — — -. — £-— Ascot Park ' By Bob Hurley Preference Rules for Ascot Speed Handicap Van Berg's Admiral Van Points for Sprint Apprentice Campbell Setting Torrid Pace ASCOT PARK, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, May 14 — One of the amazing things about the stakes races at this meeting is their range. No sooner has the 2-mile Gold Cup gone into the record books but this association is putting up $7,500 in added money for the Ascot Speed Handicap which will be run at the Ascot course distance of 33 feet less than 4J/2 furlongs. Once again the management has drawn preference rules that almost preclude anyone shipping for the race as the field is limited to 10 starters and winners of allowance and handicap races at this distance abound due to the plague of muddy tracks. Marion Van Berg, aided and abetted by his sidekick, Frank Fitzgerald, has taken dead aim on the Speed Handicap this year with the lat-ter's Admiral Van who won the Carlozzi Handicap here on Wednesday in his first start of the season. The Ace Admiral — Jeannie Van homebred looked mighty good in winning his seasonal debut by two lengths in :54% over a muddy strip. Fitzgerald picked up the Nebraska-bred about a month ago upon his arrival from Florida and assisted by R. C. "Hog" Fisher got the gelding ready for the Ascot campaign. Admiral Van, recently named one of the outstanding Nebraska-breds in the handicap division, had spent the winter at his owner's Columbus acreage, and was nearly fit when the Ascot campaign started. Expect Pine Echo to Challenge "Fitz" merely breezed his charge four or five times and stepped him 5 furlongs from the gate in 1:04 last week and "The Admiral" was ready. Last season Admiral Van won a division of the Ak-Sar-Ben Inaugural, while earning $14,095 and will rejoin the Van Berg stable at Omaha after his engagement in the Speed Handicap here May 23. Luther Shelton's rejuvenated Pine Echo, Lillian Bayliff's Lucky Page, M. Mendelson's Dr. Eugene J., and H. J. Wise's Pan Lopez will undoubtedly face Admiral Van in this race with the field fully deserving of the $7,500 added purse money. Turns to the Left: Ronnie Campbell, who leads the riding list here with 44 winners, has a remarkable 30 per cent through last Wednesday. The young Michigan lad has ridden 197 winners since his first victory at this course last May. He picked up 122 winners in 1959, seven in Florida last winter, 24 at Oaklawn, where he led the list, and the 44 presently. Campbell has an appeal before the Florida commission for a two-week extension of his apprentice period due to an injury at Hialeah. Other riders with fine percentages here are Tommy Maeda and Frank Northcutt with 25 per cent of their mounts winners. Both Campbell and trainer Pete Maxwell can just about be crowned as the leaders of their separate trades with two weeks to go. Campbell's nearest rival, Frank Northcutt, got a five-day suspension and Maxwell's closest rival, Mike Shelton, shipped to the Wheeling area. It will mark the sixth time in seven seasons that Maxwell has headed the trainers' list at Ascot Park. . . . The Ascot Silver Cup Purse has been upped steadily until it will carry a $5,000 value this year. This shorter version of the Gold Cup bars the winner of the 2-mile race as it is raced at the 15-16 mile distance. Track Condition Greatly Improved In contrast to the early condition of the racing surface, the track has held a fine firm bottom through the steady rains of the past six days. Times at all distances have been average for the sloppy condition of the track. . . . Population rise in Cuyahoga County where Thistledown and Randall lie now totals 1.7 million persons. . . . Stables continue to file into both stable areas for the Thistledown opening, May 25. Latest to join Bobby Cramer was Boyd Littrell and Roy Gillem from Kentucky with Tommy Stevens slated to check in with 35 from Churchill next week. Stevens is returning to Thistledown after an invasion of Delaware last season, which means that there will probably be a premium of three-year-old racing. At an open house on Sunday, Edward J. DeBartolo previewed the renovated plant with split-level clubhouse, entirely new paddock facilities, black-topped parking lots and freshly painted interiors, drawing many favorable comments from the fans. . . . The trotting interests in Cleveland have shifted their entire 132-night schedule to Northfield, which is located just up the road from both Thistledown and Randall. Rumor persists that DeBartolo has made several offers to purchase the Randall property and bring about further consolidation of the thoroughbred racing dates in this area. . . . Clubhouse maitre d'hotel Johnny Link reports reservations very heavy for Gold Cup Day with people coming from Canton, Massillon, Youngs-town and Ravenna. It's their race, so to speak. . . . Some arrivals from Jefferson Downs in New Orleans are showing up in the past performance records. Pete Maxwell received Gold Security from that plant with Howard Munk and Irish Owens also receiving a few from the Bayou land. Frank Seremba's Circle Y Stable is planning an invasion of River Downs following this meeting but will be back on hand for the Scarborough opening on July 18. New Jersey: Meadowbrook Stables Name to Remember Partnership to Three Florida Businessmen Main Division Under Guidance of Mitchell William C. Phillips New Jersey By William C. Phillips Meadowbrook Stables Name to Remember Partnership of Three Florida Businessmen Main Division Under Guidance of Mitchell GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 14.— The Meadowbrook Stables is a relatively new name in this ancient sport of thoroughbred but, it tsx uiuiuu^iiuuu racing, lading, uui. as ao il tsx uiuiuu^iiuuu lading, uui. ao il says in the song, "With Just a Little Bit o' Bloomin' Luck," it may develop into one of the best-known names within short order. At least that is the determination of three Florida businessmen who became partners to form the Meadowbrook Stables and Farms, and from all indications, they are proceeding toward their goal with amazing rapidity. Already, the Meadowbrook Stables is racing on three fronts with a total of 47 a horses in training, and the Meadowbrook Farms, Inc., at Ocala, Fla., is one of the showplaces of that growing thoroughbred center. The main division of the racing stable is quartered here at Garden State Park with W. R. "Bill" Mitchell, a veteran beyond his years who first became known in New Jersey as trainer for the late John L. McKnight. Mitchell has been associated with the group since it was formed a little more than a year ago and, from what he says about the owners, they are little short of fabulous in their operations. • The partnership is composed of Joseph La Croix of Hollywood, Fla., Samuel Rizzo and Izzy Nasher, both of whom are of Miami, Fla. In March of 1959, they made the big decision when they pooled their resources to establish what they declared to Mitchell would be the most modern and best thoroughbred farm in Florida. They bought, a 173-acre farm in Ocala from William Lynch. Within the first six months, they added another 200 acres, and they presently have 373 acres of the finest pasture land in the area. "You should see the place," says Mitchell. "It is unbelievable, the improvements that have been made. They already had two 20-stall training barns on the original farm. Since then, they have built a 40-stall broodmare barn and now they are busy on the construction of the stud and breeding barns and paddocks. 'Strictly a Business Operation' "It is strictly a business operation," Mitchell continues, "and the farm is taking in boarders whose fees help with the expense of their expansion program. After all, there is a lot more room than they can use right now, and plenty of working help. Tommy Heard Jr. was one of the horsemen who broke yearlings there last winter and a couple of them won coming right off of the farm." Among the features mentioned by Mitchell is a three-quarter mile training track and a four-stall starting gate. The partners presently have 20 broodmares of their own, some private purchases and others from the Keeneland Sales last fall; 14 boarding mares for Mrs. Richard duPont, who races as the Bohemia Stable, and two others who belong to Dr. John W.Lee. The Meadowbrook Farms is only one of several new nurseries which have mushroomed in Florida from Ocala down to Key Largo, and it seems like there is another new one popping up almost every day. As in any operation, however, there are those which will be successful and those which will not. From the way Mitchell talks, though, there is little doubt but what this is one of those which will make the grade. The best horse Mitchell has in the racing string at present is Petare. The nine-year-old Argentine-bred son of Moslem — Collette, by Diadoque, which astounded American horsemen when he defeated the best of our handicap horses in Florida a couple of winters ago, is noted as the leading race and money-winner of all time in Venezuela, where he campaigned at the height of iiis career. Petare has a record of 43 victories in 66 starts and in the City of Miami Handicap at Tropical Park last winter, he shattered a mile and 70-yard track record under 120 pounds which had stood for 15 years. The veteran racer was injured when he ran into the hedge in the Bougainvillea Turf Handicap and he returned to Venezuela, where he came back to win this spring before being shipped to Mitchell here in this country. Plans are to race Petare this summer and place him in the stud at the farm for the 1961 breeding season. Promising Band of Juveniles "I don't know if the old boy will be as sharp as before," Mitchell commented about Petare, "but he has the class and he is coming along nicely. Our best bets right now, though, are some of our two-year-olds." Mitchell ran off a quick list. The first one he mentioned was Saint Valara, a Spy Song colt who is a half brother to Restless Wind. The latter was an outstanding juvenile of 1958, and according to Mitchell, this colt is every bit as fast. Winning Effort is a half brother to Julie Kate, a filly who is performing this afternoon in the Betsy Ross Stakes. A filly named Little Tumbler is by Royal Note — Fairy Dancer, by Blenheim. She won her first start at Hialeah this past winter by eight lengths and placed in the Dinner Stakes at Gulfstream Park. She is being pointed for the Ran-cocas Stakes here on May 25, along with a Turn-to filly named Destiny's Turn. Mitchell has 30 horses racing under the Meadowbrook banner here in New Jersey. Another 14 are with J. J. Toner in New York, while a smaller division has been sent to Tommy W. Kelly to campaign this summer in Chicago.
